Re:The Solution is Quite Clear but very unpleasant
How fitting that the BATF and FBI types are breaking down doors of survivalists who might have a few positive thoughts on protection from these harms, while possibly ignoring the more probable, internal threat from the far left.Agreed. There are probably more potential Tim McVeighs out there than one would be happy to consider. (Not to paint McVeigh as far left or far right, he was just far out there.)
But there's also the potential of things going from the far right, too. Look at Fred Phelps of the God Hates Fags website. He's about as far right as they come. Let's say that he or one of his followers, all of whom think AIDS is a great thing because it kills off gay/lesbian people (among others), are "told by God" that it's their duty to speed along the process and release a biological warfare agent on the Castro in San Francisco? That agent would spread everywhere, accomplishing the same thing as if it were simply dropped on a BART subway platform in Oakland.
So, I the summary of my point is far *.* is dangerous. The far left and far right are both equally ludicrous and dangerous.
As in enterprise network security, more often than not, your greatest threat is from within...True. Though it's tough to have an internal policy that will nuke east Texas if someone drops a biological agent because they didn't like the way the DOJ handled Waco. My suggested means could only work effectively against foreign anti-American organizations.
And speaking as a Canadian citizen, my shame in my country still stings strongly: it was just over a year ago that an individual who had been granted landed immigrant status in Canada (from Algeria) decided to attempt to blow up the Seattle Space Needle on New Year's 2000 in the name of some sort of Algerian independence army or some other taxi-driver crap. There needs to be an effective countermeasure to international terrorism, and I can't think of a better way than my suggestion of mutually assured destruction.
BTW, based on that incident, I'm sorely tempted to move to the US and apply for refugee status both for legitimate immigration purposes and as a publicity stunt. This incident - and a list of many other similiar demonstrations of ineptitude - proves that my country harbors (and gives welfare to) terrorists, if only due to its own ineffectiveness at keeping undesirable immigrants out.

Re:Off Topic: Re:The scary part...
Can you please site a specific instance of a "right-wing" person who has?
You may find something alluding to that HERE(www.godhatesfags.com). Disclaimer-I didn't look through the site for very long because of the goons monitoring my company policy, not to mention my distaste for this guy and his hatred. Of course any person with a reasonable amount (>baboon) of iontelligence will dismiss it as the fundamentalist ravings of a lunatic, but you'd be surprised how many people feel this way. Members of my own family, who have said they sould disown me if I married interracially, who think that homos are going to roast in hell, etc. You can tell people like that this stuff and they soak it up, because existing prejudices make it easier. -
Re:Off Topic: Re:The scary part...Amphigory,
I'm jealous of you. It appears that the world you live in is a much nicer place than the one I live in.
Perhaps you don't remember the early days of AIDS. It wasn't called "the gay cancer" because people thought it affected heterosexual and homosexual people alike. Perhaps you don't remember the rhetoric around the issue, where politicians and doctors and laypeople were saying that it only infected homosexuals. Perhaps you aren't aware of the fact that our government will fire you if you are in the military and admit to being gay. Perhaps you don't know anyone who had to hide his homosexuality because of the tremendous bigotry that is focused on homosexuals. Perhaps you hadn't heard of a young college student in Wyoming who was tied to a fencepost, beaten, and left to die just because he was gay. Perhaps you have never heard of gay-baiting... And perhaps you aren't aware that our government doesn't afford the same protection/status to gay couples as it does to heterosexual couples. It is quite possible, even, that you aren't aware that the conservative platform of "family values" is a platform that advocates for "traditional" family values...a very tightly defined concept based in 1)intolerance 2)heterosexuality 3)biblical justification. In fact, perhaps you live in some parallel utopian America where none of this has ever happened and intolerance and ignorance don't exist. All I know is that the world I live in is still very intolerant of alternative lifestyles. Instead trying to learn how to tolerate, people in my world prefer to marginalize people who are different. I wish I could trade worlds with you, but on the other hand I would rather not run away from the problems of my own.

The salon article from 06.29.98 quotes Trent Lot as saying homosexuality is a sin. Read it here: here.
Point your netscape browser over to godhatesfags , then click the "what's related" function in netscape...takes you to the Christian Coalition homepage. Hehe...looks like netscape got something right...almost makes it worth all the crashes.
Oh, you are probably already familiar with it, but just in case you havent bookmarked the page already, one conservative who constantly preaches hate (read such inspiring articles as "Whatever happened to eugenics," "Spittin Jesse Jackson," and more!) is David Duke. You can read up on all his conservative viewpoints here!

Re:Hoax or not, there's a point here...Exactly! Simply knowing that there are perfectly serious Christian sites as reactionary as CAP Reports (hilarious reading if you're planning to see a new movie) or as intolerant as God Hates Fags out there, the idea of a Linux for Jesus freaks isn't so outlandish, and I did have to stop and think twice before reluctantly concluding it to be a hoax. Two things finally convinced me:
- The name is an obvious pun, as we've all noted. Would real Christians be that sloppy? Possibly, but unlikely. After all, if they had called it something like "Christian Linux" or "Linux for Christians", we would probably all have been fooled.
- The login screen with the Lord's Prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance was way over the top. It just reminded me of the kind of thing you'd see in a King of the Hill episode.

Re:Typical German
> there is free speech, your just not allowed to say hateful sh_t
The problem here comes from the question of who defines hateful sh_t. Someone once pointed out that even Fred Phelps (www.godhatesfags.com) thinks he's speaking out of love.
I would rather have to put up with a bunch of "psychos and racists" than worry about the government what I can say.

Re:Sad day for the worldhow wonderful to see some of that glorious christian hatred shining like a golden heavenly light through the murky blackness of rationality.
you're completely entitled to abandon all desire to examine and discuss the nature of our existence, but there's absolutely no excuse for being so rude just because other people aren't as quick to give up. keep "we will never understand", "there can be no explaining it all", and your vague supernatural gesticulations to yourself and let the rest of us get down to some real thinking.
thanks!

I live in Kansas and know about these people
I live in Kansas and go to Kansas State University, and I am not surprised about this. It is all about people not wanting to change and trying to hold everyone else back in the process. Some people will not accept the truth. 99.9% of the people in the state are absolutely normal, however the
.1% that are very well organized can make the minority view heard and sometimes followed by the majority.
What is sad is that this will in the end will only hurt the children of these people. More than likely this ruling will be quickly overturned by the unorganized majority and a more modern circulum will be established, which in turn will force these missguided parents to have their children home school. When these children finally do go into the world on there own after they are 18 they will be surprise with a world they are not capable of being a contributing member of. They will only continue the cycle of ignorance(being missinformed) and teach their children the same missguided beliefs.
This is the fanaticism that can turn violent if society doesn't look out. Just look at this site to see fanatism by Fred Phelps.
I am posting anonymous because these fanatic can and WILL make life difficult for people. -
www.godlovesfags.com vs www.godhatesfags.com
according to their webcounters godhatesfags has almost a million hits while godlovesfags only 7681.
But both contribute hits to god ;) -
CyberPatrol "issues"Some stuff I thought that people should know about CyberPatrol and censor-ware in general:
CyberPatrol is bad. Not only because it is fascist-ware, but also because it is not done right. They could block just a certain part of a web site, but they don't want to. It is easier for them to just block a whole domain, and that way, it's more likely that they'll be able to manipulate ISPs and such into kicking off users who express their rights.
Secondly, CyberPatrol is funded by (a) Christian group(s).
Want to know how fucking effective it is? On a CyberPatrol-ed computer, I could go to go to godhatesfags.com, but not safersex.org. Hmm... (Oh wait, it is effective, if you're a white Christian male American conservative...)
I understand that this isn't really directly related or shtuff to the guys posting... Check out censorware.org, which is a little outdated/sparse, but still useful. And the EFF, of course. The ACLU has a thing on censorware in public libraries and stuff, too.

Re:Religious bigotry: alive and well in the USA.
CmdrTaco found the site to be hilarious
..
Well, so did I. For crying out loud, this guy attacked 101 Dalmations for attempting to "elevate dogs" to the status of humans! That is hilarious. I don't care if it stems from some deep-seeded religious belief; it's just downright funny. It has nothing to do with Christianity per se. What if I put together a Web site proclaiming that THE GIANT PINK UNICORN IS COMING TO KILL US ALL? I'll bet you that a lot of the people that preach the obligatory "respect the views of others" would find that awfully amusing.
So in some ways, the ridicule that is being leveraged towards the CAP is not attacks on Christianity, but instead on the ridiculous views expressed by the reviewer. (And let's be honest, they are ridiculous; I would submit to you that there exist very few Christians that would condemn 101 Dalmations for the reasons given by the reviewer.)
.. and numerous other posters have taken their free pot-shots at Christianity
Yes they have, some being a little less gracious and objective than others. I won't bother expanding on some of the commentary that has been given about Christianity being a popular target because of its status as the only major Western religion, or because its main "spokespeople" are often vociferous, intolerant, and bigoted, or any of the other reasons stated.
The bottom line is that when you have Jerry Falwell saying that the third Antichrist is among us and that he's a Jew, that makes Christianity look bad. When you have Fred Phelps and his "loving Christian Web site" http://www.godhatesfags.com, that makes Christianity look bad. And the list goes on. Now, nobody is saying that this is particularly fair. But it's pretty hard to argue that these things do make Christianity look bad, regardless of how diametrically opposed they may be to the hearts and minds of mainstream Christians.
But here's the thing. You said it yourself; the "potshots" are against Christianity, not Christians (or, at least, the cogent ones are.) Mainstream Christians go out of their way to distance themselves from the fundamentalist zealots that preach hatred and intolerance. You might consider that the "attacks" on Christianity are aimed at those same zealots, and not at the Christian population as a whole.
At any rate, one thing is clear: it is not the posters on Slashdot (and other forums) that paint the religion in a very unsavory manner. The extremist minority sects and fundamentalists do a more than adequate job at that. And again, I really don't think this is fair .. but hey, it's the way things are. My advice: Take it with a grain of salt. Learn to laugh at "the dark side." South Park dishes up plenty of scathing social satire, and Christianity is by no means its only target.
