Re:Make it less ugly
Forget that anti-skeuomorphism. It looks like shit.
It is step ass-backwords to Windows 1.0 as that picture shows.

Re:What the f*$# is wrong with us?
The best trolls are indistinguishable from serious comments.
No, not trolling. Sorry, but there IS a grain of truth in geek misogyny. This toon is a humorous example:
http://www.geeksaresexy.net/20...
Also, when was the last time that you saw a woman depicted in a video game that was less than a "C" cup? Sorry, but if you were to go back a few centuries and give a woman a sword and armor, I am pretty sure that the armor would cover more than about six square inches of her body. Sorry, but in video games, women are sex objects (Metroid is the one notable exception that I can think of). Even as protagonists, they will dress scantily, while standing next to a male character that is so covered in so much armor that you can only see his eyes.
Perhaps part of it is that women are, in general, under-represented in geek culture. Guys are attracted to girls, but there are damn few of them floating around in geek circles. So, they go from being "people" to becoming something closer to a "trophy."

Re:Mario Kart Wii 2
All I wanted was more Mario Kart Wii, not a giant controller with a screen on it.
Face it.
What you really wanted is this:

Re:Lego was not the ultimate do-it-yourself playth
I disagree, clearly you were not building big enough. (^_^)
Saturn VDifferent engineering challenges to be sure, but they are still valid.

Re:Makes no sense
Right. There is no benefit to you at all from living in a country with an educated population. None.
Based on these results I'm not sure we know, because it's obvious that we're not living in a country with a population as educated as they could be.
Throwing money at the schools will not magically make things better. Money thrown at good schools will make a difference, money thrown at bad schools won't. The biggest impact, as alluded to in a prior comment, is motivated parents and kids. There has been a shift over the recent years to one where it is now the teacher's sole responsibility as to whether a child learns or not. No longer is the child expected to put forth any effort - and, gracious, we all know the parents shouldn't have to be bothered.
This is not to belittle the efforts of teachers, they do have an impact. A good teacher can do wonders with a motivated/interested child but not much with a resistant child and parent. A bad teacher can crush the motivation of a child that will leave an impact for years. Teachers do matter but in most cases it is the parents that will ultimately determine whether a child learns or not. How much do the parents stress education and how involved are they in working with the child? What I would like to see is a study that correlates the parents attitudes and involvement match up to their child's scores and education.

Slightly more detail and WTH did he expect?
- Artist Gets Raided By Secret Service For Apple Store 'People Staring At Computers' Project
- Apple Store webcam “artist” raided by Secret Service
The potential penalty is absurd, but if you: Install software without permission on 100 machines at two stores that each take and upload a picture to your personal server every minute. Return every day, for several days, doing so since apple wipes the machines every day. Remotely trigger the software to show a slide show of your making (calling doing so "arranging an exhibition"), what the hell would you expect? No charges have been made yet, I hope he does not do jail time, but he deserves a smack upside the head.
Ideally Apple should lock down the DVD drives and USB ports at the stores, requiring an admin to mount a drive, though I have no clue how to do that.

So, Weekly World News was right!
Sure, everyone laughed the first time around. Not so funny now, eh?

Re:back to old style camera sizes?
View cameras are hugely expensive, and transporting them and setting them up is as well.
I am not talking about a view camera here. This is a TS lens used on a DSLR. Cost is $1000-$2000. Portability and convenience is exemplary.
In addition you can use it to record video as well:

Yes this actually going to be their main cash cow. Who else is going to protect us from the internet terrorists that are trolling around Slashdot. http://www.geeksaresexy.net/2008/05/12/hackers-can-turn-your-home-computer-into-a-bomb/

Re:huh
While this is a funny and lighthearted question on Slashdot, this is a real question for certain demographics:

Actually this was part of the deal with Google. Google said: "We'll fuck up iGoogle, if you fuck up Yahoo! Profiles. Just wait a few days to make it look like a co-incidence!"
It's all part of the Zion Catholic 9/11 7/July Conspiracy by the Royal Family to take over the world, in order to secure a monopoly on Cheese production. WaKE UP SHEEPLE!!!111!one

Faith in people
I recently had to start a Wiki for 1st year undergraduate students. I found it really hard to make it writable by everybody, since I was sure that it would result in a lot of vandalism. However, if you think about Wikipedia, the vast majority of pages can be edited by anyone and yet you almost never see malicious edits by people just dicking about. In the limit, people who visit Wikipedia prefer order. That's actually quite a comforting idea.
Obviously the more subtle stuff is harder to protect against.
