Bit more info - can it be as good as humans?
A little more info from the BRS Labs website:
"The system takes the input from existing video security cameras (no need to change equipment); recognizes and identifies the objects in each frame and passes that data to its Machine Learning Engine. There, the system 'learns' what activity is normal for each unique area viewed by each camera. It then stores these LEARNED memories, much the same way the human brain does, and refers back to them with any and all future activities observed by the camera. If any behavior falls outside of the norm, alerts are generated."
Sounds impressive, but will the algorithms be sophisticated enough to watch grass grow and realize that it's normal behavior for the garbage truck to come by weekly ... but still send an alarm when a burgler steals your stuff! -
How these security cams will actually be used
The A380 is a long haul aircraft and there isn't a lot to do up front with automated cockpits. So in the interests of "security", the pilots will probably "monitor" the cameras
... keeping a particularly close eye on attractive females. And how long until the first footage of the Mile High Club shows up on YouTube?
One of my all-time favorite "caught in the act" via webcam was Duncan Grisby using the opensource motion program to catch a burgler in his flat - technical details of his setup.
Speaking of cams, here is a nifty BirdCam of House Finches - look for baby chicks. -

Re:Don't bother - just use a burglar web-cam on Li
An oxford student managed to capture some crispy clear pictures of the burglar who stole his laptop computer... he had a webcam which periodically took a picture and sent to to his private web page while the machine was on. And the OS was Linux.

Use a webcam to watch for war-drivers
Have a webcam watching your front lawn so you can catch 'em on video. A related classic is the Duncan Grisby saga where a thief broke into his flat and stole Duncan's computers and webcam
... but not before it FTP'ed several nice mug shots of the burgler elsewhere. -
Re:Techical info
Yep. It's also like the GNU GPL that Mr. Grisby intends to use when he releases his Python scripts (copy & paste link to avoid slashdot blockage).

Re:British Court system is FAST!3. The interesting bit here is that the system used is likely to have been GNU Motion (which means the machine running linux). He even left the thing running in debug mode where it shows the rectangle where the motion was picked up.
Yes, he did use GNU motion running off a linux system.. More info about the setup on his website.

NOT SLASHDOTTED
Just wisely disallowed Slashdot as a referrer.

There most certainly is something to see here: FREE PORN!
