Blocking of https://*.google.com in Egypt soon
Egypt and other countries that want to block Signal will now have to start blocking https://.google.com/ and https://.cnd_domain_here/ real soon now.
This would allow non-encrypted Google searches and non-encrypted CDN traffic. Since most users in those countries know their government is spying on them, er, I mean protecting them from bad stuff on the Internet, this shouldn't cause too much domestic political blowback.
Face it, if you are in a country with draconian censorship or government monitoring - like North Korea and possiby China - you'll need to use stegonography to hide the fact that you are even encrypting things. Furthermore, if you need to "encrypt and hide" more than a relatively small amount of data, you'll have to use a technique that is "custom made" or at least a "custom variation" of well-known formats to avoid detection. I'm not saying the people in Egypt are in this situation now, but people in some parts of the world are.

Go to CAST website.
I googled. Do you mean:
Center for Applied Special Technology, something for people with disabilities?
Google Cast, now called Chromecast?
Cast software, something for SQL?
CAST LA, a group trying to end slavery?
Council for agricultural science and technology, which also has nothing to do with space propulsion systems?
In short, what are you talking about? -

Re:Kiels Comment is SPOT ON
You know what the biggest thing that's deterred me so far is? iCloud. I'm locked into the entire apple ecosystem because I love how all my contacts etc sync seemlessly across my devices. Once the Mac line is so underwhelming for its price that I do switch, I no longer need my iPhone or my iPad. I can buy an android or whatever else I can sync with.
If you have contacts syncing on an iCloud account and a Gmail account both active on your iPhone, then iOS will bridge the two pretty much. The contacts will get transferred to the Google account, too. Just try it. Disable the iCloud contacts in your settings. You'll get a warning that it will remove the contacts from the phone for that iCloud account, but you'll see nothing will actually disappear -- because they all exist on the Gmail account you are also syncing with still. You can log into the respective websites and confirm that way too I guess.
I'm a long time iCloud user (was actually iTools when I joined), but only recently became a smartphone owner. Was interested in the iPhone SE, but ended up with an Android due to cost and my desire to wait for a newer version of the smallest iPhone first. I have this app on my phone, and it totally works. My iCloud contacts show up with all the correct info on my Android address book. I can add/edit them on the phone too and it will sync back to Apple, but I prefer to use the iCloud website instead. The developer has a separate app for iCloud Calendar syncing to Android. I also have it, but I have less experience with it.

Re:They're not
Now you're just saying "it's fast because I say it's fast".
Well, I think that browsers are demonstrably fast.
But we have discussed at length all the stupid ways in which its performance is wrecked.
We - you and I - have not. But I've scanned a few of your other posts. It looks like you expect to be able to open hundreds of tabs and not use any resources (unless those tabs are looked at).
I don't think that's a common use case, and I think that most users and developers would agree with me. When I open a tab, I expect it to load. And when I activate that tab I expect it to be fully loaded already. if I wanted a list of stuff handy and I didn't want it to load, I'd keep that stuff in my bookmarks. Which is what I do, of course.
If you really want a browser that doesn't load tabs until you look at 'em (and I can understand that use case - it's just not mine), maybe write a plugin.

Re:Title is wildly misleading
The sane high-thrust booster choice is RP-1/oxygen or even CH4/oxygen these days. Indeed I'm speaking about the fuel cost. Liquefying oxygen or methane per unit of mass is pretty much the lowest-cost thing one could come up with - below one dollar per kilogram for sure. Mixing a heterogeneous mixture of solids and curing it in a casing is definitely more expensive. Apparently, the cost is something like 50 Euros per kilogram for Ariane 5 boosters. Now that's of course meaningless if the liquid rocketry gadgets are as expensive as it they have been until now, and for many systems, I'd expect an SRB to be preferable for the "initial kick" , but with engines like Raptor or BE-4 on the horizon, this could change.
-
Re:Why they are slow?
The idea of not hosting your own local copy is that if everyone uses a common source for the library, then the browser should already have that resource cached even if it's the first time you hit the page. For large enough libraries that the Google CDN (or another CDN) includes it, it's worth it.
https://developers.google.com/...
https://www.asp.net/ajax/cdn
https://www.keycdn.com/support...Now, for obscure libraries, you're better off hosting your own so that you can control the version and not worry about the referenced script changing/moving/breaking stuff.

Re:What about the OSX equivalent of Vista?
Linux does so due to patent concerns; Apple, clearly, lacked those concerns when they implemented their own native NTFS support and shipped it with their OS as a default.
Um so did Linux. I suspect the issue with patents was from a company which didn't want others to implement NTFS correctly. You know a company that has a vested interest in keeping other OS from implementing their filesystem correctly. I let you guess which company that is.
More to the point, on any sane Linux distro you can just go into your package manager and install FUSE and the NTFS drivers. Where do you get the NTFS drivers for a Mac?
If only someone built an Internet search engine that helps people find things. Note there are paid and free alternatives.
Does Apple provide them? No. Does Apple even provide a FUSE subsystem? No. Will your 3rd-party FUSE subsystem and filesystem drivers continue working after the next round of updates? Likely, no; certainly not after an OS upgrade. Do any of these issues plague the average Linux distro? No.
Everything you described is the same in Linux. By the way FUSE is not what you need to use NTFS in Linux. You need FUSE to use other filesystems (FUSE==Filesystem in Userspace) generally and ntfs-3g to implement NTFS specifically. ntfs-3g is not part of the mainstream Linux installation and is controlled by Tuxera.
I wouldn't quite say it follows exactly what Linux does; with Linux, you get your FUSE drivers from your OS vendor and can reasonably expect them to continue working after an update, which is important if you happen to have programs or documents that you need reliable access to on a a FUSE partition.
Again FUSE does not get you NTFS. FUSE sets up the framework so Linux can use other filesystems like NTFS, GmailFS, etc. You still need ntfs-3g or Captive NTFS which are 3rd party.

It's Hiya, and I don't like its lack of privacy
This is merely a rebranded version of Hiya, which still requires surrendering your entire contact list and conversation metadata to a third party without any masking.
Then again, even if each phone number was stored as a PBKDF2 hash, since there are only 3-4 billion legal phone numbers in the NANPA numbering system (given 370 area codes). I estimate this would take under 45 minutes on a quad-GPU system (divide by the number of nodes in your cluster). I suppose this is a decent hurdle, but not quite good enough to make me happy. Maybe the solution would be to also include the victim's area code's primary state in the hash (which would then require 12-36 hours to break), but then you'd have limited utility when dealing with interstate regions like the DC Metro area or the Tri-State Area.
Security and privacy often butt heads, but I think that the right design can facilitate the right balance. The same goes with security vs freedom (we all know the Ben Franklin quote, right? "Those who sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither"). None of these are opposites.
I'd feel a lot better if Hiya had a regular transparency report, but I can't find such a thing.

State religion is wrong, but not evil
I'm far more concerned about the number of Americans who want to make Christianity the official religion of the US.
Though I would not want that to happen, I don't see, why it is a graver concern, than Sharia.
Christianity is a the "official religion" of a number of countries, most of which are routinely used as examples for the unwashed Yanks on how to live. Did you know, British monarch is the head of the country's church? Yes, Britain has a state church. Or take Norway — Bernie Sanders' favorite place — they too have an official "state church".
It seems wrong to you and me, because we are Americans and value the First Amendment, but it is not evil.
Meanwhile, the two countries, where Sharia is the law of the land, are Iran and Saudi Arabia... And Islam, unlike Christianity, makes civil law part of the faith. Though it may have been an improvement over some barbaric traditions it replaced in the 7th century, Sharia is decidedly evil today.

Re:Up to 6, huh?
Google Hangouts supported multi-user video chats too. Up to 9 people at once using a phone, tablet, netbook/chromebook, or computer. Right up until they ripped the feature out and replaced it with a new app which only supports video chat between two people on phones. (Actually I think the video call function in Hangouts still works, just the ability to initiate a video call via Hangouts from your contact list or web browser has been removed. If you manually type in a number or contact name from Hangouts' video call tab, it seems to work.)

The former is run of the mill corruption, it's not cronyism. And the latter doesn't sound like it either, even assuming the contractor's license covered a legitimate societal need rather than just being another government feed tube.
Ironically, he did that because he couldn't find a doctor to certify that he was disabled in the knees after being an auto body specialist for 30 years.
Still not cronyism.

Re:what's so "unthinkable"?
That's reasonable. It allows implementors to implement whatever they want of the spec.
And as soon as you fall off the spec, those patents aren't covered. Whether Google would have run afoul or not would depend on how they deviated, as in did they use any of the patents in non-conforming material.
Note that Android manufacturers are already paying Microsoft licensing fees for open source software that they are shipping
Showing that Microsoft is more than happy to use the patent hammer when it suits them, so you'd better be careful you don't step over the lines Microsoft has laid out.
Finally, any patents relevant to most of
.NET are expired or soon expiring, so they don't matter anymore. Is that so? Because
.NET keeps evolving and new patents keep on being filed. Just take a look at the list of patents. I picked one of the later numbers, and it was filed in 2013. -
Re:I predict a lot of misunderstandings about BI
I encourage you to take a look at the spreadsheet labeled "WageTax", and the one labeled "EmploymentCost".
Single individual making $150,000 takes home $3,932 more per year; employer cost is roughly $9,300/year cheaper (assuming a low 18%-of-salary cost of employment, although it's usually 25%-40%). Buying power difference is estimated here as a 9% increase, although that's again a conservative estimate.
Single individual making $60,000 (about median) takes home $6,289 more per year; employer pays roughly $3,720 less. Buying power difference is about a 19% increase.
For married households, it's bigger, although the costs to the employer don't change (they drop by the same amount).
Taxes don't need to be raised on the highest income earners; they can be lowered on businesses, notably on payroll (tax taken based on how much wages you pay).

That is bollocks. M$ did the embrace, extend, extinguish tactics with Java by "adding" unportable extensions. Java programs written for the MS platform where no longer 'compile once run everywhere':
Yes, that's what people do with open standards: they extend them and come up with their own implementations and enhancements.
hence Sun sued rightfully, both in legal as in moral sense.
Morally, Sun had been deceiving and defrauding the Java community for years at that point. And the fact that legally, Sun had a good chance of prevailing already told you that Sun had an iron grip on the language.
Where do you think open source software would be if C, C++, or the UNIX kernel couldn't have been functionally extended because AT&T had a perpetual monopoly on extending them?

In order to BE a COMPETENT software engineer (especially architecting LARGE systems & I've got ~ 40 to my name since 1994)?
You had to have been a tech, network admin, db admin, webmaster as well as a SECURITY GURU (assuming that you want to be actually GOOD @ your job that is). It means knowing how to secure all types of servers, databases, perimeter defenses (firewalls, routers, restructuring or rescoping networks, etc. - et al) & yes, securing code too.
You can TRY cut me down but you're SO far below me in this field, even in security, it's NOT funny.

Re:Ah, Deutschland!
They need to buy magical Holland fairy dust? Or did you have specifics in mind?
And it's not like everything is just peachy with immigration in the Netherlands. They have gang problems and a growing resistance to immigration.
I highly doubt the way a government runs a country or manages immigration can be considered fairy dust. But while you're talking about peachyness note that the gangs well and truly predate this migration. This has been a problem for many MANY years. As for the growing resistance that's a general right issue which is getting power not only in europe but all over the world right now. The anti-establishment in this case is represented by the Freedom Party and it's riding the same wave that Trump did. You don't really think 49% of Americans are racist assholes do you? Anti-immigration is just one of the Freedom Party's platforms and that provokes a few extremists to come out of the woodworks.
Of note is that the links you provided show a rally of 1500 people. That's nothing in a country of 20million sitting on a postage stamp. The links also don't fit your narrative. A few people complaining against immigration rather than immigrants causing trouble.
Or maybe I should be a good afraid little citizen and gobble up the right wing media bullshit like I'm supposed to. Nah I prefer to hear what the leaders have to say about it.

Re: There is a legitimate dispute
Sadly, you are very wrong. One of the biggest problems ot the scientific fields of today is precisely that debunking existing theories achieves literally nothing for the people doing the debunking.
Scientist careers today live and die by citations - how often their published work is cited by others. The problem is that published works that debunk an existing theory get cited several orders of magnitute LESS than the work they are trying to debunk. Worse yet, among people who actually read the "works of disproval", the majority only slightly change their opinion of the work being criticized.
So no, in the current environment it is highly improfitable and illogical for a scientist to engage in anything but original work (or work that at least looks original).
"Debunking" is a very soft term. But if you look e.g. at "Unidentified curved bacilli on gastric epithelium in active chronic gastritis" (by Warren and Marshall), which identified a bacterial cause for most peptic ulcers, and followup-paper "Prospective double-blind trial of duodenal ulcer relapse after eradication of Campylobacter pylori", "debunking" the prevailing theory that fatty diets and stress are the primary causes of ulcers, they received over 4000 and over 1000 citations, respectively. That is more than many scientists collect in a lifetime.
Or, too look more closely, "Proxy climatic and environmental changes of the past 1000 years" by Soon and Baliunas received 190 citations, despite being utter crap. That's apparently more than any other paper by Willie Soon, and in particular more than any of the papers on astrophysics he ever wrote.

Hosts files have no such issue
See subject: Hosts block infection blocking ability to communicate w/ sources of infestation in 1st place (more proactive vs. antivirus letting you be infested & removing it IF it can. It's better than "heuristics" inaccuracies antivirus uses too - false positives galore it's prone to).
Hosts = NATIVE part of IP stack you already have using FAR less resources + moving parts for exploit (antivirus is prone to as this article shows along w/ TAVIS ORMANDY finding security holes in antiviruses galore)
* Hosts = IMMEDIATELY EDITABLE by users (e.g. notepad.exe) for "self-patching" adding OR removing entries manually.

DNSChanger type attacks = nullified by hosts
See subject & 2 ways: 1st by bypassing DNS + all its security issues altogether for your favorite sites you make 'hardcoded' @ top of hosts & secondly by NOT LETTING YOU GET THESE bogus machinations IN THE 1st PLACE BY BLOCKING ACCESS TO THEM (or phish email links for 'targetted attacks').
* FACT!
(Your IP stack bypasses routers since it gets requests 1st & since you don't NEED dns for your favorite sites? There ya go - DIRECT - plus again, can't be harmed by what you can't touch (or when it can't touch you) so hosts blocking facilities make my claims here reality...)

Re:but what about...
I'm not sure where you are located but I've never seen a bartender or waitress refuse to serve a paying customer and even if they did, many times the person doing the ordering is grabbing something for a friend, ordering for the entire group, etc...
I've seen it happen at bars and clubs, though it's more common that the person is being 86'd by the bouncer because they couldn't keep their head off the table/bar or were obnoxiously drunk. I've also seen liquor store clerks turn sales away because they could smell alcohol on the customer's breath. I've also seen flight attendants refuse to serve drunk passengers on airplanes. Lots of US state and cities have what are called SIP (Sales to Intoxicated Person) laws.

Re:If you want to punish speech that "promotes hat
Last year, crime has indeed risen by about 4 percent. Statistics also show that the majority of this rise is indeed due to foreigners and refugees committing crimes, BUT - and that is a very, very significant but - almost all of these crimes are related to crimes only Non-Germans can even commit in the first place, e.g. not leaving the country after their residence permit has expired, and so on. When you ignore this type of crime, there is practically no change compared to previous years. Most notably, there is no significant rise in violent crimes, and sexual assault is on a decline. The claims of the raping, murdering, child molesting terrorist refugees are, in german reality, the immature nightmares of the extreme right wing
"immature nightmares"? You are mentally ill, aren't you?
