Re:Does US have any real jurisdiction over FIFA?
Tell that to all the major dictionaries of the English language, you fucking moron.
From Merriam-Webster:
Irregardless originated in dialectal American speech in the early 20th century. Its fairly widespread use in speech called it to the attention of usage commentators as early as 1927. The most frequently repeated remark about it is that “there is no such word.” There is such a word, however. It is still used primarily in speech, although it can be found from time to time in edited prose. Its reputation has not risen over the years, and it is still a long way from general acceptance. Use regardless instead.

No wonder there are so few phones with keyboards.
How long has Blackberry been suing companies that make phones and cases with keyboards? Is THIS why most of us have suffered with touchscreen keyboards for years now? Better yet, how is a two-way pager with a particular arrangement of keys patentable or relevant? Haven't we had pocketable/wearable devices with buttons intended for thumbs since before the Gameboy? https://www.google.com/patents...

Re:RAND PAUL REVOLUTION
My question was how does a one-time high school coach go to Congress and end up being able to afford millions in hush money?
From 2009 to 2012, the average net worth change of a freshman member of the 112th Congress in three years was 50% source. They don't really need to find a cushy post-government job - they generally profit quite well and quite legally from their time in congress. This data is quite revealing.

Re:And here I am about to ditch Chrome...
There's an extension for Chrome called The Great Suspender which purports to free up resources by automatically suspending tabs when inactive for a period of time (unless they're on a whitelisted domain). It greys out the tab text/icon, unloads the page and replaces it with a "click to reload" dialogue; it basically just redirects to: chrome-extension://klbibkeccnjlkjkiokjodocebajanakg/suspended.html#uri=ORIGINAL_URL_HERE, so you'd have to remember to whitelist inactive forms and such. It doesn't reload the original pages when you start chrome until you explicitly click the reload button, too, so it helps with restarting the browser a bit faster.
Still no way to get tree style tabs in chrome, though. I miss those.

# of users
The downside of this is that they can afford to be totally unresponsive to users. Google has recently replaced their classic Google maps with a piece of junk. Don't take my word for it, go to the Google maps forum, this link for example: https://productforums.google.c.... While every single one of the close to 1000 posts on that thread (except for the Google representative's initial post) is negative, Google can afford to ignore them (and in fact, not even respond to them), because the complainers constitute a tiny fraction of the number of users. (And it's not clear how many they represent, i.e. how many other users hate the new version but haven't taken the time to post their displeasure--or may not know how to do so.)

Re:Low power UV Bug zapper
used for that, you would be better off using a light behind a fan, and feed the exhaust to a old nylon sock. spray the sock with alcohol before you empty it. skeeters can't fly against a wind, so they head towards the light, and get trapped. the alcohol kills them by dehydration. This method kills a local population fairly effectively.

Re:Exodus
Hold on there mister, the Laschamp event only lasted less than 500 years, and occurred in the middle of an ice age, over 41,000 years ago. I don't know about you, but I see a whole lot of unknowns that make it very difficult to conclude that "the climate didn't change".
... I would prefer to not draw any conclusions from what little data we have of this event. So your preferences are different than Richard Alley's. He concluded at 43:01 that "We had a big cosmic ray signal, and the climate ignores it. And it's just about that simple. These cosmic rays didn't do enough that you can see it."
Maybe this is because Richard Alley's estimate that the Laschamp anomaly lasted "for a millenium or so" matches other estimates that are longer than 500 years.
We have the technology to measure GCR's, and we have the technology to measure cloud cover. Let's verify the theory of GCR's and cloud formation, let's quantify it, and then let's see if we can accurately predict cloud cover and irradiance fluctuations based on this data.
I've explained that the maximum impact of this mechanism has been estimated to be responsible for no more than 23% of the 11-year cyclical variation of cloud cover. Furthermore, there’s no long term trend in Svensmark’s data, which would be necessary to explain the long term warming trend that’s been observed. For more information, see chapter 7.10 of this textbook.
Update: Other relevant papers include Kristjansson 2002 and Laut 2003, followed by Svensmark’s response and Laut’s rebuttal. More recently, Erlykin et al. suggest that the apparent correlation is due to direct solar activity, while Pierce and Adams state: “In our simulations, changes in CCN [cloud condensation nuclei concentrations] from changes in cosmic rays during a solar cycle are two orders of magnitude too small to account for the observed changes in cloud properties; consequently, we conclude that the hypothesized effect is too small to play a significant role in current climate change.”
Another update: Snow-Kropla et al. 2011 makes similar points.

Re:Detecting Drones
I assume detecting the RF signature of the transmitter controlling the drone is the best way.
Of course there are these problems:
1. There are many signals on the bands used for RC.
2. It is possible to build an autonomous drone.
3. In these days of software defined radio, people can spin up non-off-the-shelf, non-standard radio control systems.
Hedy Lamar solved this problem. http://www.google.com/patents/...

Re:And all 9 Android/MIDI users were happy
Or how about Bluetooth audio that actually *works*? https://code.google.com/p/andr...
The thing to keep in mind is that Google doesn't have a one-track mind. They don't have 1 developer who can only perform feature development work on one thing at a time. MIDI support has very likely been a side project brewing for a number of years that finally now is stable enough to release. Meanwhile, they have lots of other people who have little to no clue what that guy was doing with MIDI because they spend a lot of their time looking into problems similar to the ones you've identified. But obviously those people aren't done with their work because the feature isn't in production yet.
I consider it very unlikely that some other highly useful feature would have been worked on instead, had they opted not to add MIDI support. I'm not sure why they chose to feature it so prominently in TFS or to even mention something like that at Google I/O, but my guess is that it was a 20% project for someone who has a passion for MIDI, so it's not like Google could tell them, "stop doing this useful contribution to the Android open source project in your spare time". 20% time at Google is exactly for this type of thing.

What about Microsoft in all this?
Not to muddy the waters, and perhaps a little off topic, but I've read several articles that estimate Microsoft brings in between $2 billion to $8.8 billion in license fees from harware makers using Android. These are two year old posts:
https://www.google.com/#q=micr...
http://www.zdnet.com/article/m...
And,
http://www.forbes.com/sites/ti...
The last link asserts MS makes five times as much from these fees than it does on the Windows Phone OS. There have been recent developments in settling disputes about fees paid by Samsung to Microsoft, so some of the numbers are not up to date, but one point that's clear, Android is not free to hardware makers and indirectly to hardware purchasers but do result in substantial Microsoft revenue. -

Not only Creationists manipulate search results
Want to see something interesting? Do a Google image search for "black couple", now search for white couple. Results are likely what you'd expect, results filled with black and white couples respectively.
Now let's see if there's any Country specific PSYOPS going on. Compare a search for "American black couple" to a search for American white couple. The "American Black Couple" search results looks similar to the "Black Couple" results, but the "American White Couple" results are primarily pictures of multicultural couples.
Why are the mixed race couples present in "American White Couple" but not for "American Black Couple"? This is not-so-subtle psychological manipulation. It's yet another bullet point on the long list of "anti-white" propaganda. There's nothing wrong with being an interracial couple, IMO; What troubles me is the racist application of the PC agenda. Searches for American Black, Hispanic, and etc. minority couples aren't populated with interracial images, only white couples.
Oh, perhaps it's a fluke you say? Well, then let's try this again using "British" instead of "American" searches, and compare the results: "British Arab couple", "British White Couple". The first search produces the results you'd expect, but the latter results are full of interracial couples, interestingly so is "British black couple" Results are clearly being influenced, most likely due to a psychological operation (PSYOP). In the United States propaganda is being pushed hard for white & black interracial couples, while in Brittan Arab and Indian couples are left "pure" while the PSYOP pushes black and white couples to be more interracial. Now that you're aware of this you'll likely see more examples of said PSYOP in other forms of media.
For some fun, let's try out Russia: Russian Black Couple Wow, interracial and gay, heh. Isn't homosexuality what PC propaganda is primarily focusing on in Russia? "Russian white couple" results seem tainted with "white Russian" the drink and a white building famous for the exhibitionist couple in its window. "Russian Couple" turns up primarily heterosexual white Russian couples, but just look at how many more homosexuals there are in "Russian straight couple" Ah, that must be the other term the PC PSYOP is Google bombing. From the search results I would guess that Russia is under far less PC pressure and influence than the USA and Brittan; Wouldn't you say that's a fairly accurate political prediction?
I've noticed many other such political manipulations occurring over the years, primarily it was news media furthering the Politically Correct Narrative, but now it can also be seen in search results and comment sections full of political shills. Not even our schools are safe from

Re:article correction
Oh really? Wikipedia says Ive designed the case. A search on Ital Design does not show any link to an iMac. A search on DeLorean Museum shows no link to an iMac either. A search on Petrolocious says nothing about the iMac. A search on Studio 34 also yield no results. All my research indicates that Giorgetto Giugiaro designed some prototypes for Apple back in the 80s. What are your sources again? Care to retract your statement?

Re:Court Rules in Favor of Patent Reform
Is Commil's patent "ridiculous"?
-
Re:So what was the patent?
If you bothered to read it, the patent is in the article: https://www.google.com/patents...

Re:thought the article was joking ...
You can find out all kinds of stuff from Google.

Re:Requires...
Cable modems are a bit of a special case, and not in a good way. By design, they do what is called "DOCSIS Provisioning". As you might imagine, given that the 'Data over Cable Service Interface Specification' is produced by CableLabs, an industry R&D and standards organization operated by cable companies; the process is designed for the convenience of the service provider, not for the user.
Most cable modems do have some sort of web interface, config settings to fiddle with, etc.; but when you connect one to a cable network, after performing the low-level analog black magic required to get a working digital channel up, the modem makes a DHCP request, which the operator CMTS responds to with an IP and a TFTP server address from which the modem downloads a configuration file. The modem then applies that config file, ignoring any manual configuration made, and operates accordingly.
If you fancy a look at the gory details, Here are some links; and there is a software package for playing with being the party doing the provisioning. Punchline is, though, that a successful cable modem connection more or less implies that the cable modem will be operating according to the provider's configuration for the duration of the connection. Depending on whether or not your ISP is a dick about it, you may or may not lose access to http status pages, SNMP, and any other features the modem possesses; but that's all their call. A disconnected cable modem isn't much use; but it will generally show you whatever its firmware has to offer. -

Re:Slashdot videos suck!
Videos/podcasts and similar formats are definitely not for every setting, but they do allow you to get to know a person a bit better than a simple transcript does. In a video, you can see a person's facial expressions, you can hear emphasis, and you may be able to make more of an emotional connection. For a podcast, you can listen in the background, during your commute, etc. Each format has its advantages/disadvantages.
I agree a transcript would be awesome though; sorry that I've not gotten around to that yet (I do these in my spare time and suggested to Roblimo that he might want to run a shorter version). If you want to help, I've set up an Amara import here. In general, Passionate Voices is a community project (the videos are under CC-0, i.e. free to reuse), and help is always welcome, including with doing itnerviews.

Re:Finally
Actually science is not my God because I never gave science supernatural or superhuman powers.
God: 2. (in certain other religions) a superhuman being or spirit worshiped as having power over nature or human fortunes; a deity.
How is faith in atheism not a view to live by?
So you live by faith in atheism. But you don't think you have a religion. Heh.
If you are an example of a faithful atheist, I pray to God that I never get that foolish.
Give me some examples on what religion gives you that I don't have and why it's more rsional then what I believe and why.
This entire thread is exactly that.
You don't get it. That you don't get what I'm talking about is part of why your atheism has zero attraction to me. It's a stupid religion for the fools who hate religion (!).
