Air pollution ALONE may have taken more than a million lives. Perhaps that seems trivial in a country of well over a billion people but it's 1/2 the number of people in their standing army

If we look at the population of China at 1.379 billion people vs. the US in 1970, the year the EPA was founded, at 205.1 million the equivalent percentage of the US population in comparison to your 1 million would be 148,730.

Even if we go with the same year to look at the population, The US is at 323.1million. The equivalent number of today population would be 234,300. Damn near that many people die per year from air pollution in the US. Hell, in a little over 4 1/4 years, a million people die in the US from air pollution. how would one do that in this case? Ask Getty for a copy of every photo they ever had so they can filter search results? These won't just show up on Getty's site, but on sites that have licensed images for web use from them.

One of the features of Google Images is a "find other sizes of this image" function. If Getty did provide Google with copies of all their images, it'd be pretty easy for Google to block copies from Google Images. (Note: the pic I selected is one of Getty's royalty-free pics.)

That's what baffles me about Getty suing Google over this. Google Images is the best thing that could happen to Getty. Not because of the publicity, but because Google Images makes it trivial to find copyright violations. Getty just has to put the URL for one of their copyrighted images into Google Images, and use the "find other sizes of this image" function to get a list of websites using that image. It's then trivial for them to cross-reference the list of websites to confirm they've properly licensed the image. Asking Google to neuter Google Images just reeks of a decision by some clueless manager or lawyer, with no input from someone who's actually on the front lines trying to find copyright violations for Getty. This is going to result in more violations of Getty's copyrights, not less.

Then I need to sit down and eat (15-20 minutes) and then clean up (10 minutes). Of course, I have to wait at least 30 minutes to an hour to clean since the pans need to cool or they'll warp. And you can't leave the pans sitting around, especially in an apartment. You'll get roaches. Lots of them. And ants.

Then there's the cost of fresh food. If it's not on sale it's expensive. If it is on sale it's about to go bad. You can freeze meat, but vegetables & fruits don't freeze well (fruit it tolerable in smoothies but nothing else). Packaged dinners are a great buy because they keep for months. I can buy them when they're on sale, stock up and save. I can't do that with Bananas. They're worm food in 5 days tops.

There's a reason why women used to be home bound. Food preparation was a full time job. As pay decreases they moved into the workforce largely to make up the difference. Processed foods made that possible. But wages keep going down. So we need foods that need less and less prep time and cost less and less. There are consequences.

You can get induction countertop stoves. They work really well and it heats up so fast that it actually throws off the rhythms of some quite experienced cooks.

From what I can find, total defense spending in 2017 was $793.7B, and the total budget was $4.147T, which comes out to about 19% of spending (or ~4% of GDP) on military, not 25%. Certainly too high, but not quite as bad as reported.

Dividend alone: no homelessness, no hunger, increases available jobs (probably full employment?), decreases cost of welfare (make people less-poor), trivial to pull off without increasing taxes in 2016. With universal healthcare: A little tougher to do without tax increases in total on someone, although probably can pull it off in 2022. Shunt OASDI payments entirely onto the rich: likely 45% top tax rate instead of 39.6%, higher wages at the low end, and lower unemployment (if we're not hitting permanent full employment already).

This plan practically requires cutting working hours to avoid a labor shortage. I'm looking for a 7-hour work day or a 4-day work week.

Weather patterns are becoming more habitable, arable land is increasing, icecaps limiting shipping are melting, more natural resources (fishing, oilfields, etc) are becoming accessible, etc. Climate change may cost Russia's economic competitors in both money and political stability. A decent chunk of the Russian economy is based on oil and natural gas exports. Many other countries have some of these incentives, but Russia is the big winner of climate change, and they have every incentive not to take action. I would not be at all surprised if Russia was actively promoting anti-climate change ideology. They have a strong motive, means, and opportunity.

On a big.LITTLE chip you can migrate threads from a big core to a little core quickly because they share the same registers. A Coffee Lake/Gemini Lake chip might not need to do that - you could have cores sharing an L3 cache but not much else and just relying on the OS to do the migration. And if you look at the Lenovo patent the patented thing is not 'having big and little cores on the same chip' but rather the way you decide whether a thread runs on the big or little core. Intel could invent their own scheme. Or just leave it to the OS.

Actually it's not a bad idea. The USP of Windows on ARM is 'better battery life'. Unfortunately that comes with Atom like performance. A Coffee Lake/Gemini Lake HMP design would offer the low power of an Atom when the system is idle but also the high power of a Coffee Lake when it is not. And you can have a whole bunch of Gemini Lake cores in the space taken up by a Coffee Lake one. So you might sacrifice 1-2 Coffee Lake and have 4-8 Gemini Lake in the same space.

If Intel can spend R&D on a package which has Coffee Lake and an AMD GPU on it which is basically just for Apple, I reckon they could spend R&D on a HMP chip to attack Qualcomm with.

Actually another option would be to dumb down the integrated graphics. I bet you could get away with just a frame buffer for most users who are just running a GUI and not doing an 3D. So gate all the 3D stuff with a Mosfet and make sure you can power it down.

Intel clearly cares about power consumption and battery life and Windows on ARM shows they've got some way to go to yet. HMP and more work on optimizing the power consumption of the integrated graphics solution in the lowest power/performance state is the way to go.

Robotics is great for automation of tasks. The type of AI we have now is great for expert systems and chewing through large amounts of data. The combination of machine learning and robotics have exciting prospects for eliminating mundane jobs.

The combination of robotics and AI is pretty cool for things like Baxter, but less on the AI and more because it's easy to set up. Separately though, Robotics HAS ALREADY been eaten manufacturing jobs since 2000. Output is up, employment is down. That's the worry that the WORKERS have with AI. The bosses? Hey, they think AI is great. But the sort of change that AI looks like it's going to bring about doesn't require robotics. It's stuff it can do in a server farm across the globe. Liiiiiiike, doctors. Doctors get paid a lot. Especially to translate your symptoms into a diagnosis. If a computer could do that better (and people trusted it to do better), a lot of general practitioners would be out of a job.
