Re:What part of this advertisement is news???
There's also price. Of course pandora has many more features, perhaps a comparison is in order. @#$!@#$ slashdot doesn't support tables, so this is the best I could do :
Pandora
Pandora
ARM Cortex-A8 600MHz CPU
128M ram
3D opengl ES 2.0 acceleration
800x480 4.3" touchscreen LCD
Wifi
Keyboard
dual SDHC card (both expansion and storage)
Internal battery and USB charger
$329.99 / £199.99 (Inc VAT) / E249.99 (Inc VAT)GP2x WIZ
Wiz
533Mhz ARM CPU
64M ram
3D opengl acceleration
OLED Touch Screen 2.8" 320x200
No wifi (BUT easy to add because of USB host)
No keyboard (BUT again, easy to add because of USB host)
single SD card (both expansion and storage, 99% sure SDHC card)
Internal battery and USB charger (thank God ! compared to GP2X F-200 this is heaven)PSP
PSP
PSP cpu 333Mhz
32M ram (64M for the psp slim)
3D acceleration (?)
480x272 LCD screen (great screen imho)
Wifi
MS pro duo expansion (expensive, only storage)
Internal battery and USB charger
Probably USB host capability but not useableSurprisingly of all these devices it's the PSP that has the largest library of emulators (even a "somewhat playable" n64 emu, something the pandora devs think impossible (read the gp2x forums
... well ... euhm tomorrow should be better, right ?)As an ebook reader the PSP blows the socks of the WIZ though, even if just because of larger screen, and it is also larger than the pandora, so I wonder.
This list is limited to devices with actual useable gaming controls. The iphone/ipod touch and the nokia n810 are obvious competitors, but lack (decent) gaming controls. Actually the n810 is kinda nice, I ought to try one.

Re:What part of this advertisement is news???
Though the real successor of the GP2x is the Wiz:
http://gp2x.co.uk/And the difference is smaller between those. I'd take the Pandora over the Wiz though, except for form factor maybe. The resolution of the Pandora is the best part

Re:It doesn't solve the problem
Ever heard of the GP2X? Runs on linux, designed to be easily developed for, plays MP3, OGG, WMA as well as several video formats. Has TV-out, USB and runs several emulators as well as homebrew and commercial games.
http://www.gp2x.co.uk/
I'm thinking about getting one. -
Re:Encourage homebrew
Once again I gotta reply to this thread and ask that you guys take a look at the GP2X
I bought one and I never looked back at the other guys/soldiers out here (I'm deployed to Iraq) who bought PSPs and all they talk about is how damn crippled the DRM-loving Sony PSP is.
And no I'm not a frigging paid shill damnit. Just a happy owner of a product that actually listens to its customers -
Re:No, no they couldn't
When someone gives us a handheld that has a video output that allows us to play the games on a television, then they can claim supremacy in the console wars (if they outsell the consoles.)
Like the GP2X? It runs Linux on dual 250MHz CPUs, has TV out, USB host and client hardware, and a whole slew of other wicked features. -
Gravel In Pocket VS. GP2X
Nice little handheld, that GIP. I can't help think that they've got a diluted group of products though. I see nothing special about their line of PCs, beyond what I can purchase locally, and (IMO) a superior alternative to the GIP is the GP2X. It doesn't have GPS, but it does have MAME, XviD/MPEG, OGG/MP3, eBooks, and runs on AA batteries & SD cards, and has stereo+S-VHS out.

Case Against their argument: GP2X.
The GP2X is a Linux gaming platform done right.
Microsoft's straw-man shenanigans overlook the reality that Linux/FOSS on the GP2X has resulted in a superlative gaming experience for many who care to look beyond the hype and behind the curtain and see that, in fact, having access to the full suite of Linux tools in an open fashion results in superlative code being written for the fun of all .. And while the hardware specs themselves may not be comparable, its quite feasible that the success of the GP2X (and it has been successful, indeed) will lead to a GP4X/GP8X built on the same platform, from which a great deal of ass-whoopin' can be delivered to both Microsoft, and Sony as well.
With the difference being of course, that Sony have a gate opened for Linux hacking, and for the porting of all GP2X code to their platform, with ease. And this could, indeed, lead to a many-headed hydra Microsoft won't have the swords for ..
Prediction: In 6 months, we'll see Linux as a gaming platform tour de force. Its only just warming up, yo .. -

Re:Ultimate Handheld Game Device
I'd love to have one unified, well-designed, attractive and ergonomic handheld game unit preloaded with a lightweight, unlocked, extendable OS and emulators for every system ever made. I'd pay a lot of money for that. But that won't happen in my lifetime, because of the approach the game companies take to copyright law and the razor-and-blades marketing approach.
Oh yeah? How about a portable gaming system that runs Linux and is homebrew friendly (unlike PSP and GB)? Maybe you should give this little guy a try.
It already has a nice homebrew community behind it.
And cheap? How about $180? Is that cheap enough?
From the "About" page:
"It can play games. It can play your Movies. It can play your music. It can view photos. It can read Ebooks. It runs on just 2 AA batteries - And it can do all this in the palm of your hand or on your TV screen."
And...
"It runs the free Linux operating system. This means a whole world of Games, Utilities and Emulators are at your disposal. Quake, Doom, SNES, Megadrive, MAME, Media players and Applications to name just a few."
And...
"It's open. You want to develop your own games for the GP2X? Go right ahead. The SDK is included with the system free. Not since the days of the Amiga has a system been so easy to develop for, commercially and for fun." -

There's this fantastic modern invention called "google"... http://gp2x.co.uk/

Re:Will they ever uncripple the video?
If you want a video player without a hard drive, there can be only one solution: GP2X. It's ARM9 powered, has 64MB RAM, USB2, SD, and the aforementioned QVGA-res TFT. It will do about 2500kbps video, which is enough to play your average MPEG4 movie (MPEG 4, Dvix 3.11,4x,5x, and Higher, XVID) without recoding at a lower resolution. It will play back 6 hours of video or 10 hours of audio on two AA batteries - and it takes AAs! That makes me happy. On top of all this, they're only $189.99 so you can afford a big SD card or two for the price of anotherp player
:) It runs Linux and they provide SDL. But best of all, it has a composite video output. You can watch it on a TV if you have one handy (and buy or make the funky little cable.) The cable's about $15. -
Speak politely to your distributor...
Well, I rang the UK distributor, and spoke to a very friendly and helpful lady there. I told them I was interested in the GP2X but was concerned about the availability of the source.
She told me that she had just read the news herself. She said that 'Craig' - it sounds as though he is her colleague who deals with the manufacturer - was going to contact them himself. She said that she was sure he would put a post on the front page of their website http://www.gp2x.co.uk/ when he had some news. It does look as though they keep the news up to date on their front page.
So, if everyone gets their local distributor to help, maybe we can sort this out...

Re:It all comes down to memoryProgramming for the PSP seems like a real waste of time and money when you compare it to the GP2X. The GP2X has 64MB of RAM, two 200Mhz ARM CPUs and uses normal SD cards for storage. It runs linux and has a freely available SDK. Not that you even need the SDK, you only need GCC and SDL. It also has a vibrant developer community.
So where are all the GP2X stories on slashdot?
-
Re:Really too bad!
I have one on pre-order. The first batch should be sent out in a couple of weeks. Since it uses Linux and SDL, it should be easy to port new games and apps to.
To quote the official UK site:
It's open. You want to develop your own games for the GP2X? Go right ahead. The SDK is included with the system free. Not since the days of the Amiga has a system been so easy to develop for, commercially and for fun.

Re:PSP reign supreme?
GP32/GP2X, man.

Re:I will buy one...
My question is, is it the "GP2X" or the "GPX2"?
http://www.gp2x.co.uk/
Look at the actual device, it says "GPX2" on it, yet the rest of the site and everyone else is calling it the "GP2X"... O_o -
