Re:Damn! That means I have to accept the possibili
Jesus commanded us to love everyone even those who hate us.
Jesus, yes. God, on the other hand, commanded us to hate fags. Would you disagree? -
Re:Damn! That means I have to accept the possibili
Christians aren't supposed to hate anyone, but rather hate the sin.
Anyone except gays, because God hates fags, and he told us to murder them. Read Leviticus 20:13, 18:22, Genesis 19, Romans 1:18-32, I Corinthians 6:9-11, I Timothy 1:10, Jude 7, Leviticus 20:23, Leviticus 26:30, Deuteronomy 32:19, Psalm 5:6, Psalm 11:5, Malachi 1:3, Matthew 7:23, Romans 9:13, Jeremiah 6:15, Jeremiah 13:23, Romans 1:24-32, Ezekiel 16:49-50, II Timothy 2:24-26, Psalm 5:5, I Corinthians 6:9-11, Acts 17:30, Jude 22,23, etc. ad nauseam. Don't deny it. Just an example: "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them." - Leviticus 20:13. Please don't rewrite the history post factum to suit your agenda. What you do is just patently disonest. -

Re:Islam is the "religion of peace"
Why does the religion of peace need special instructions on how to act civilized?
You mean like 10 Commandments or something? Why do Christians need this?
Why is the religion of peace directly responsible for 28 out of the 30 violent conflicts raging in the world today?
Hmm, really? Please enumerate them. Christianity seems to have its hand in a lot of them too.
Why is the religion of peace responsible for the vast majority of chattel slavery in the world today?
Really? Care to cite a source? BTW, the Southern Baptist Conference was pro-slavery throughout the civil war. There is NOTHING in the Bible condemning slavery - in many places slavery is condoned. Are you sure slavery is something inherent to a religion, or is it more likely poverty and economics?
Why is the religion of peace responsible for the vast majority of terrorism in the 20th and 21st Centuries?
The same reason Christianity was responsible for it in the preceeding 18 centuries. Because. Now, if you would care to substantiate this allegation, I'm all ears. The IRA, FARC and ETA have killed a lot more people in those centuries than Islamic terrorists but they just haven't been getting the press coverage since 9\11...
Why are the practitioners of the religion of peace routinely slaughtering unarmed practitioners of every other religion wherever they can get away with it?
I think what you meant to say was "SOME practitioners". Again, this can equally and justifiably be said of Christianity as well. When the Army of God or Eric Rudolph kills abortion doctors or some blond-haired, blue-eyed boy next door blows up 168 people in a federal building, you don't seem to blame all Christians or all Americans do you?
Why does the religion of peace call for the murder of anyone who converts from the religion of peace to another religion?
Oh you mean like these guys? Yeah, your right...what kind of sick religion is THAT?
Why do so many of the believers of the religion of peace look forward to the opportunity to rape 72 virgins in heaven if they die while killing innocent women and children of other religions? Is it a god they worship, or just sex? If a god, then shouldnt heaven have more to do with him than their libidos?
Would you care to show where it says ALL muslims share this belief? Or have you been watching too much Fox News...The Church of the Creator thinks that the White Race was Gods true choosen people and can even quote the Bible to back it up...doesn't make it so and doesn't mean All Christians think that way. Don't mistake the beleifs a a sick minority with the whole religion.
Why do the leaders of the religion of peace routinely issue fatwas (death warrants) for anybody who questions their holy book of peace and their holy prophet of peace?
You mean like Christianity did for hundreds of years upto the begining of the 19th century...Catholic AND protestant? Think of about 5 centuries of Jews and witches being burned at the stake. Better yet, read up about the murder of Hypatia in Alexadria. You know its is bad, but again, if Jerry Falwell claims that 9\11 happened because America pissed of your God doesn't mean ALL Christians think like that...
Why is the religion of peace responsible for the sexual mutilation of millions of little girls and the savage oppression of women?
But sexual mutilation of infant boys is ok then? Christianity has not exactly been a beacon of equality for women either, save the last 40 years of so...
Why did millions of the practitioners of the religion of peace laugh, cheer and dance in the street because 3,000 innocent men, women and children were murdered by seventeen men who supposedly hijacked the religion of peace? And why dont the real practitioners of the religion of peace condemn the supposed hijackers of their religion? Why th -

Barriers to entry in the media is not an issueUmmm I beg to differ; the mainstream media/Hollywood follows the American people, and not the other way around. The mainstream tries to appeal to the lowest common demoninator, and for the most part they succeed.
The alternatives to the mainstream media already exist, and people that want alternatives readily find them. Barriers to entry simply are not an issue with the media. Sure it may irritating to be bombarded by the Scott Peterson trial and all but thats why I read magazines like The Economist. If I was a right wing wackjob, I would get a subscription to National Review or watch Fox News listen to Rush on the air, and if I was a far left loon, I would be reading IndyMedia.
The local newsstand generally has all of these publications from all ends of the political spectrum. Hell, the Maoist international newspaper (which regularly denounces modern China as a far right regime that betrayed Mao's legacy) floats around where I live. While I do find sensationalism in the media irriating, I believe that this demonstrates that barriers to entry are simply not an issue. It might be different if you want to make a living, but frankly broadband will not help that.
Having said all that, assuming that I'm wrong and barriers to entry are an issue, why do you think that we will become more liberal? It seems that for every 60% tax ceiling universal healthcare type, you have a gun nut or a religious wacko.

Re:Religious Fundamentalism is THE problemPerhaps it is correct to say that religious fundamentalism is the problem, but Islamic fundamentalists are the ones that I fear most because they are the ones strapping bombs to themselves and blowing people up, flying planes into buildings and so forth. In contrast, Christian fundamentalists stand on corners wave signs saying things like "God Hates Fags" and protest abortion clinics.
This isn't to say that I am much of a fan of the Christian Coalition, Jerry Falwell and the like, but it is very relieving that their battles are fought with votes and laws, rather than bombs and guns.

Re:Isn't this what Asimov was writing about?
haha, i'm no bible thumper, those are just the ones i could remember off the top of my head.
Yep... they're the ones that leap to mind when one thinks about the commandments. I suspect that this is because they're the ones that the people who are bible thumpers talk about the most. After all, they wouldn't want the commandments to seem at all unreasonable, would they? :)
Have YOU ever read the bible? Ever read leviticus? Believe me there is very little ambiguity as to what is to be done and not done.
Absolutely! I love Leviticus. It's a great book for pointing out how comically ridiculous the bible is.
Protestants and catholics shouldn't even be mentionned as they don't follow the bible, only the parts they pick and choose.
I've never met a christian who didn't follow just the parts of the bible that they pick and choose. Ever try to punish a christian for wearing clothing woven of two kinds of material? They get all huffy and offended! But it's right there in my old friend Leviticus and they just ignore it. Absolutely shameful. Yet many of them have no trouble quoting other parts of Leviticus and expecting people to care.
Do not confuse the bible with the slew of churches out there that have their own agenda.
The bible is just a book. It can't harm anyone directly (unless you hit them with it; it does tend to be rather thick). Churches, on the other hand, are often harmful.
It's pathetic how many people call themselves protestant/catholic as if it's an ethnic group and not a religion.
I suspect that to many people their religion is more important than their ethnic group. It's just a categorization and frankly I appreciate the warning. :) -
Re:Generalized Hatred
First of all, the grandparent post was not expressing the view that American fundamentalist Christians are equally extreme; he was simply saying that that is what Europeans generally think. You have no reason to get upset with him.
Second, I can think of several fundamentalist Christian individuals and groups in answer to your queries, from those who bomb abortion clinics, to Fred Phelps preaching the extermination of all homosexuals. Of course, you can always argue that those individuals and groups don't "really" represent Christian fundamentalism, but then, that's what everyone's been saying about Muslim terrorists as well. Only by a kind of arbitrary ideological gerrymandering can you make it look like your religion is absolutely clean while the other guys account for all the murderers and lunatics. -
Re:AmazingThere is a degree of technophobia in a number of the more traditionally Muslim coutries. Khomeni, for one, used to go off on regular anti-tech rants.
Really? Not so anti-tech that he stopped his followers from recording and mass-duplicating his "rants" onto cassettes and smuggling them into pre-revolution Iran for the people to listen to. If he were alive and ranting now, he'd have websites and a satellite channel.. Remember, even the maddest old religious bigot loves modern technology when it helps spread the word

Re:In Canada..You are exaggerating. Gunpoint?
You won't be getting a visit from the police for an intelligent study of the issue. You'll get a visit from the police for something like this.
Stephen Harper, leader of the Conservative Party, is anti same-sex marriage. The police haven't come and taken him away yet for him saying that he believes gays shouldn't have the right to marry.

Re:A little vague...
>>no business on the default fees list of multiple >>public university.
The do if the student goverment so decides it (which they have).
LOL! That is just about the stupidest rationalisation of anything I have seen this month thus far! Let's put aside the notion that protecting idiots from themselves via "consumer advocacy" lobbying interests in government is, shall we say, thick-headed.
Now, suppose Fred Phelps manages to get his filthy special interest agenda funded in a similar manner through several public interests. Or that Bob Jones University's "Student government" decides declare February 21 as "Nigger Lynching Day". I would imagine that a bleeding heart such as yourself would get mighty upset. So, yes, my friend who completely lacks reason, lobbying for private interests through a public university's roster of student fees is unethical. -
Re:Get off it.
As you point out, I have a right to not be threatened or harassed, allthough the wording rarely is that clear. Doesn;t that preclude you from threatening or harassing me while you are exercising your right to free speech?
The point you seem not to grasp is that threatening or harassing requires more than the certain content of speech. If some Grade A Asshole says "God hates fags, they deserve to die", that's free speech. (Doesn't change that he's an asshole, or mean that any sane person agrees with him.) If some other Grade A Asshole says "God hates fags, they deserve to die" while he's pointing a gun at someone, that's a threat (assault). The content of speech alone is not enough to create assault.
In any case, I don't see why you are getting so worked up, for someone who professes to love free speech so much you sure do get worked up when someone else exercises it...
WTF? Have I in any way, shape, or form, even suggested that you or anyone else not be permitted to speak? I believe that even Grade A Assholes should be allowed to speak - I certainly don't want to interfere with the rights of merely ignorant people like yourself
:-) I just reserve the right to make corrective speech of my own. -
NOW is mainstream?
In what world?
Take a look at their "issues" page.
Here's a quote from their site Right-wing religious groups have an agenda of promoting marriage without regard for the welfare of women and children (and such groups would be eligible to receive funds under this bill).
Yeah, because we all know how well most single mothersand their children have it in this country.
NOW has come out against joint custody of children.
NOW says that this quote from John Ashcroft is 'Scary' "Civilized people ? Muslims, Christians and Jews ? all understand that the source of freedom and human dignity is the Creator. Civilized people of all religious faiths are called to the defense of His creation. We are a nation called to defend freedom ? a freedom that is not the grant of any government or document, but is our endowment from God."
If you remember your history, you'll remember that NOW supported Anita Hill from the beginning when she accused Justice Thomas of sexual harassment. Where was that support for Paula Jones?
NOW is about as mainstream as Fred Phelps, the only difference is that 35 years ago NOW actually did some positive things.

Re:Pretty sad
Shit, man, he's probably gonna be in you're goddamn city at some point, he's trying to get you to agree with him, after all, just drive down and yell "Ashcroft's a fucktard!" It's not that much work. You probably won't even have to see any of those scary hippies with their infernal Puppets of Doom.
Seriously, I'm betting you think protests are dangerous, right? They're not, at all. Maybe WTO stuff, but they'll never have another one of those in the US again. It's like a barbeque, only with no food or water and nobody invited you. You yell some crap you may or may not understand ("No Blood for Oil?" Whatever.), at a wall or something because you'll never get to see whatever the hell it is you're protesting, then it starts raining and you go home. Unless you're meta-protesting Fred Phelps and he mistakes you for one of his kids and tries to rape you, you'll be fine. PATRIOT ACT protests aren't "cool" or whatever anyway, so there'll only ever be like a dozen old ladies there anyway. -

First thing to ban...
Bible.
In old testament, it teaches us that one nation is the "chosen race" of god who are superior. No, it's not just a silly myth -- millions of people really take it seriously and support the "chosen race" financially and politically and many are even ready to die for them.
In new testament, it teaches us that the abovementioned people are evil. Well, at least many popes and other Big Names such as Luther have interpreted it in that way. This has resulted in almost 2000 years of procecution, killing millions of the "chosen people".
It orders people to destroy temples and groves of other religions. Actually, the book says that the "God" of the book will kill all nonbelievers. This is a violation of freedom of religion, and certainly a sign of hate. You can find the word "hate" there countless of times. God hates this, God hates that. We can quite safely say that Bible teaches hatred.
I mean, really. Who are the people nowadays most often accused of hate crimes? Christians. Just look at this site or the infamous Nurenberg Files. Need I mention KKK? This is what is going on out there.
I don't support censorship, not even of hate pages. But if such pages or books should be banned, we definitely know the book to begin from. I believe it meets any criteria.
Of course, no western nation would take this seriously. If you're a Christian, you of course won't. No need to wonder why. Remember, even the sickest fundies preach the "message of love". -

Re:Defining Hate
For anyone joining us late in the broadcast!
The Southern Policy Law Center helps victims of hate crimes (such as the relatives of blacks brutally tortured and murdered by Neo-Nazi and "Aryan" groups) obtain legal representation.
The SPLC sponsors the Intelligence Report, which monitors the activities of violent hate groups - most of which are religious and/or racist. They also run the Teaching Tolerance project, which supplies school teaching materials to help fight entrenched racism through peaceful means.
The previous poster (who likes to post numbers that attempt to contradict the generally accepted view that fiscal irresponsibility was the hallmark of US President Reagan's administration) has characterized the SPLC as a "hate group" promoting "hatred of the rich" - which is, apparently, "politically correct".
Many (if not most) of the SPLC's contributors and lawyers are quite rich; especially when compared to the people the SPLC is typically trying to help.
So the only question in my mind is - Moron or Nazi?
I'm thinking Moron. -
THAT's not what's dying! HERE"S what's dying! It is now official - Trolltalk has confirmed: *Christian Trolls Are Dying
Yet another crippling bombshell hit the beleaguered Christian Troll community when recently IDC confirmed that Christian Troll accounts for less than a fraction of 1 percent of all slashdot trolls. Coming on the heels of the latest Netcraft survey which plainly states that Christian Trolls have lost more biting share, this news serves to reinforce what we've known all along. Christian Trolls are collapsing in complete disarray, as fittingly exemplified by failing dead last in the recent Goatse comprehensive trolling test.
You don't need to be Fred Phelps to predict Christian Trolls's future. The hand writing is on the wall: Christian Trolls faces a bleak future. In fact there won't be any future at all for Christian Trolls because Christian Trolls are dying. Things are looking very bad for Christian Trolls. As many of us are already aware, Christian Trolls continues to lose biting share. Red ink flows like a river of blood. Bible_Study_Guys is the most endangered of them all, having lost 93% of its core trollers.
Let's keep to the facts and look at the numbers.
FirstPOST leader AnonymousCoward states that there are 7000 users of FirstPOST. How many users of KDEvsGnome are there? Let's see. The number of FirstPOST versus KDEvsGnome posts on Slashdot is roughly in ratio of 5 to 1. Therefore there are about 7000/5 = 1400 KDEvsGnome users. BSD/Is/Dying posts on Slashdot are about half of the volume of KDEvsGnome posts. Therefore there are about 700 users of BSD/Is/Dying. A recent article put Bible_Study_Guys at about 80 percent of the Christian Troll market. Therefore there are (7000+1400+700)*4 = 36400 Bible_Study_Guys users. This is consistent with the number of Bible_Study_Guys Slashdot posts.
Due to the troubles of slash.geekizoid, abysmal sales and so on, Bible_Study_Guys went out of business and was taken over by Adequacy.Org who sell another troubled Troll. Now Adequacy.Org is also dead, its corpse turned over to yet another charnel house.
All major surveys show that Christian Trolls have steadily declined in biting share. Christian Trolls are very sick and its long term survival prospects are very dim. If Christian Trolls is to survive at all it will be among Trolling hobbyist dabblers. Christian Trolls continues to decay. Nothing short of a miracle could save it at this point in time. For all practical purposes, Christian Trolls are dead.

Don't buy this book!
It's common knowledge that building and owning a house is associated with homosexuality. As a devout Christian, I think it's my duty to explain to my fellow Slashdot readers the implications of this article.
You probably think I'm a fundamentalist Christian. But I'm not. I actually consider myself to be a forward-thinking bleeding-heart liberal. It's my opinion that, when Darwin invented Linux, it was the best thing that could happen to computers. While many Christians see Darwin as an enemy to the religion, I see him as the future.
You may be wondering what I am here to tell you. I'm here to say that homosexuality is not OK. And you shouldn't buy this book. You're probably saying to yourself, "But this book was written by a man and his wife." It looks like that at first glance, but here's a real picture of "Elaine". -
Re:These disease is of course mindless idiocy.....you don't see conservative Christians and Jews lining up to strap C4 to their bodies and suicide bomb their "enemies."
I beg to differ:
These may not be "suicide bombings" but they are fueled by the same thing: fanatical hatred and intolerance.
Every religion -- even non-religion -- can have its zealots willing to do anything for "the cause." Your average Muslim, just like your average Christian, Jew, or atheist, is at least tolerant of other faiths. On the other hand, every religion has nutjobs that take its dogma to violent extremes. -
Look up unpopular sites' ISPs
Just look up the hosts for some of the most extremely unpopular and controversal sites out there, like www.godhatesfags.com or www.freespirits.org . You can bet your life people have been trying very hard to shut these sites down, but they're still up. So whatever ISP hosts them must not only believe firmly in free speech matters, but also have the legal horsepower to fight the prudes.

Re:Another case of "how do we filter"?
The poster even suggested hate speech would also be relegated to this category (although the furthest it went in the article was harmful to children). How would you define hate sites? Hitler site, well that seems like a good bet. But what about godhatesfags.com? Clearly not nice to homosexuals although some parishioners might disagree. What about even Operation Clambake? They definatly don't like scientology. Heck what about a well known Anti-MS, Anit-RIAA site? Where do you draw the line for inappropriate sites? Blocking software is one thing, there you are agreeing to their definition of inappropriate content, only affecting yourself and not directly affecting the site, however a legislative solution is affecting the site itself for everyone.

What comes next? Autodarwination, I hope..

Re:A lack of Carefull Thought (sic)
/.
I shall dismember your post. Observe:
I have always believed that the government needs the most advanced weapons it can get.
Which government? Just the Third Reich, or any old collection of yahoos that believes they can morally perform acts immoral for individuals to perform? Bush's government? Andy Jackson's?
It seems to me you have already given up your individuality, and spit upon the Declaration of Independence, in your first sentence.
Violence (ie. war) will never go away, so we should be as efficient at it as possible.
Pedophilia will never go away, but I don't wish to become efficient at it. Evil religions will probably never go away either, unfortunately.
(Just one second - doning flame retardent clothing).
It goes well with the troling rig.
If this can allow the government to wipe out an opposing army and no one else, great lets do it.
Yay! And since nobody's going to come invade us, we can go to their countries and play! US homeowners have enough munitions to repel any foreign invader, even if we don't count ESR, so we'll have to send our bugs abroad.
The problem comes into play when you cannot ensure that only your target will be affected, therefore, there is a very real possiblity of harming your own forces. This is not a good thing.
Hmm, nothing to criticize here but the grammar. Oh, wait, I guess I can point out that enemy civilians and third parties just got ignored.
As soon as the scientest have incontrovertable proof that they can target an arbitrary inidividual or group of individuals, I say do it.
Did anyone else hear a volunteer step forward?
I'd like to see incontrovertable proof that incontrovertable proof can exist. Kurt Godel might've liked to see it too. (Look it up.)
We will save alot of american (british, austrailian take your pick of the allies) lives by employing this technology.
I pick Canadians, they always get a bum rap. Of course we may have to write off those dirty immigrants (you know, those supposed "freedom seeking refugees" from non-allied countries) trying to sneak through the war zones.
A lot of the technophobes are going to have a problem with this, as well as those who tend to believe in the inherent goodness of man.
Not to mention people who think carefully.
but when the start bringing up the inherent goodness ploy I always point out, as a really good, well reasoned response Hienlens book Starship Troopers (The book, not that pitiful excuse for a movie).
OK, you got me on that one. The movie really was pitiful. The Dean was rolling over in his grave.
But I can argue that war is a good, effective, desirable means of population control when fought strictly with knives, spears, swords, and axes. The problem with warfare is the environmental damage of modern weapons... still, people will create immoral weapons, and people will use them. Do you still think I believe in the inherent goodness of man, that goodness you seem ready to assign to the government?
I'm not a Luddite by any means, but c'mon, don't kid yourself that all progress is inherently good.

Re:Open Source the New Jerusalem? Look at the old
P.S., I'm always fascinated how people hold a distaste for organized Christianity and a love for the Lord of the Rings and Siilmarillion simultaneously, given the unashamedly Catholic
imagery woven throughout those two books.
AFAIK, no one has ever killed hundreds of thousands of innocent people because they didn't like LotR. I have no particular problem with Christianity in general, it's assholes like these guys that I can't stand. -
Re:don't slam religion without a full picture
I value religion for providing people with set of moral values which otherwise would be very hard to justify
yeah, it's pretty hard to justify hating people based solely on their sexual orientation without religion -
Religion vs. Applied Science?
If someone calls themselves a Christian but attempts to destroy someone, do you really think they are a Christian?Fred Phelps seems to think so:
I'm so glad that religion is there to provide mankind with such a perfectly correct, rational and loving moral compass.
(Actually, I'm happier with the idea of scientific proof of evolution, since, by extension, it proves the bible wrong, and therefore sets the stage for defamation lawsuits against all the world's bible-thumping invisible-man-watching-me rubes.)
I'm so glad that the Catholic Church is running around telling people not to use condoms in places like Uganda.
This is a modern equivalent to the smallpox-infested blankets. You really should read your history books someday.
Religion is the single most dangerous invention of mankind, and it serves only to comfort those simple enough to believe in it.
Finally, you work in the technology field. I visited your website.
Technology, lest you be confused, is merely the application of science.
Science, in case you didn't know, has always been scorned and beaten down by religion.
Yet, science, while not perfect, has greatly advanced the human condition, and is the root cause of far less of the world's wars than religion.
So, how is it that you can reconcile your position as a religious individual with your career which is made possible by science, the greatest enemy of your faith?
It seems to me that the two are mutually exclusive, and yet it apparently poses no problem to you.
Thrall me with your acumen, for you are apparently wiser than I.

This may be apocryphal, but....
I heard (through the hempstalk?)that the fellow who co-founded Lotus Corporation (and wrote the first kick-ass versions in assembler) was one of the original LSD gang (you know, leary and those *losers*).
My point? Just that "drugs are for losers" is nothing more than another sociopolitcalcorporate cheer, and about as meaningful and truthful as "god hates fags", in other words, it is based on fear, uncertainty and doubt; intending to control, corral, and stifle active minds.
I truly do not think any thing labelled a "drug" is bad in-of-itself, it is how, where, when and by whom they are used. Take it from someone who in his youth drew his own rather shaky experiental line at heroine, and today leads a semi productive life, has committed no proprty or personal crimes, spent no time in jail, and would plot the overthrow of the western world if he could get up off his stoned butt for long enough to formulate a plan.
As for programming and beer, I have found that like most of things, only recreational computing makes sense when "under the influence" or spirits or the kind.
Oh, here's a lookup on the a word in the subject line for those of you NOT on drugs ;-)
Going on means going far -
Re:Land of the Free
I'm sorry. Maybe I'm being a bit thick, but what is so bad about the United Kingdom not having a Constitution? The problem with a Constitution is that it has to be VERY carefully worded, as otherwise when the Constitution becomes open to abuse.
I'm sorry to use it, but the American "Right to bear arms" (I forget what part of the Constitution it is) is a classic example. Forgive me, I don't know the exact wording, but from what I recall all Americans have the right to bear arms and form reasonable militia so they can defend themselves if the Government rises against them.
At first sight this seems all well and good. But enter the National Rifle Association. They argue that as the military and the police have bodyarmour, the American public should have the right to own armour piercing bullets. This I think is a very bad thing, but I have to agree with them. I fully support the NRA on this matter, much as though it scares me.
On the other hand, I grew up in a civilisation that predates the US by several centuries (through its various guises as Britannia, England, Great Britain, the United Kingdom - note that I am not saying that England==Britain there, just the society I GREW UP in has at various points been those)has never had the need for a constitution, although we have charters all over the place that could be seen as very similar, has never had the need to make it law that we can arm ourselves and hence have never had the need to routinely arm our policemen. The NRA's views could be seen as an abuse of the American public's constitutional rights. Or is it?
Who has the better deal? You may have your opinion, but I also have mine.
Another example is free speech. We do not have that right written in a constitution. I also do not believe that right has any place in that constitution. Did the American Constitution anticipate the black slave trade or the rise of militant Christianity in the United States? I doubt it, otherwise the Constitution may have had clauses defending Black Americans and those persecuted by Christians in the United States (eg. Homosexuals). Unfortunately the American Constitution does nothing to defend those attacked under the banner of "free speech", hence people like the guy who runs God Hates Fags being able to do what he and his followers do.
I'm sorry. A Constitution, like Communism, works in theory. IMHO practice is an entirely different matter. -
Catholics, evangelical Protestants, and hatred
Hey there. I'm an atheist, but I just thought I would chime in here. I think that when people talk about how evil and intolerant "Christians" are, they are generally referring to evangelical Protestants (fundamentalists) and not Catholics. Even in recent days, I see encouraging signs from the RCC. The Pope's recent apologies to various groups, and his trips to Egypt/Jordan/Israel etc. are good things. Of course, the Pope could have gone further and condemned violence against homosexuals, but he didn't.
(It amuses me that the Bible says that homosexuality is "an abomination" and that people who are gay should be "put to death", shortly after it prescribes the same fate for people who eat shellfish. Yet you never hear people complain about the Lobster Eater Agenda. Oh well, that's a different topic, I'm wandering ..)
Anyway, the Pope has gone on the record stating that biological evolution is an obvious fact but that it does not conflict with the theology of the church. It seems that the Catholic Church is going out of its way to reach out to other cultures and religions in a peaceful manner to promote understanding and goodwill among everybody. This is great to see, and even though I am not a religious person, I welcome this type of outreach and I consider this type of faith to be a harmless vice.
But then ..
.. there's the fundamentalist Protestants.
*shakes head*
These people seem to be hell-bent on creating divisions among people, promoting intolerance, spreading hatred, and using whatever legal and extralegal means they have available to force their theology on other people. You've got fundie assholes like Pat Robertson, who claimed that the country of Scotland was an "evil country filled with homosexuals" when they gave him a less-than-warm reception. You've got the James Dobsons of the world, attempting to do whatever they can to preach to you and your children.
You've got groups running television ads threatening people with eternal torture if they don't convert to their religion. You've got particularly repugnant Web sites. You've got schools that prohibit interracial dating. All of this sort of segregationalist hysteria contributes to unease and intolerance. And they love it!
I believe that fundamentalist Protestants are extraordinarily dangerous people. It is somewhat comforting to know that they are a minority, but it doesn't take a whole army to blow up a building. -
some personal experienceThe local library, at my high school has CyberPatrol/Petrol installed. I have demonstrated to the librarians that, "Look, for some odd reason, I can go to godhatesfags.com, but not safersex.org. Why's that, oh responsible and caring librarian?" "I don't know. Ask the other librarian." (Nope, he doesn't know, either. "Gee, that shouldn't be like that. Oh well...")
First off, censorware is unconstitutional in public libraries. Second, it doesn't work, anyway. There is way more porn than can be supressed, while if a useful and relevant site gets blocked, you're pretty much screwed. Third, the censorware companies all have ties to evil organizations trying to impose their false morals on everyone else.
And much more... Censorware.org had a lot of good stuff, last time I checked.
