Re:Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Yeah, except the right wing is trying to torpedo Specter's chairmanship because he's a moderate on abortion. As quoted in the linked-to article Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) says a chairman is responsible to "the feelings, the beliefs, the values, the procedures that are held by the majority of that committee", which I find telling -- screw the feelings, beliefs, and values of the American people.

Condi will replace him.
This is no suprise, though. Powell has been talking about a one term job for a while. This isn't really too big of news, cabinet members very often only stay on for one term. -
Re:Can't waitFair enough.
I'd suggest reading this, as it might (maybe) put your (and/or other people's) mind at ease a bit. It sounds like the director is really sticking as closely as possible to what DNA wanted.

Re:did they read the book?"Ford's color was never given, or I'm mistaken. We just assumed he was white."
In the books his colour was never given. However, I referred to the tv series. His colour was mentioned by the fact that he was visible on the screen. And he was quite definitely white. The book does mention him having ginger hair, or something like that. We'll see if Mos Def has ginger hair.
"I don't recall Trillian being described physically in the books"
She is quite definitely described. And she is quite definitely described as having dark hair.
As I mentioned in another thread, Douglas Adams wrote the early draft of the script. He had been working on this film for many years before his untimely death, and many of the people still working on it had worked closely with him while he was alive. For all any of us know, he may have personally sketched out the early prototypes of what he wanted this new Heart of Gold to look like. Yet, everything in this movie that isn't 100% identical to the book (or to whatever your particular preferred variation is) will immediately be jumped upon by everyone as "Disney ruining H2G2".
Personally, I intend to go to the movie and enjoy it for what it is, which is yet another incarnation of H2G2. Obviously, I expect that some things will be lifted straight from the books, radio play, tv series, records, stage productions, computer game, whatever. And, I expect that some things will be completely new.
And some of those new things will come from the minds of people other than Douglas Adams. And guess what... that's the way it would have been even if he was still alive. He let Steve Meretzky write some of the jokes for the H2G2 computer game. He had been collaborating with Jay Roach on the early drafts of the movie script. In short, he let other people have input into most (if not all) of his work.
Anyway, I recommend reading the interview with the director at the official movie site. I can respect this guy and what he has done to bring this movie to the screen. It can never be exactly what Douglas Adams wanted, because Douglas Adams didn't live to finish it. But it's going to be close enough, and that's good enough for me.
And I'm certainly not going to whine about the HOG not looking like a shoe.

Re:USCO --does not enforce--.
There are no US Copyright Office boogeymen in black who run around arresting people either.
Looks like they'll be leaving that sort of stuff to Homeland Security.
Thank God we've rid the world of radical Muslims who want to destroy the US, so we can use the Blackhawk helicopters full of jackbooted thugs for the important things, like protecting the intellectual property of huge corporations. -
Mostly Harmless
Having admired the videos of Hammer & Tongs and see that they were suggested to direct by Spike Jones when Jay "Austin Powers" Roach couldn't commit, I am not too worried. Even if this is under the Disney banner, I don't think it is doomed. Just like Pixar films, don't suck (yet).

Re:Best Friend!
Are you kidding? I want homeland security on the case ASAP. I also want BSA to send threatening letters to all Microsoft departments and offices and force them to audit their licensed software and code copyrights - or else they'll break down the doors with the assistance of Secret Service and seize all their assets! You know, irresponsible IP thieves and pirates like these are the criminals that are forcing software industry to lose $50.7 trillion (or whatever number it is) per year.

Re:Absolutely.
I agree that the media has a corporate bias. But I disagree that the media and entertainment industry are fundamentally "left of center"; on social issues, the American people tend to be fairly progressive.
If anything, the result of corporate-driven media is a bland, mainstream, offend-as-few-people-as-possible product.
Access to abortion (in at least some circumstances) and environmental protection laws are thoroughly mainstream "values", the results of the recent U.S. presidential election notwithstanding.
Indeed, the disconnect between the current administration's avowed legistlative agenda and the "values" of the average American is what makes this last election so... "interesting," to my mind. -
Successor already chosen - beware!
Gonzalez to replace Ashcroft. This guy is a madman. He "fought with Congress to keep the details of Vice President Dick Cheney's energy commission meetings secret and defended the administration's right to detain terrorism suspects indefinitely without formal charges and to deny them access to counsel or to protection from the court system".
Do not celebrate just yet. You may soon wish Ashcraft back.
Every time I think the world cannot get any more fucked, it does.

Re:Vast Right Wing Conspiracy
It was perfectly valid for Slashdot to point out the absence of Abu Ghirab photos in Google's image index, and to QUESTION if this was intentional censorship.
If anything, news sources viewed by large numbers of the public are too fearful in reporting stories that have any hint of conspiracy.
Understanding the world we live in, and the cause-effect relations between events, requires we form theories, and then test and modify these theories in the light of new evidence.
Sometimes the best theory is a conspiracy theory. You'll want some examples.
First, there are striking similarities between plans drawn up by a neo-conservative cabal in 1998, the events of 9/11, and America's subsequent invasion of Iraq. The story reported by ABC may have disappeared from the internet, but is still available from the internet archive . You can find tons of stories about this possible connection in the indy-media on the internet. Whether you buy it or not, I think it's worthwhile to keep this theory in mind, and evaluate its plausibility as new events either fit it or do not.
Secondly, it looks like there was systematic vote fraud in the 2004 election, in favor of the Republicans. This hasn't been reported by the mainstream media at all. Here is a summary and screenshots showing how the practice of "weighting" election exit poll data to match offical vote tallys changed the exit poll result in Ohio.
Conspiracy theories have been given an undeserved bad reputation. The term "conspiracy theorist" is being used in a campaign of name-calling to lower the discourse in public forums to the intellectual level of the nursery school playground. It is an attempt by powerful interest groups to keep the public uninformed. -

Young Voters Just Don't Vote
I found it interesting that young voters seemed to favor Kerry in the most recent polls, but then just don't end up voting. Another way of looking at this: even though the polls support Kerry, the ones that actually end up voting favor Bush.
Source: http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/story?id=186261
Overall, this was the only age group in the entire population that favored Kerry over Bush according to the MSNBC ExitPolls.
Source: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5297138/
It seems to me that the young Kerry supporters are just plain lazy. I really pin it on the young population for this loss. We (notice I am a young voter, but I actually voted) could have taken this election because we were the ONLY age group to really favor Kerry. No other group would have been able to swing this. The lazyness of young voters has made them responsible for Kerry's loss. I think that most young people don't want to be held accountable for the way things end up. However, by saying NOTHING we only become more responsible for what happens.
I know that the Bush supporters are fine with this situation, but the young voter population favored Kerry. If we all would have voted, it could have made a big difference.
Responsible Youth (It's (not)? an oxymoron.) -

- Violation of a work visa (after the employer was ordered to fire him)
- Eating curry?
- Photographing Cheney's Hotel
- Finding sensors on public lan near area 51
- Bribing city officials to let customers touch topless dancers
If this was on SNL 4+ years ago it would have been some funny shit.

Level of error: effectively zero
(Deep breath. I'm about to do something totally insane--try to present a rational, factual explanation of a political subject on SlashDot. Maybe its because I've been eating nothing but red M&Ms all day....)
IAMPAEO--BIHBO
I Am Not Presently An Election Official--But I Have Been One. And I can promise you, with all sincerity, that the margin of error is effectively zero. We count every single ballot, whether on the voting machines or in absentee ballots, regardless of how late we have to stay up to do it. The people in your county registrar's office total up all of the ballots from the polling places, and keep checking and re-checking until they have it right. The math is done in front of representatives from all political parties, as well as any candidate-appointed watchers that are present as well. When the election results are certified, the results are correct--with an error rate of zero.Oh, c'mon. What about...
I have been an election official for more than fifteen years--and I have been involved in counting votes on Election night in heavily Democratic wards, and in heavily Republican wards. It does not matter--we get the vote total correct, and we turn it in to the county. Then the county re-checks our work--and they carefully preserve the voting machines until they're convinced we have done the work correctly. (One year, back in the 1980s, the county had questions about one of our voting machines and called the officials back in later in the week to make sure they understood what we'd done.)Don't confuse the results announced on TV with the certified election
I have also done consulting work with the Elections Unit of a major TV network. They have an entirely different agenda: their goal is to "call" the election for one candidate or the other before any other media outlet. They are basing their "calls" on exit-polling data ("pardon me, ma'am, but could you tell me who you voted for?") in a handful of selected precincts across a state. They will report preliminary totals ("And we now see Governor Bloviate leading with 1,424,325 votes with 21% of precincts reporting...") without explaining the context (are those Bloviate's strong precincts? Who says the numbers are correct?) They're out to report fast, accuracy be damned. (Sorry, Charlie, but that's the way it really is.)The real story, the real vote total, comes when the election is certified. And the "chaos" that we all saw in Florida was the actual process of certifying an election. There were flaws (the biggest: they hadn't defined any rules for how to count votes)--but they eventually arrived at a standard, and used that standard to count votes. They ended up with a total. That's the final number.
All that said....
The total vote count will be determined with a level of error of zero. What will not be determined--and what I fear will be rampant in this election, on both sides--is how many votes were fraudulent, due to duplicate registrations, absentee ballot fraud, etc. -
List of irregularities
ABC News has a continuously-updated list of irregularities from around the country.
On the radio this morning, I heard something about a couple thousand votes already present on some electronic voting machines in Philadelphia before the poll workers arrived in the morning. But I can't find any stories about it online. Does anyone have any more information on this? -

Re:Why this is good for Christians
Speaking as a lifelong Christian, I'd have to say things like this are fantastic. Why? Well, there's two kinds of things in the bible, things that are meant to be taken literally
Unfortunately, there exists a significant fraction of the population that disagrees with you, and believes [1] that everything in the Bible is absolutely, literally true.
Sixty percent of Americans believe that God created the world in six days, that Moses parted the Red Sea, and the Noah's Flood actually occured.
It's cognitive dissonance. No matter how much evidence you can accumulate, hard-line Creationists will still claim that the Earth is 6000 years old, and that God created man exactly as he is today. They are not willing to entertain any idea that will contradict their beliefs.
[1] A friend of mine often says that people like to say they take the Bible literally, but no one really does. To say that you believe the Bible is the unquestionable Word of God, to be interpreted word-for-word literally makes one sound much more devout than those silly liberal Christians that think parts of it are metaphor and allegory.

Re:Serious questions
If those scandals are as they have been reported by some sources (and not all sources agree on this), then you might be correct with respect to France, Russia, and China. However, I don't believe anyone has made those allegations against Germany. (I could be wronge, and if so, please provide links.) Not surprisingly, France disputes these allegations, and we may never know the whole truth. I do find it difficult to believe that the French president would have been actively supporting Saddam Hussein. Of course, I also found it very difficult to believe (before we invaded Iraq) that we wouldn't find those WMD's shortly after invading. After all, the USA couldn't risk the embarrassment of being wrong on such a pivotal issue, could we?
Even if the French government (and Russian, etc.) were covertly supporting Saddam's regime, they were covertly supporting it. This means we could have used clever diplomatic strategies that would have made it hard for them to not support us. One possibility would have been saying, "OK, you want to give Saddam another chance. We'll compromise on this issue if you agree, in very explicit terms that this is his last chance. If (i.e., when) he violates the terms of this last chance, you will agree with us to launch a full-scale attack on Iraq." Sure, this is not full-proof, but had we gone that extra mile, it would have been much harder to paint us as being over-bearing. And sure, it's possible that Saddam then would have complied with arms inspectors every last request. However, these are some diplomatic paths that could have been explored, but that were not.

Mask sales predict presidential election?
I recall back in 2000 a news story about how the sales of Halloween masks for the presidential candidates predicted the election outcome (candidate whose mask sold more won the election).
Found this site keeping tabs on sales this year. W is in the lead right now (though I expect their numbers to be somewhat less than scientific).
In a similar vein, Washington Redskins home game wins have correlated with the outcomes of presidential elections. This has held true sine 1936! When they loose their last home game before the election, the challenging party wins the election. This year: Green Bay is favored to win in Washington this Sunday.
Unfortunately, the popular vote has proven to not be an accurate predictor of who wins the election...

Recalls are typically done for safety issues -- this hardly qualifies. Applying The Formula (scroll down to `I'm a recall coordinator.') will pretty much guarantee that they're unlikely to do a recall on something like this unless it because a big embarassment (a class action lawsuit like this has the possiblity of doing so, but it seems unlikely.)But apparantly, if you ask nicely, Microsoft will fix them for you for free, even out of warranty. And I'll bet the guy who filed the lawsuit knew this when he did so. My guess is he wants more than to just get his X-Box fixed.

Household Survey Sees 100,000 Iraqi Deaths
And there are some troblesome excerpts:
- There is no official figure for the number of Iraqis killed since the conflict began
- some non-governmental estimates range from 10,000 to 30,000.
- concede that the data they based their projections on were of "limited precision,"
- quality of the information depends on the accuracy of the household interviews used for the study
- report was released just days before the U.S. presidential election, and the lead researcher said he wanted it that way.
- possible that they may have zoned in on hotspots that might not be representative of the death toll across Iraq
- more household clusters would have improved the precision of the report
- There is no official figure for the number of Iraqis killed since the conflict began

Dead, flat WRONG.
They verified the presence of the seals they had placed on 3 tons (not 377 tons, or 380 tons, or 400 tons) of explosives in January. They also noted, according to ABC news, that it was possible to bypass the seals, and that therefore the 3 tons of stuff might not even have been there.

Yes, they should definitely look at that link. One of the most deplorable people in this world wants Kerry to be president (no, not Jacque Chirac). As for basing their vote on a slashdot post... come on now. Should I be basing my views on gay black men based on the posts of GNAA?
Yes, folks, this is how your average Republican voter thinks of women
Give me a break. Way to tow the dem party line. "Republicans hate women!" - if that's the case, why do more Democrat women fake orgasms than republican women?
Of those involved in a committed relationship, who is very satisfied with their relationship?
Republicans -- 87 percent; Democrats -- 76 percent
Who is very satisfied with their sex life?
Republicans -- 56 percent; Democrats -- 47 percent
The poll analysis also reveals who has worn something sexy to enhance their sex life:
Republicans -- 72 percent; Democrats -- 62 percent
And how does my link say that I'm a Republican? Maybe I'm a palestinian and I respect Arafat and think that his support of Kerry is a good thing! -
Few Bush signs in Portland. Read the books.
In Portland, Oregon, a friend mentioned that, before the last election, there were no signs in the yards in the wealthy area where he lives. Now there are seven Kerry/Edwards signs in the yards around his. There are no Bush signs.
I began looking for Bush signs as I drive around my area. I've seen none. There is at least one Kerry sign on each block, usually more.
I've heard that there are plenty of Bush signs in the rural areas of the state.
Many people in the U.S. know very, very little about the activities in their government. There are many very angry people. The ignorant and the angry are easily manipulated. To them, for example, bombing for democracy makes sense.
During the Clinton years, I read the books that were published about him. They said he was having sex with slutty women. They tried to find something wrong with his small losing investment called Whitewater. They said he may have, at some time during his being governor of Arkansas, associated with people who later turned out to be involved in questionable activities. I found the books interesting, but a little lame.
Now I've read the books about Bush. It's amazing. The information about Bush is about severe corruption of government.
The negative information about George W. Bush seems endless. Just when I think I know 10% of the corruption, I find more detail that shows I know less than 1% of it. For example, George W. Bush's brother was shown in a lawsuit deposition on 20/20 casually talking about his prostitutes and his use of government influence to make money. This is Neil Bush talking about himself.
George H.W. Bush was involved in the weapons business with a brother of Osama bin Laden. See House of Bush, House of Saud: The secret relationship between the world's two most powerful dynasties by Craig Unger, 2004, Scribner, New York, New York, USA. Reviews: Powell's Barnes & Noble Amazon
Most media exists to make money. Advertisers are understandably careful not to alienate anyone. It is not possible to develop an accurate opinion of government activities only by listening to the carefully crafted phrases from media employees who would lose their jobs if they seemed to indicate a preference for one policy over another. It's necessary to read books.
George Soros says, "President Bush is endangering our safety, hurting our vital interests, and undermining American values." If Dole had been elected instead of Clinton, the U.S. would have had sensible leadership. This election is different. It is not a matter of which candidate you like. If you vote for Bush, you are poorly informed. This is not a claim that Kerry and Edwards are perfect. They represent, at minimum, a needed change.

Re:Number of vetoes by Bush: ZEROYou understand that "my link" is to a non-partisan org, right?
I dont think he was blaming them. I read his link. I think he was just making the point (that any remotely intelligent person already knows) - that Bush is a filthy liar
Then I guess these people are lying too, right?

You understand this is an American election year, right?
any bills that were not passed were often as a direct result of Republican pig-headedness, using their malicious nature to block legitimate and often heart-felt bills
Yes, it was all those evil Republicans! How dare they stand against Kerry's "heart felt" tax increases and socialist programs! You're just upset because Republicans have better sex!
