Re:Okay...
It's more like gmail keeps track...If you go to http://gmail.com/ it will redirect you to https to log in, and then back to http for your mail. However, if you go to https://gmail.com/ then you will stay in https the whole time. This is exactly the way it's supposed to work, where your status is maintained, though it can be argued that they should default you to https for security.
If you use the "Gmail notifier" plug in for Firefox, it defaults to https. There is also a "gmail customizer" app that will let you specify HTTPS as the default, but I've never used it. -
Re:Encryption
Or you can go to https://mail.google.com/mail to sign in (not https://gmail.com/ the certificate is for mail.google.com and you'll get warnings). I just set the bookmark I use to that and have an easy life.
-
Re:Encryption
I find it funny that a multi-billion dollar company like Google doesn't have a wild card or multiple ssl certs for gmail. https://gmail.com/ redirects to mail.gmail.com but gmail.com uses mail.gmail.com's certificate. So you get a possible man in the middle warning if you go to https://gmail.com./

Re:Encryption
Connecting to http://www.gmail.com/ automatically redirects me to the https: screen. Maybe it's your browser that has an SSL problem?

Thanks for all the tips!
This is the reason I submitted this to Slashdot - the community never fails to thoroughly answer a question that is asked of it! Thanks for all the advice and tips, and even the couple of job offers that were posted! I'm currently located in south Georgia (Valdosta, GA) and looking for something in the Atlanta, GA area (preferably north metro area), so if anyone has something to offer in that area, email me at ultimatemonty[at]gmail[dot]com
What I got out of all this is either start out with a small company where I can use my full skillset, or specialize and look at larger companies. I think I prefer small companies. Working at a mid-size university (12,000 students, ~5,000 employees) the past 7 years has taught me that I definitely can't stand dealing with the politics and bureaucratic BS of mid-size and larger firms. Unfortunately, I also know that I'll have to deal with it to some degree no matter where I end up, but a smaller shop seems more manageable and generally seems to be more relaxed, which I love. My current boss doesn't care what time I show up to work or what I wear, as long as what needs to get done, gets done. I doubt I find something even remotely close to this out in corporate America, but I can always hope =)
Thanks again for all the feedback!

Now that's not very nice of you, mentioning techgeek@gmail.com 's email address. Why, if i was techgeek@gmail.com i would be very upset now. Imagine all the email harvesting bots that'll pick up techgeek@gmail.com as a valid email address? Poor techgeek@gmail.com and his inbox. Well, i won't participate in that, techgeek@gmail.com !! Rest assured that i will never give away techgeek@gmail.com on any website and i will say to anyone using or posting techgeek@gmail.com that they should stop it, because techgeek@gmail.com is getting enough spam as it is!

Re:Legitimate Case?
fordiman@gmail.com and fordiman@googlemail.com
Try both; supposedly either one will reach your account. And both sites gmail.com and googlemail.com should reach your account to login. So I assume that your "@gmail.com" will be fine.
Plus it only applies to gmail.de unless Google feels like that's enough to redefine the whole GMail trademark globally. Either way, if you're concerned, start referring people to your email @googlemail.com.
Oh yeah, you'll probably want to set a filter for those "mailto"s... -
Re:sort of makes me wish
Let me help you with that typo: techgeek@gmail.com. A very nice address it is, and I'd be happy to bid $0.75 if it is spam free.

Re:is this the license that bans DRM?
See, what you view as "the real world" will soon become "the corporation-dominated world". But we'll live in whatever's left of the free world.
Do you use spydermann.slashdot@gmail.com to bemoan the "corporation-dominated world" to all of your friends?
The G in Gmail doesn't stand for GNU, by the way. -
Re:Anonymous Coward Claims Hilf is Braindead
Oh noes! A troll posted my email address unscrambled! OMG, OMG, OMG! Not like I've never done that before. Oh, look! I can even link to it too!
You, my good friend, are just one in a long line of trolls who've pestered me. Here's a hint, though: Don't enemy me just before you decide to go on a trolling spree. It kind of gives away who you are. -
Immigrating to Norway
Short answer: No.
Norway hasn't accepted immigrants since early in the 70ies.
However, there is a quota of 5000 specialists per year. I'd guess most of the Slashdot readership would fall under this category, and the Norwegian IT market is in desperate need of more people (the hiring bonuses for IT people are getting ridiculous). This quota has to date never been filled. Apx. 1000 people come to Norway per year under it.
Google is among the companies looking for more employees in their norwegian department, and Trondheim is a rather nice city :-)
Norway has been ranked as the world's best place to live by the UN's Human Development report for the last 6 years running.
Pretty much every Norwegian you'll ever meet will speak English, as it's taught in school from the 4th to 11th grade and most of our TV shows are imported from the US and UK.
If you start working in Norway, you'll have at least 5 weeks paid vacation/year - it's the law. This is in addition to the 12 official holidays.
If you get ill, you have 100% coverage (full pay) from day 1 until day 365 of your illness, after that other rules apply and you may have to tighten your belt a little.
Other than that? Well. Our natural scenery will take your breath away, our taxes and prices will drive you a little bit crazy, and our beautiful girls will make sure you never want to leave again :-)
Want to work here? Send me your CV and I'll see what I can do. -

Re:But Webmail is catching up1. There is no elegant offline viewing of email. When "on the go" I don't have access to an internet connection half the time so I can't read my gmail. (I don't want the overhead of the entire Google Desktop and that is a hack anyway). Plus, Gmail has been unavailable to me 3 times already this week (Error: please try back later). I've never seen Gmail unavailable, except when Google actually went down due to DNS issues between me and them.
However, with GMail mobile running on my cell phone (Java app for mobiles, browse to http://gmail.com/app ), I'm never without access to quick and easy email.
The backup issue is a potential problem. But you can fire up a POP client and download all your messages locally if you want, so where's the fire there?
The short of it is that since I've started using GMail, I've not needed an email client on my own machine. It's too convenient to have it in the browser instead of having to have extra software. And frankly, gmail's functionality beats hell out of any client I've ever used. The Gmail threading mechanism is cool, but it makes printing a single email a pain in the buttocks. Huh? Pick the email you want to print, click the right upper corner down down menu on that email, select print. It opens that email in a new window and calls the print function of your browser. Done. One email, printed. -

Re:Document.Write() not interpreted by Google
Since I modified the mailto: with some tricky/sliced javascript Document.Write() I don't have a single SPAM coming from a semi-hidden address, which is still looking -- for the regular human visitors -- like the classic "Contact us" Email link.
Let me get this straight. You don't get ANY spam at the address lddb.admin@gmail.com. Man, that's wild! I figured that the address lddb.admin@gmail.com would have tons of spam! -

Re:It's right there on the page you linked
We don't seem to have the same rendering of http://www.gmail.com/ cause there ain't no link titled "Sign up for Gmail" on mine. And the link you provided requires you to have a mobile phone. Why the hell do you need me to have a mobile phone for webmail?
And the link you provided does have a Signup link, which goes to the mobile phone required page. Do you have a google cookie indicating you already have an account, perhaps? We all know the 80/20 rule. The first 80% of a software project takes 20% of the time, and it's the extra 20% of the project that requires 80% of the time and effort, but it's also that last 20% that makes it a complete and useful software. Just look at how many software projects (at sourceforge or anywhere else) that have been abandoned halfway because the developer only wanted to have fun coding the first 80% and not serious enough to do the last 20%. Nobody at Google seems to want to do that last 20% either, and that is pretty scary for a billion dollars company that we are supposed to take seriously.
I'm sure the owners care, they're losing money hand over fist after all right? What, they told the SEC they made $730 million in profit last quarter I guess they're all going to jail then. -
Re:It's right there on the page you linked
On the lower right hand side of that page is a link titled Sign up for Gmail. I'd bet -- and this is just a wild guess -- that you'd use that to subscribe to the service.

Yep, see above, mobile phone requirement. Google already serves me enough ads as it is, I don't want them spamming my SMS.
I, too, share your fear and hatred of "some piece of beta software", no matter how well it works.
Google is a master in search, but they seem lousy in many other fields. I like Google as much as the next guy, but releasing a whole bunch of software or services, and leaving them perpetually in beta, just shows how much they really care about making quality software. They don't even consider taking the time to thoroughly test their software to call them anything other than beta.
Seriously, when shall I expect to see the final version of Gmail, Google Blog Search, Google SMS, Google Calendar, Google Catalogs and Google Video? What is the planned release date?

Re:email keyword
Probably because Yahoo! mail has been out a LOT longer than GMail.
Or maybe because Yahoo! mail is a real official service offered by Yahoo!, while Gmail is just some piece of beta software that you can't subscribe to anyway. Where's the "Create a new account" button on http://www.gmail.com/ ?
-
onur aciicmez at gmail com
is that the same as onur.aciicmez@gmail.com ?

Javascript is NOT easier for your customers.
You must be one of those retarded businesses who have flash on their front page. Javascript isn't easier, retard, it is one more thing that the person has to enable.
I would much rather a business use bob at place dot com than have, "In order to see our contact address, you must turn on javascript," or worse, and more probable, because people like you are stupid, "Contact:" and then nothing else. No explanation as to why you don't want me see your contact address.
Most of the suggestions above are a hundred times more accessible than javascript. Ironically, the one you quoted as inaccessible, and a "waste of your time", reply to joe at gmail dot com, is the most accessible, short of mailto:joe@gmail.com. joe at gmail dot com is text only. Does not require images, or javascript. The next accessible is those that require css or tables. The next is those that require images. 95% of people have images enabled. The least accessible is those that require javascript, flash, and those types of solutions.
Sorry for calling you retarded. It is a problem of timing. Your doublespeak is the straw that broke my calm demeanor.
A lot of these suggestions are fine for personal sites; but if you're actually in business they aren't practical. We use Javascript. You don't want to make life more difficult for the person trying to correspond
-
Re:javascript
I think that is just about fool-proof. Odds are that you'll never get spam sent to shadowarts@nonlogic.org or feesh@nonlogic.org or zashi@nonlogic.org. You might get some at RodgerTheGreat@gmail.com however.

Longer URL
So, in order to use this TLD, which is designed for mobile devices with generally akward methods of input...you have to type a longer URL than normal. If this is supposed to be useful why not: "website.m". Google has it right with http://m.gmail.com/

I have a solutionDon't use your isp's email. They can lock you in.
Use a email service like Gmail or Yahoo Mail.
-
Re:I hate GMAIL
You could just turn on POP forwarding and use your favorite email client. Or if you want a really minimal view, use http://m.gmail.com/. I agree with the above, though, keep your inbox empty and use search. That's how Gmail was designed to be used.

Re:From IRC, the reason:Mika, the guy in question is Matthew C. Kavanagh.
He has one accepted
/. submission which states his e-mail address as mailto:mkavanagh@gmail.com (user profile says 'email not shown publicly'). That address also returns a hit for user Pit on area51.phpbb.com, which has Matthew C./Matt Kavanagh several times in the source in its CVS repository. A guy by the same name posts in the php-dev mailing list under mailto:matthew@teh.ath.cx. This address can again be linked to Pit which states:## MOD Author: Pit < matthew@teh.ath.cx > (Matt Kavanagh) n/a
I hate to post this, but I don't see why Matthew would deserve the anonimity he denied Jani.
