WTF? Bullshit fool... apk
See subject: I have lists of sites using bitcoin script (that I block out immediately via hosts which IS what my program is for, building up lists that grow to blockout just like they do vs. TONS of kinds of malware)
&
Again there's always Opera to stall javascript GLOBALLY & make "exception site" by site prefs to allow it on sites that DEMAND it (ordinarily I ditch a site like that & find alternate that don't require it... & there are ALWAYS those (/. is a PRIME "example thereof" in fact - I don't require script here, you "registered 'lusers'" do as script/cookie slaves, lol)).
APK

Re:Bloat
It used to be, especially prior to KitKat, but it stopped being "complete crap" a long time ago and now is little more than personal preferences. Samsung's launcher is a bit weird, but easily replaced. Underneath though it's pretty much as Android as Pixel and seems to run just as well.
"Unnecessary processes" don't run. Hell half the shit people complain about are basic functionality of the phone. If you want a feature phone, get a feature phone instead of a phone with features. Most of the "unnecessary processes" are listed right in the marketing material and providing the phone without them would be just open up the opposite complaint: "I bought X why can't the phone do it out of the box! OMG class action!"
Whenever I feel like laughing at idiots it's always fun to read the 1 star reviews on the ant+ service helper on Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/... Idiots basically saying the equivalent of "But I never plug my ethernet cable in, why does my computer have an ethernet driver!"

Once sites like that fill search results
I'd never go back to that site.
So how will you deal with the frustration when you find that the majority of the top ten results from a particular web search query come from that site and others like it? It becomes tedious to add a dozen or more -site:domain.example terms to every single query. Google Search used to allow blacklisting a domain, but this feature has since been permanently discontinued. I found some promising browser extensions for users of Google Search on select desktop browsers:
Google Chrome for desktop Personal Blocklist Firefox 56 or later Personal Blocklist (not by Google) Firefox 52 ESR or Firefox 56 Hide Unwanted Results of Google SearchBut what works for Chrome for Android, Edge, or Safari? Or for DuckDuckGo or Bing?

About time
I've been manually accomplishing the same thing with Quick Javascript Switcher to turn off JS on sites which abuse it, and The Great Suspender to freeze background tabs.
I also keep Windows Task Manager's CPU graph in the notifications bar so I can see if my computer isn't dropping to idle. That's what originally led me to start using The Great Suspender. Although in my case it wasn't crytocurrency mining scripts, it was poor coding on Google's Photos and Drive websites which kept chewing up CPU cycles in the background. -

Re:Nothing new...
There is also Debian noroot with some performance hit (it rewrite paths with strace). It's a shame that anything uses hardcoded paths in 2017. Ideally userland should run on Android/ChromeOS with at most a recompile and replacement "X" libraries that do native graphics.

Because they watch you sticking plugs in..
When I was four I stuck a sterling silver spoon in a socket.I remember. Blue flash. Found myself against the other side of the hall. My savvy mother kept that blackened spoon in the kitchen drawer for years. And sometimes I wound up eating my tomato soup with it when I was still quite little. I never played with an electric socket again. I have no fear of electricity, but I do have respect for it.
As for all the different plugs. The British ones are generally recognized safest, but I do confess they reflect a nanny-state mentality. And as I tend to be careful
... I am partial to the US's simple polarized fork. I have traveled quite a bit and have seen a lot of plugs. But the hidden issue here is the use of safety standards as a fig-leaf for good old trade protectionism. It is the classic end-run around trade agreements. Not to mention the ridiculous IT standards war over connections to peripherals. And so now to the topic. I have a 5X, which I like fine. And in my personal experience the USB-C cable is great. Symmetrical so a final late-night hookup to charge just before sleep is a breeze. I was also sure to buy high-quality cables so I have had no issues. There is a Google Tech who dutifully tests them. Okay.. found him. Benson Leung But there is clearly a lot of corner-cutting crap.. I would love to see USB-C take over. So practical. Same at both ends with symmetrical connectors. I have a big box of USB alphabet soup (mini micro custom) that I would be happy to recycle. Not calling Goodwill yet, however.

"trusted" businesses or persons.. uh huh.. Who does an advertising company "trust"? Probably anyone who signs a large check.
So far as I understand it they do keyword scans.
Stop being dishonest. You fully well know what they do.

Ads/script/malware rob speed/security/privacy/bandwidth.
Hosts add speed (via hardcodes/adblocks), security (vs. bad sites/malware/poisoned dns), reliability (vs. dns down), & anonymity (vs. dns requestlogs/trackers).
Less power/cpu/ram + IO use vs. DNS/routers/addons/antivirus + less security bugs/complexity & faster vs. addons/routers/remote dns!
Avoids DNSChangers in routers/IP settings & dns redirect (99.999% of ISP DNS != patched vs. it) + DNS tracking & lighten DNS load & resolve faster from local RAM!
* Via what u NATIVELY have in a FASTER kernelmode IP stack!

Re:Cheaper to license, costlier to support
I'd agree with your and the parent's assessment as well.
Back in 2007:
* Windows stability was joke.
/que Your mouse has moved, please reboot!
* Linux stability was legendary. Custom kernels FTW!Ironically, in 2017:
* Windows is (finally) stable
* Linux seems to be getting more unstable with each passing yearOn the other hand, who knew that:
* Windows would turn into a complete clusterfuck of spyware
* Linux would dominate the Top 500 supercomputers, and be on 2 billion devices
* Windows Phones. MWUAHAHA! LOL. Even with a ~20 year head start MS _still_ couldn't figure out how to make Windows on a Phone sell.> Linux support of notebook computers
Yup, that has always been an Achilles heel of Linux. All the *nix geeks (myself included) switched over to MBPs (MacBook Pros). We get a good GUI and BSD out-of-the-box. Dual booting, a dedicated Windows box, VMWare are not going away anytime soon but at least we have choices.

Re:Facebook tracks your MAC addresses as well...
The App has no way to know the "names" of cell phone towers either.
Wait... you trying to tell me you never saw a notification from a cell tower notifying you to which cell tower and which network you are connected?
That thing where it lets you know the operator and the label of the tower you're connected to, usually named after the neighborhood it's placed in?The App can only use/post the location.
And what would you call a designation attached to such location of a specific cell tower? How about "a name"?
What about: the strongest signal wins?
Hu? A cell phone simply has one antenna. Not to eyes. It can not even "look at a light house".Number of "eyes" or antennae does not matter - "the strongest signal wins" is precisely how the phone (and thus the app) knows that at Time001 it was near one tower and at Time010 it was near a different tower.
Or if the "eyes" and "lighthouses" is a too confusing metaphor - try foghorns or loud music.
Or picking up different radio stations on the same frequency as you drive down the road. Even a blind passenger could tell where you're at simply by listening to the music changing on the same frequency. In fact, "the strongest signal wins" allows for triangulation of movement - an app can tell the strength of the signal from tower A and WHEN it was overridden by the strength of the signal from tower B.
At the intersection of those two signals - there you are.
Hell... an app actually sees any tower even remotely in range, allowing for higher precision in urban areas. The point was about MAC address. Unless your phone exposes an API (and my web browser on my laptop most certainly does not), there is no way the App can know the MAC address and send that to the server.
MAC address case and cell tower case are two different events.
Frankly I don't know what my cousin's kid has running on that box of his. Or the permissions he gave to scripts and whatnot. For all I know it's probably crawling with spyware.
BUT... considering that today almost any piece of hardware comes with a "social component" where you can "share" the crap you do, games you play, places you're at with your "friends" - and most often it does that by "logging in with Facebook"...
Who needs spyware? Fucking drivers are calling back to Facebook.Hell... I had a situation not so long ago where an overburdened Firefox, with a whole bunch of tabs, started crashing on me... causing my screen to start turning off and on. WTF?
Turns out, Firefox was taking NVIDIA drivers with it as it crashed - cause a graphic card driver is now a hybrid app, with a web browser of its own, so it can "connect" and "share" and "login".But you are right that it doesn't even have to be the MAC address. Gathering geolocation WOULD do.
Hell... it'd do a lot better than a MAC address to identify an actual person.
But why stop there, when he came to my home with his mobile in his pocket, running who knows what, accessing all the cell towers and wireless routers along the way, from his front door to mine. And if you can ask your phone to look for wireless networks around you - so can any app you gave permissions to access Wi-Fi.
Same goes for any other hardware, software or personal info on the phone. If you can see it, so can an app.
In fact, an app can often access system files and various other telemetry data much easier than the average user. Or even the above average one.
And everyone happily allows apps to do just that.
Cause everyone wants their Vibers for nothing and their tweets for free. -

The entire fiasco that is Windows 8 and 10 demonstrates pretty clearly that Microsoft is completely clueless about user interface design.
Why should they care? [click 5 year] They have always been imitators, never innovators.
