This is off-topic, but I couldn't find a way to contact you privately.

Could you please go into more detail about your RAID-6 setup? I'm planning something similar, and would really appreciate some real-world experience with it, pitfalls to avoid etc.

Specifically, I'm interested in:

- which controller card and OS do you use?
- what type of hard drives, and do you use the same model/manufacturer, or are they mixed, to lessen probability of all of them belonging to a single bad batch?
- do you use hardware or software RAID?
- what filesystem you have formatted on the array?
- what kind of power supplies do you use, and in particular how do you deal with huge spin-up current draw when the array is booted, or when multiple drives wake up from power-save mode?
- did you encounter any issues with hard drive power-save in a RAID array?
- how about cooling and noise, any tips there?
- any other advice you might have

If you have a webpage up somewhere with an overview of your setup, that would be great.

Okay, this is way offtopic but given the grief WebDAV has given me recently, I thought I'd vent a little ...

If you want decent out-of-the-box WebDAV support you can indeed use Konquerer-- or Windows Explorer (gasp) which has supported this since 1998. Just don't use Gnome. I use GMX's free WebDAV service (https://mediacenter.gmx.net/ ) on my XP and Ubuntu boxes and you know what? Nautilus barfs every single time connecting to it -- Konquerer and Explorer are the only things that work reliably. (Yeah, I had to install kdebase on Ubuntu just so I could use WebDAV. Oh the suckage.)

(And oh, on the same system Evolution hard-crashes every time I connect to my IMAP server at work (Domino). Thank God for Thunderbird, which works. If there are any Gnome devs reading this -- please, please do some compatibility testing before you release your software into the world.)

A few weeks ago, I read an interesting article about Schlund&Partner, one of the largest internet-related companies in Germany these days, developing an eMail-solution of their own, because they weren't able to find anything suiting their demands. They're the guys behind GMX, the arguably most popular eMail service in Central Europe. Their eMailing system, Nemesis, is designed to provide scalability and redundancy all the way, maybe you can get them to relicense it to your company (I don't know which license the project actually is under, sorry), or at least let you evalute their solution so you can deceide what you can actually expect from nowadays eMail-gadgets for the enterprise.

The article was published on the german-speaking Linux-Magazin, Issue "August 2005".

As any fule kno, the most notorious spam blacklist is SPEWS.

ORBS, and its later reincarnation, ORBZ, also weren't exactly the nicest players on the field. I remember one incident where I couldn't send email to someone from a GMX account, because GMX - a webmail provider not unlike Hotmail etc., with several million users - had ended up on their blacklists (I'm not sure anymore whether it was ORBS or ORBZ at the point that happened, but it matters little, anyway).

This articleon the death of ORBZ has some more interesting points regarding the controversy surrounding these lists.

Here in Germany we have a free mail provider (GMX) that offers 1 GB (since a few months), for mails AND for files, and you can access them as a file system(link to German site) using the open WebDAV protocol from linux, windows or mac, so no ugly hacks are neccesary. (Konqueror can do that out-of-the-box, I think)

Also offers free pop and smtp, mail forwarding, and configurable filters

Interface is in German only, and you have to give them an existing German, Austrian or Swiss postal address when you sign up. (but those could theoretically be found on the net.)

1GB storage, unlimited hold time (keep mails forever), pop3 access, some sorta media store (where you can upload and manage any files you want, never tried it)

This is one of the best free e-mail services out there. Does POP3 as well.

Or request GMail invites -- there's tons of them floating around.

GMX is a great free e-mail service IMO. My main e-mail account is hosted there since few years ago.
Nowadays, unfortunately, GMX offers their service in German language only... So its public is restricted.

Why not just use GMX (http://www.gmx.net/)? They don't have searchable email, but 1GB for every user (free account) and up to 5GB if you purchase a pro account.

The clou: Storage is for both email and their mediacenter data storage which can be accessed using webdav. So there you go. 1GB of FREE storage that is INTENDED to be used as storage and can easily be mounted/added to your favorite desktop.

The catch: The interface is in German only.

GMX has been offering 1 GB of storage for email and files for free for some time now.
Expand this to 5 GB for 3 EUR / month or 10 GB for 5 EUR / month.

You can also share your uploaded files with other GMX members, and mount your GMX account as a network drive using a WebDAV client (they provide a pre-configured Windows client but you may use another one) .

By the way, their e-mail features totally 0wn any other e-mail service: automated e-mail retrieval from all your other POP-enabled mailboxes, custom filters for automatic redirection, SMS/MMS alerts, up to 15 aliases...

I knew all that time spent learning German at school would come in handy some day! ;p

GMX, a German ISP and free e-mail service, is offering 1GB for free. Bump that to 5GB for 3 EUR/month or 10GB for 5 EUR/month.

However the fun doesn't end here, as they also offer automatic POP/IMAP e-mail retrieval, custom filters for automatic redirection, SMS/MMS alerts, up to 15 aliases...

Oh, and did I mention you can use your capacity as an iDisk-like network disk and share your files with other GMX members? I think they even have a Windows plug-in to mount your storage account as a network drive in the Explorer.

Alas, AFAIK it's in German only. I for one, welcome our new German overlords...

I kept my GMX account spam-free for almost 5 years. GMX also has POP3 and SMTP access, last I checked. It's still scot-free. So, get yourself a decent free email provider with both IMAP/POP3 and SMTP access as well as webmail, and you're set. You can use any email client you want.

Oh, sure. My point in mentioning mutt in particular, though, was that putting HTML in the message won't really accomplish much (that, and the fact that I actually use mutt).

All in all, it seems like a really neat idea, but if I have to pay for POP3/IMAP/whatever access, I'll pass; GMX is currently meeting my needs (minus the need for an occasional trip to Babel Fish), and my outgoing emails don't have ads tacked on the end.

Right now the bet webmail is actually in Germany with GMX. It offers great spam handling and even lets you use their pop servers for free.

You just have to learn a little German first is all.

I've been using GMX for four years. I started using it way back when it was a multilingual service, but now it's only in German. It has a really good spam filter setup. When it filters an incoming email into the junk folder it indicates whether it was from a global antispam list, text scan, etc. Sadly though the free accounts don't have things like secure sign in.

to control spam. As it is now, email is still somewhat unregulated and protected by first amendment rights.

Spam can be controlled with properly configured mailers, good filters, and good habits about who you give your address out to. (plus blacklists, whitelists, etc)

Legislation being applied to this area could potentially open the door to more regulation in this area, and I'd rather not take the chance.

I get almost no spam at all at GMX. the site may be in German, which I cannot read, but they have a very effective, multi-layered, and reliable anti-spam implementation. Thier service supports pop and imap for retrieving your mail, and smpt (with auth) for sending.

I'm sure that most (smaller) ISPs would implement good anti-spam measures and policies if enough of thier users (politely) requested them.

If you are using Hotmail, MSN, AOL or similar, my guess is that you're sh*t out of luck, and it's time to change providers.

I wonder how many of these spammers are using open relays.

Whenever I read of proposed spam legislation and law enforcement attempts, I can't help but think that this somehow encourages companies and individuals to not take the neccessary care in configuring thier hosts, suscribing to blackhole lists, or running proper filters on thier hosts/servers.

When I see the disparity between email providers in the amount of spam I recieve, I realise that the admins are at least partially to blame. (My mail account at mail.com recieves approximately 7 to 12 spam emails a day, while my account at gmx has recieved only about 5 during the past year.)

Are there still any reliable blackhole lists?

Can/should email providers filter outgoing mail to regulate thier customers?

Can administrators control the spam problem?

I really don't like the idea of leaving this up to legislation, as it's likely that the DMA can buy themselves a few loopholes.

My E-Mail address is far too important for me to lose it. The address didn't change the last 3 years, and I would be happy not to change it in the near future.

My problem is that the address is from a Freemailer service (GMX). So if they start to charge for their mail service, and I want to keep my mail address, I will have to pay.

I think that's true for most people using Yahoo's mail service.
