Re:I wish people would recognize...
Yesterday, June 1, there was a gun-related murder-suicide at UCLA. Two people were killed. There were no other incidental injuries.
Yesterday, June 1, there was also a concert where 2 people died and 57 were hospitalized. Right now they think it was drug-related - either overdoses, or bad synthetic drugs.
By any objective measure, the second story is a bigger deal than the first one. The first story made the national news and was the headline on most news sites (883,000 articles on Google News). But the second was pretty much limited to local news (9340 articles on Google News - Fox was the only news service to carry it nationally). Drug overdoes deaths have more than doubled in the last decade, and at 47,000 per year have now become the leading cause of accidental death in the U.S., passing auto accidents at around 33,000.
The media exerts considerable bias in the stories they choose to cover. They don't like guns, so they carry a disproportionate number of stories about gun violence. They like drugs, so they regularly ignore stories about the growing drug abuse problem. The stats I linked to above probably come as a complete surprise to most readers, because the media simply hasn't been giving it as much attention as it deserves, concentrating instead on publicizing their their other pet "issues." You can either believe whatever the media spoon-feeds you. Or you can educate yourself, do your own research, and figure out where the true problems are. -

Re:Poverty
The stresses related to being poor.
So poverty has gotten WORSE under Obama?
Yeah, that's not surprising. Obama's the FIRST US President to NEVER have a year in which GDP grew 3%.
Even Jimmy Carter was able to do that in just 4 years. Obama's had 8.
Whoda thunk that bigger government and more government control of the economy (to "fix it"!) would make things WORSE.
Yeah, most anyone without a vested interest in taking other people's money. Along with anybody not actually in power in Venezuela.

Google states that they do not store location history at all if you've turned it off, and do delete the location history if you request. See here. If they fail to comply with this, they could potentially open themselves up to lawsuits for failing to respect their privacy policy.

Re:Is Linux really any better?
I am writing this from a laptop running Kubuntu 16.04 and while there are things which I find inconvenient/annoying, I am generally pretty happy with the overall experience. I am not trying to troll you but I like my computer's environment set a particular way and I am actually genuinely interested in knowing if the OSX GUI can now support my workflow instead of me having to adapt so here goes; I use a multi-monitor setup with a panel on both screens, each of the panels has its own Application launcher, taskbar (which shows only applications from the screen the panel is on and does not autosort/group applications) and a notifications tray and I like to use focus-follows-mouse instead of click-to-focus. Last time I checked (with Yosemite, a friend let me keep their old Mac Book Pro for a month to play with), OSX wouldn't let me do either of these things (I could not get the dock to show up on both screens or get it to not group windows of the same application together and even when i eventually managed to get focus-follows-mouse working, the unified toolbar (which I couldn't switch off) made it nearly impossible to use). I realise someone somewhere might think that the interface of OS X is perfect but as far as I am concerned, I could not see myself using it in it's default configuration and since I couldn't modify it either, I didn't really see the point of getting a Mac if I was going to install Kubuntu on it at the end of the day anyway.
Ok, let's tackle these one-at-a-time. If I misunderstand, let me know and I will try to realign my thinking... I am not an expert in all things regarding multiple desktops and docks; but I might be able to help.
Keep in mind that no OS has everything; but the question is, can you "get there". And I think that the answer in your case is "Yes".
1. Multiple Docks. I am not sure if any of these might help; but there sure are a LOT of choices!2. Multiple Desktops (Spaces). Again, not sure if any of these will fit the bill; but again, there are a LOT of options...
2a. Windows Grouped by Application, and "multiple displays have separate Spaces". I found this when looking for a way to have Multiple Menubars (see #4, below). It might help with some of your Window Grouping.
3. Focus-follows-mouse. Well, there are a few "terminal" solutions. The best one (CodeTek VirtualDesktop Pro) seems to cost $40 though. If you don't like any of that, try this Google Search.
4. Unified "Toolbar" (MenuBar?). Hmmm. If the "Displays have Separate Spaces" setting won't do what you want, there are a few other options. This one might be the best overall solution. It's $15, but allows you to do several cute things with MenubarS (plural!).
Or you can always whip out XCode and create your own haxie/extension! -

This building is in a pretty trashy part of town. Not only the wrong side of the tracks but almost on top of I-15 in a busy corridor between Davis County and Salt Lake counties. That area has the refineries, the sulfurous hot springs, the recycling plants, sewage plants, plating companies, tank farms...and a high-crime district known as "Rose Park". It already smelled so bad that they put all the odiferous industries together.
I'm not surprised they are desperate to sound good.

Re:Is Linux really any better?
I have fallen into the same hole as the grandparent. I'm not happy with the desktops on the major Linux distros, I could hack my own or use an off-brand distro, but then there is the issue of updates, and just spending time fiddling with it, when I have many other things to do. So, I went the OS X route because it is usable out of the box. Plus, I'm not liking the route MS is going with Windows, where they can do an update/forced restart anytime. That and the telemetry privacy concerns.
All and all, I get about 95% of what I like with Linux on OS X. Ansible, borg, xz, and other utilities install with little issue with brew, and with proper ACL setting,
/usr/local can be kept owned as root, while letting an admin user do updates. XCode isn't bad, as I've had to write Objective C code to watch the thermal and memory pressure of a machine, and have it throttle an app before either got out of hand. OS X Server's git server is decent, and eventually I may just buy a Mac Mini for running a LDAP server and VPN server, although I have no clue if it can support 2FA, which is a must. Plus, since Mac Minis support ESXi, I can use it for another compute node if I need.I'm no expert on 2FA; but a second on Google revealed this thread, which could be helpful.
OS X El Capitan and iOS 9 have also introduced 2FA through use of an AppleID; but I'm not sure if/how that applies to LDAP.
This Google Search may prove helpful on the LDAP on OS X front. -

I have OS X installed on both of my iMac G4s. I wish it was easier to run NetBSD on them, but closed hardware is closed hardware.
What's "closed" about the hardware? Oh, you mean like pretty much EVERY GPU on the market, right.
Why would you want to bother running NetBSD when OS X is a kissing-cousin to same?
Besides, have you even LOOKED? Check out this Google Search. Looks like there are a number of NetBSD Options for PPC Macs. -

The ruling overturns a divided 2015 opinion from the court's three-judge panel and reduces the likelihood that the Supreme Court would consider the issue.
Why would this make it less like that the SC would consider the issue? From a google search of stories on Slashdot, I see courts ruling differently on this issue in several jurisdictions. That seems to solidify that the Supreme Court would take this up.

Re:Computer Fraud and Abuse ActAlso, I would note that there are explicitly contradictory signals from pay-TV services at this time. From a 1985 newspaper article:
"We know that many of our viewers subscribe to our service so that they can tape uncut movies," said Peter Chernin, executive vice president of programming for Showtime.
To accommodate those viewers... Showtime will begin in August a weekly, late-night double feature "of the best films we're offering that week. We'll run them probably at 2 a.m. to allow subscribers to set their VCRs and tape the movies while they sleep," Chernin said.
Later in the article, an executive from HBO is also quoted as agreeing that "We know that a lot of movies are taped from HBO and we are not immune to the desires of our consumers." He therefore explicitly rejected an early form of DRM which could attempt to decrease home taping quality.
So, not only did Stevens NOT reject pay-TV taping or taping without advertisements, the people who were actually running pay-TV stations at the time were explicitly encouraging it! (After all, they wanted the revenue to go to them, rather than to the video rental companies.)

Yes.
I have Windows 10 installed on my Laptop (everything but gaming) and my wife's ageing ThinkPad.
I find it noticeably faster esp. on low end Graphics. You mileage may vary.
In comparison to Win 8 (which I had installed, too and which was horrible) it's fairly consistently done and an easy transition for nontechnical users coming from Win 8.
Yes, you do have to opt out of a bunch of stuff that should be opt in. Sadly, the OS is not the only Software you're using that does it this ways. In Chrome you need to opt out of telemetry, too ( https://www.google.com/intl/en... ), Firefox does it right and lets you opt in ( https://support.mozilla.org/en... ). A lot of iOS and Android apps you probably use are "calling home" a lot without even asking you or giving you the chance to opt out (which is bad manners) etc. pp. Apple OSes are a notable exection.
I think as an educated software users we have to adapt by regularly checking the telemetry settings of the software we use like we did adapt habits like manually looking for software updates with security fixes in past times (or defragmenting the harddrive etc. pp.). Computers were never maintenance-free and will remain so. -
Re:Curious...
The 32GB base absolutely makes sense as 16GB is not nearly enough for anyone but a casual user. Load up a couple dozen Apps, store email on your phone and take some photo's and BAM, your 16GB is done.
As far as the headphones, I personally do not care. I use bluetooth and for those that still want to use headphones, there will be a lightning adaptor to do so. I really do not get the reason, though. To make the phone
.xxx MM thinner? IMO, it's already too thin and quite cumbersome to use w/o a case on it.Personally, I think it's to get rid of that damnable "I'm caught!" feeling when you get your earbuds yanked out because you just caught your headset/headphone cord caught on something.
If it was JUST the thickness of the jack, Apple already has a patent granted to fix that. -

She's not alone, though this is a Google Calendar issue, not Ubuntu: Clicky. As far as I know, this issue is still relevant.
I use(d) tasks to schedule all my bills; since they don't sync easily, I instead set them all to be all-day events, and they show up at the top of each day similar to how a task would display. Fairly simple workaround, but I was annoyed that I had to do it.

Re:Kindle app. too.
So does the Amazon Underground app. Another violator is an app called Just 6 Weeks, which started pushing notification bar ads for some game that the developer recently released. This was in the paid version too. I have since removed both. It really looks like the only apps I can trust are F-Droid and stuff that comes from their repository.
With Microsoft closing in on the adware game with Windows 10, the future of technology is looking pretty bleak. Pretty soon all computers and electronic devices will be littered with ugly, resource hogging ads. They'll have to start making higher resolution screens just to fit the new "advertising bar" that will be present in everything but free open source software.

Emotional involvement
One problem with media reporting today is the perceived need to get emotional involvement.
In it's economic zeal to get eyeballs on articles, the media has resorted to sensationalizing and emotionalism. They compete for the most outrageous, most shocking headlines in an attempt to lure readers.
...and because of this the media has lost all credibility. The readers have wised up, and most don't seem to fall for these tricks any more.We only have to look at the Trump campaign to see how this happened. Taking one single issue as an example, we read all about how he hates and has a war against latinos. In reality, he said nothing of the sort, which is 'kinda why he's got such a huge support base right now.
The media is astonished that his supporters aren't leaving him in droves... he *is* the next Hitler, didn't you know?
Everything is a crisis, everything is a war on something, everything is a conflict.
(Note: You can learn how to get around this using this one weird trick!)

Why does Google Maps on FreeBSD default to lite mode?
I was just using Google Maps, and it reminded me that on PC-BSD (both Chromium and FF) Google Maps only runs in Lite mode, despite having all the requirements.
You can fix this by spoofing your user agent string to an older browser version. As stated, PC-BSD rocks, but it's by no means a panacea (though no great fault of their own).

FB is a panopticon
The mugger likely searched the victim on FB after the mugging.
And this is the reality. You can't do anything on Facebook (even searches) without being caught in one of their algorithms to increase their profit (in this case, by increasing interconnectedness).
What's even more scary is that Facebook is now tracking and advertising to you when they see you outside of Facebook [1]. This combined with the fact that Facebook trackers are everywhere infested on most sites, means without some means of being ignored [2], you could be tracked even if you didn't visit FB.
Paranoia: it's healthy now.

Re:Short selling
I did something similar.
When I would "short" a company I would write it down, and then the price it was and what I would short it at.
I made a ton of fake money. So then I tried real time and picked a short with a call day and if I invested $100k Fake Money in the shorts and on call day I would see how much I made or how much I owed. In the first exercise with no time limit but just selling myt shorts when it hit the target I think I made something like $220k of Fake Money. When I did a more realistic experiment with a call day I owed $42k on my fake margin calls.
In other words, Short selling is difficult, even if you know something is over-valued.
That is why i think these guys are doing classic "Pump and Dump". Giving analysis like I would be able to give on certain stocks and saying they are crap...One hits and makes news and people look at the site and see they advised BUY on a stock or two and it drives up the price and they sell. That is what we are seeing here. I do not believe these guys are Anonymous.
DMD is already going up in price (their only BUY)
https://www.google.com/finance...
Also, as I wrote above, this group is most likely tied with HYIPs in the past and two Malaysian Web Hosting companies, who would be familair with Demand Media's offerings. So this and this story is, in my opinion, a ruse to disguise Pump and Dump.

Except you're cheating because you already know the solution. Here's the search people are actually going to run.

Some facts
So-called 'Universal Basic Income' will not scale up; everyone points to small EU countries who are only talking about it, haven't actually done it, who don't have trillions in National Debt to deal with. It won't work here in the U.S and in any number of first-world countries.
You UBI people also make another fatal assumption: That people, not having to work, will 'find their purpose in life'. They will not. Most people have no clue, their entire lives, what their 'purpose' is, and never find one; these people need to be given a purpose; it's called 'earning a living and surviving', AKA 'having a job'. Most people will sit around, eat, have sex, get fat, litter the planet with their directionless offspring, and otherwise get in trouble out of utter boredom and too-much-time-on-their-hands, all on the government dole.
Okay, calm down.
You are predicting that something won't work based on little more than your opinion. Let's throw some facts into the mix.
POINT 1
Taking the US as an example, since you mentioned it specifically, note that the GDP per capita in the US is a little over $53K per person. If the productivity output of the US were evenly distributed, that means that every man, woman, and child could spend $53,000 on goods and services this year, and next year they would have another $53 to spend.
Count only the working adults (about half the population) and that number doubles.
POINT 2
Productivity has about doubled since 1970. That's only 40 years ago. If you believe the trend is linear, it will double again in another 40 years, but if it is exponential, then it will quadrouple in another 40 years.
POINT 3
A hypothetical $1,000,000 invested in an index fund is expected to return around 7% interest over the long term. You need to take the long view on this rate, and not cherry-pick individual past decades - it's been consistent with the rise of productivity. See point 2 above.
Given 1% for management fees and 2% to account for inflation, that $1 million would pay out $40,000 per year in perpetuity.
The US could start a process of putting $1 million deposits aside and awarding the payouts to working class people on some schedule. A lottery, for example. If you want to work, you don't have to enter the lottery.
Note that the cost of the Iraq war was $1.7 trillion dollars, spent over a decade. That amount of money awarded to worker annuities could have reduced the workforce by 1.7 million workers, making the remaining jobs easier to find.
POINT 4
Note that we are rapidly developing self-driving vehicles. The first self-driving semi is on the road right now!
Even if the self-driving vehicle isn't useful 100% of the time (snow, limited visibility), by my calculations this will dump 2.5 million into the labor force almost instantly.
Note that Amazon is experimenting with delivery by drone. This could potentially drop another million into the workforce almost overnight. (If you include postal workers and some others not accounted for in the previous link.)
POINT 5
Regardless of whether you think it will work or not, something has to change.
You either make it work, or try to survive the burning destruction of the US, a modern recast of the French Revolution.
Do you have kids? You might consider what type of world you want them to live in.

Re:MVNOs instead?
I'd say it's quite likely that Apple takes the Google route (e.g. Project Fi) and becomes an MVNO at some point, just as you suggested. After all, Apple likes to control the experience its users have, but right now their users have to interact with carriers, most of whom are rather crappy on a good day. Moreover, being able to commoditize the network by layering themselves on top of it allows them both push network costs for their users down while insulating their users from the network carriers, which is a win on both counts, plus they can do it without having to invest billions into infrastructure that would still come up short of what the carriers themselves offer.
Frankly, I'm surprised they haven't done it yet, since Google has the right idea on this one, and by all accounts, Fi is pretty great if you're sold on the Android ecosystem already.
Anyway, Apple says they have no interest in doing things all the time. Pay little attention. Steve Jobs famously said they had no interest in making phones while knowing that development of the iPhone was already well underway and had been for years. Getting in as an MVNO is low cost and seems like a natural next step at some point down the road.
