Google hold back? Backfired on them... apk
Lookup Google Chrome EFast (a malicious doppleganger created by OpenSORES code for Chrome being out there - think about that).
* Google NOT "holding back" BACKFIRED on them (per my subject line above).

No TOTP w/o expensive, insecure SMS
I'm surprised why more people are not enabling authentication.
It's in part because these providers insist on using SMS as the preferred second factor despite its disadvantages compared to U2F or TOTP. SMS has two problems:
SMS is expensive Cellular carriers in Slashdot's home country charge 10 cents per received text message unless a subscriber pays hundreds of dollars per year for a cellular plan including unmetered text messaging. I doubt that most people would want to pay their cellular carrier 10 cents every time they check their email. SMS is insecure SMS messages can be intercepted, such as by social engineering a replacement SIM out of the victim's carrier or by exploiting SS7 flaws. U.S. National Institute of Science and Technology has warned firms about this, but firms haven't been listening. This wouldn't be a problem if services like Google, Twitter, and Steam offered a way to set up TOTP without first setting up SMS. But they don't. Google says "first you need to complete SMS/Voice setup", and the instructions for Twitter include "set up your personal account with the service on your phone" as part of the first step. Nor do they offer a way for someone who has set up TOTP to disable SMS without also disabling TOTP. Twitter in particular sends SMS on every 2-factor login attempt, in effect treating TOTP as a backup for SMS rather than vice versa.

Re:Helvetica is just another "Sans" type font
> there are three basic types of fonts, Sans, Serif, and monospace,
There are at least 2 properties of typefaces.
* Serif along with the opposite Sans Serif, and
* Proportional along with the opposite Non-proportional aka monospacedYou are conflating proportionality with serifs. Traditionally, monospaced typefaces are Sans Serif, but that is NOT a hard rule.
For example, you can have:
* monospaced Serif typefaces -- e.g. Courier New (which look like crap on electronic displays, but look good in print)
and
* monospaced Sans serif typefaces. -- e.g. Inconsolata, Source Code Pro (which look great on electronic displays, but look OK in print.)The easiest way to tell if a font is serif or not is to look at the "S" or "s".

Re:to put this into better perspective
And little more perspective... This incident in India is similar to the 1948 Donora Smog event in Donora, PA, where steel factory air pollution and an unusual weather event created a smog that over the town that sickened thousands and killed 20 people. It was one of the key events that triggered the clean air movement in the US and eventually led to the Clean Air Act. https://www.sites.google.com/s...

Re:it's a temporary gap.
I see what you mean. Look at this depressing place. It's such an ugly street because it was built before minimum setbacks, maximum floor area ratios and so on. And people are walking in the street, so you can bet people are getting mowed down by cars every day. Also you can't fit a 40-foot fire truck on this street so the whole place is a massive fire hazard! It's a good thing we've outlawed building such places like that anymore, because with all the carnage, no wonder everyone looks so sad.
So I stand corrected. Thank you for educating me. I feel more informed already!

Re:IR link
OBEX started off on serial and IRDA and moved to Bluetooth. You could presumably run it over WiFi - e.g. encapsulate the packets into TCP/IP or UDP. I'm guessing done right - with the right windows size basically - you should be able to get close to the native speed of the WiFi connection.
There's a standard for OBEX over TCP/IP
https://books.google.com/books...
https://i.imgur.com/WhzUaDB.pn...
The problem would be how you'd balance convenience and security. With Bluetooth you need to pair. With Wifi you need to know the password for the network.
So what happens with OBEX over TCP/IP? Both devices would need to be on the same subnet, unless you had some sort of evil NAT avoiding technique to punch through to an external server. But is that what you really want? I.e. allowing anyone to read and write files on the device? OBEX doesn't have any security built in because it was designed for IRDA or Bluetooth where the security comes from proximity or pairing and usually a "This device is trying to connect? Allow once, allow always, deny" dialog. Run it over TCP/IP and you've got an unsecured way to read and write files and that seems dangerous. Even the dialog would be easy to fake unless you do SSL certificate verification which is fine for webservers but sucks for devices on the the same subnet.
Honestly I think I'll stick to SMB shares. The speed of those is limited by the storage device, not the network. You can saturate a Wifi connection with a cheap NAS. You get Wifi security, such as it is these days and you can password protect the shares. Obviously it's not ideal, but it's better than OBEX where you get no security with a naive OBEX over TCP/IP connection.
SFTP isn't too bad either. I like it because Macs listen by default and you have a certain amount of trust in the device identity because of SSH fingerprints. Also AndFTP has a nice Sync feature so you can sync a directory on an Android device with a Mac.

Re:Patented
Lavarand is the subject of this patent and I wonder if CloudFlare has a license?
The filing date of the patent (the date it's effective from) is Jan 29, 1996. US patents are good for twenty years. As I write this, it's Nov 8th 2017.

Re:Prior art?
This older patent while not exactly the same as the Corephotonics patents would seem to be necessary for the Corephotonics technique to work but Corephotonics didn't cite it in any of their patent applications. That could spell trouble for Corephotonics. Apple could challenge all of their Corephotonics patents on that basis. At the very least, Apple could force Corephotonics into a lengthy lawsuit that only ends up in cross-licensing instead of mutually assured destruction.

It is but not locking doors = negligence
It is but not locking doors = negligence (or ignorant error) & despite laws against what you call 'burglary' it isn't stopping it.
* The tools & knowledge ARE OUT THERE to do so, unquestionably (& I provide a FREE one that is "bulletproof & bugfree" since 2012 to date publicly below...)

use *LITE* version
That, and Facebook, are the 2 biggest memory hogs on my phone I wish I could delete
If they came pre-installed with the phone, and you can't actually reflash a decent ROM (LineageOS) because of locked bootloader, you can still uninstall the update and then disable them. The App will still take place on your flash, but at least they won't be running and hogging system ressource (memory and CPU cycles).
If you *need* them installed (because of networking effect because all your friends, your family, your significant other(s) keep stupidly using them), you can try the Lite version that Facebook produces for 3rd-world countries. They consume much less resources. (But might miss some feature : Facebook Messenger Lite only features text chat, no video/audio calls).
Regarding the other common hogs:
- For Snapchat, I don't have any idea.
- Skype also has a Lite version, but Microsoft hasn't enabled it in the playstore for all users, so you need to side-load it yourself, e.g.: from apkmirror. -
Re: In the long run it doesn't matter
It would if the land were in its natural state... but it's NOT. It's been DECADES since Florida has had anything vaguely resembling a natural coastline or terrain. South Florida wasn't "developed" so much as "terraformed".
How to envision Florida:
1. Dig deep lakes and lots of canals.
2. Dump the excavated rock and dirt to raise the level of the surrounding terrain.
3. Repeat on grand scale.
Here's a great example -- https://www.google.com/maps/@2...
It's the city of Weston, Florida (approx. 10 miles west of downtown Fort Lauderdale). The area north of I-75 is literally underwater (though it's only a foot or two deep)... from a car driving west along I-75, the Everglades north of I-75 looks more like "Lake Okeechobee" than the southern edge of Lake Okeechobee ITSELF does.
Look at the satellite photo of the area, and realize that 30 years ago, the area south of I-75 looked EXACTLY like the area north of I-75. Notice how the developer dug the lakes as long linear canals to maximize the amount of new waterfront property AND minimize the distance that the excavated fill had to be hauled before dumping.
The area further south (Pembroke Pines, Miramar) is similar. Notice the STAGGERING number of linear lakes everywhere throughout the area. The big rectangular lakes are former limestone strip mines... they're HUGE, deep, and considered highly desirable to have in the back yard because, unlike natural lakes, they're generally crystal clear, blue, and are too deep and rocky for things like aquatic weeds to grow in (so they don't stink from rotting vegetation the way natural lakes do). Environmentalists HATE them, homeowners love them.
The area between Weston and Pembroke Pines (Southwest Ranches) LOOKS a lot more "solid" and less watery than the areas to the north & south, but that's mostly because THAT area was originally developed a lot earlier... the average yard height in Southwest Ranches is a few feet lower than the average yard height of homes in Weston, Pembroke Pines, and Miramar because the developer didn't have as much dirt to spread around, and it was spread around a lot more evenly across the entire area (instead of concentrating the excavated fill in a smaller area surrounded by deep, large lakes). The houses themselves in all the areas have first floors that are approximately 10-16 feet above base flood elevation, regardless of how high or low the rest of the yard might be, but yards in Southwest Ranches tend to end up submerged under an inch or two of water for a few days if we get an extended period of heavy rainstorms.

Patented
Lavarand is the subject of this patent and I wonder if CloudFlare has a license? Insert comments on the frivolity of the patent and of the patent system below.
I suspect that the noise of the camera sensor contributes as much randomness as the lava lamp. And it's thermal or quantum noise, so probably a good random source.

" It just patents a method of presenting it in software, and only covers one specific implementation. Go read the claims: https://patents.google.com/pat...

Re:Time to give credit where credit is due
Okay troll, AC bites back. Cut and Paste wasn't an innovation, it was an evolution of their OS. They touted it as a major feature primarily because of the broken (at the time) Android implementation which they refined upon. There is no patent on Cut and Paste owned by Apple. They are not fighting the true owner of the patent, because the real owner has pledged not to use its patents for evil.
By the way the company with the patent on Cut and Paste is IBM

Re:How Hard Is It To Curate Youtube KIDS Properly?
Or, come on, at least offer an whitelist option on the Youtube Kids app?

Re: Yeah never mind that...So wait, trying to correct someone's naive or incomplete understanding of a subject is trolling now? As if you've never done it yourself. Right?
Talk about false idols, you choose to worship the trolling abilities of one who wasn't even trolling.
Of course, as you said here:This is probably hard to grasp for the narcissists around here.
It's probably a good thing you don't display an excessive interest in yourself. Certainly, you don't excessively admire your supposed lack of ego enough to brag about it here. No. Not at all.
And we're back on the subject of irony.
And now I'm trolling. But I'm also dead serious -- the general rule is that the first person to bring up ego has the biggest one in the room. You might want to get that checked out. -
Re: Can anyone say "monopoly"?
It's a near monopoly in the USA. We can expect the same kinds of games and tricks Microsoft pulled, such as taking a loss in Market A to gain market share in Market B to force out competition, forced bundling, ghost product announcements, and other tricks pioneered by the likes of Standard Oil and IBM.
Not even close. If I want to by something, let's just say a computer mouse, there are literally 20 different physical stores within a 10 minute drive of my house, and I don't live in huge metro area. There are (a quick google search later) hundreds of different online retailers that, do NOT go through Amazon, that I can order from ( https://www.google.com/search?... ).
Claiming that Amazon is a monopoly is almost laughable.
