Great Device... Just not for gaming
The much cheaper "non-gaming" editions of this make much more sense.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...They have VESA mount points and can be mounted on the back of a monitor:
http://assets.hardwarezone.com...Sure the graphics aren't top-notch, but most people don't need that. They're great if you need a computer but don't have space for a tower (and also don't want the failure issues associated with a laptop).

Re:Uhh, phones != profit...
According to hardwarezone.com:
The iPhone 3GS does not get: Shared Photo Streams, FaceTime over cellular, 3D Flyover or turn-by-turn navigation features of the new Maps app, Panorama mode or the offline reading list feature
The same article quotes Ars Technica as saying:
Features from older iOS versions that didn't make it to the 3GS are still not present in iOS 6: these include location-based Reminders (iPhone 4 and newer), WiFi Personal Hotspot (iPhone 4 and newer), FaceTime (iPhone 4 and newer), AirPlay Mirroring (4S and newer) and Siri (iPhone 4S and newer)

Re:"a new connector to support 1.8-inch drives"
GP beat me to it. If the power connector is too big, I'd say use a smaller power connector. I mean it's nearly 3X the size of the data connector and it's usually only using 4 of those pins (photo). Or maybe they could stack the connectors on top of each other to save horizontal space, they'd be well under 1cm tall stacked.
All you'd need is a different adapter to use the small-connector drives in existing desktop PCs. Changing the data connector seems totally uncalled for. -

Re:Qt is *NOT* Gnome alternative itself
3G HSPA has already been announced for the next Maemo-based device. See http://sites.hardwarezone.com/sg/nokiazone/content/sersitiv/files/2008/09/maemo-5.jpg (This was during the Maemo Summit in Berlin, September 2008).
Though, I don't really know if a Maemo-based phone would be a good thing for the Internet Tablet. Sure, having data abilities wouldn't be a bad thing (even though the prices are still high, it's starting to come down), but "phoning" it would probably be a mistake. The problem is that when people buy a phone, they expect everything to be shiny, blinky, and worky. And well, we all know the n8x0 platform is far from polished for the consumer market. I would definitely recommend an Internet Tablet to my nerd friends, never to a dumb blonde who just wants to browse the Facespace. In that regard, I am hoping the next evolution of the Internet Tablet remains just that, and Internet Tablet, with added connectivity, for sure, but just limited so that the niche remains quite hacker-focused.

Point: Missed
A while back, AMDTi said that they were not competing at the high-end anymore: "There were also very specific admissions that AMD/ ATI isnâ(TM)t competing at the high end with Nvidia, nor do they intend to match up to the GTX 280 with a release of their own uber-chip." source. So to say "ATI had to combine two cards to be on top!" kind of completely misses the point. (emphasis added.)
For the interested, there's a great article at anandtech talking about how the R770 came to be pretty awesome... Really, though, it's not a super-high-end part. -
Lots of feeds from me

Re:Nice $300 notebook
Here is the most substantial list I've seen of specs on it. I agree with you that calling it a notebook is a stretch. At the same time, I haven't seen anything with that kind of capability at this price point, smaller or larger. I think I could easily go for the $199 model. They don't specifically mention usb in the list of features - but I would think that it would be necessary to augment the storage.

Teen, 17, first to be charged with unauthorised wireless Net access
By Chua Hian Hou
A 17-YEAR-OLD polytechnic student has become the first person here to be charged with piggybacking on someone else's wireless Internet connection.
Garyl Tan Jia Luo was accused yesterday of using a laptop computer to gain unauthorised access to a home wireless network on May 13 this year.
If convicted, Tan faces up to three years in jail and fines of up to $10,000 under Section 6(1)(a) of the Computer Misuse Act.
Tan was released on $6,000 bail and is scheduled to appear at the Subordinate Courts on Wednesday.
Court documents did not describe the circumstances in which Tan was arrested, but The Straits Times understands that a neighbour near his Casuarina Walk home had lodged a complaint against him.
While there are no statistics on how commonplace the practice of piggybacking unsecured home wireless networks is, networking firm Cisco System's spokesman, Mr Rayson Cheo, said it is probably quite widespread here.
Most modern notebook computers and personal digital assistants (PDAs) have the ability to sniff out unsecured networks and hop online for free with just a few clicks.
There are numerous guides online that describe how to do this and the low cost of wireless networking equipment means that most HDB or condominium blocks have unprotected networks users can log on to.
Said Mr Cheo: 'People assume, wrongly, that since it is there, it is okay to use it.'
Mr Aloysius Cheang, the chairman of local infocomm security association, the Special Interest Group in Security and Information Integrity, said: 'Most people probably do it because it is convenient, or because they are cheap and want free Internet.
'But, for some, it is because they want to do something illegal like defaming someone or downloading pirated MP3s, and they don't want the activities traced back to their own network.'
In the online world, there are even special terms for it, like 'wardriving' and 'Wi-Fi mooching'.
The problem, said lawyer Bryan Tan, is that while most people know that mooching is not quite legitimate, they probably do not know that it can be treated as a serious offence.
'Blinkered by the convenience and allure of ?free Internet', people don't realise that mooching is the virtual equivalent of trespassing,' he added.
Likewise, many users do not seem to realise that they can block moochers simply by installing a password on their Internet connections.
For most users, the only indication they get that someone is mooching is when their connection speed slows down, though Mr Cheo said software tools are available for download that can track who is using a network and what they are doing on it.
While the case is the first of its kind here, there have been at least two similar arrests and convictions in the United States.
In some countries like Holland, Mr Tan added, Wi-Fi network owners can even be held liable by the courts for crimes committed on their unprotected networks.

Re:Creative Players
Just a side note "soldering the wires" is not exactly what needs to be done.
I had this problem with mine and fixed it two days ago. There's actually a fairly good site http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/view.php?cid= 9&id=1331 that gives a good tutorial on getting it apart.
There's also pictures of what you need to solder in the forum related to the article. All I needed to do was heat the existing solder for a second, plus put in a little additional re-enforcement of the jack itself.
In the end it cost me $40 altogether, since I bought a new cordless iron and some decent solder that I didn't need. Considering Creative wants a $30 cheque just to look at it after the first 90 days and the receipt, if not gone completly, would be in the hands of my ex (a much higher price than $30 to try and get it, although not monetary) I got off lightly for a fix that took maybe 15 minutes. -

Lucasfilm CTO Cliff Plumer Talks Technology
Given the opening of the Letterman Digital Arts Center in San Francisco's Presidio, the new home of Lucasfilm, Industrial Light & Magic and LucasArts, along with subsequent announcements such as HP becoming Lucasfilm's preferred technology provider and ZBrush being added to the ILM pipeline, VFXWorld invited Barbara Robertson to dig a little deeper with Lucasfilm cto Cliff Plumer.
[...]
BR: Does everyone get new machines at the Presidio?
CP: They're transitioning. Our three key vendors for the desktop are HP for workstations, AMD for processors and NVIDIA for graphics. Everyone is moving toward 64-bit workstations. Most have dual heads [monitors] today. They will all have dual processors. We're working closely with AMD, our processor vendor on dual core processors. We'll get to the stage over the next year where artists will have a dual core dual processor -- two processors on one chip; like four CPUs. Plus, two graphics cards. We're looking at a workstation equivalent on the desktop that's more powerful that what we used to have with a fully blown SGI Onyx, something ILM once paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for.
Our render farm [Angstrom Microsystems(TM)] has about 3,000 processors and we have a proprietary tool that lets unused desktops become part of the render pool at night, so we can scale up to over 4,000 processors.

Lucasfilm Selects HP Technology
ASIA PACIFIC, Singapore, September 13, 2005 - HP and Lucasfilm Ltd., the leader in visual effects and sound engineering for feature films, today announced a global, three-year, multi-million dollar technology and marketing agreement.
Lucasfilm will use HP Adaptive Enterprise solutions to generate new video games, visual effects and animation. The HP technology, also being used to store and manage LucasFilm's business applications, will be deployed at Lucasfilm's new Letterman Digital Arts Center in the Presidio of San Francisco and at the company's Singapore operations.
Lucasfilm will roll out up to 1,000 high-performance HP workstations powered by Dual-Core AMD Opteron processors for the production of its visual effects and video games. The HP xw9300 Workstation environment at Lucasfilm will run both Linux and Windows XP operating environments in both 32-bit and 64-bit modes, with in-house software applications for creation and editing.

Inspiron XPS/9100
Dell already went into the gaming laptop business with their Inspiron XPS system. It's a bit pricy, so I bought myself a Inspiron 9100 (much the same realy, except for the P4EE). There's an excellent review here.

Re:How smart u are..This sounds like what AMD did with its single (XP) and SMP (MP) Athlon processors. For a long while the XP and MP chips were the same except MPs were tested for SMP performance. A certain bridge on the surface of the board was cut to make a processor into an XP (though some weren't), so connecting this bridge turned your XP into an MP chip, which was a lot more expensive. The process was simple, and you could end up with a $121 MP2000 (according to pricewatch.com) for the price of a $48 XP2000.

out of date?
While plextor was the first to release this, they are no longer the only one! Philips DVDR824P is available as well as Memorex's 8X entry.
Sony is also releasing the DRU 530A in Decemeber at about the same time as the Pioneer DVR-A07 and Cyber Drive 8X DVD+R drive.
Pretty soon we'll see 16x DVD recording speeds. -

This doesn't run on the voodoo3 since it doesn't support multitexturing.
Not true. Voodoo3 does support multitexturing. Read this.
"As Voodoo2 does, Voodoo3 supports multitexturing, single-pass trilinear filtering and emboss bump mapping."
Or this.
"Single pass multitexturing has once again been implemented on this chip. Its benefits include a much faster clock speed (143/166/183MHz over the previous 90/100MHz) and multitexturing has meant that the Voodoo3 architecture is fairly close to being a Voodoo2 SLI performer." -
Re:No SMP
I cannot comment on Xeon versus Pentium 4, but the Athlon XP and MP are decidedly not different chips. Athlon XP processors can usually run in SMP without problems, although newer ones may be locked to prevent this.
To check if your Athlon XP is locked (and to unlock it if it is), you might want to have a look at this article.
-
Re:No SMP
I will agree with you, they are not different. And the XP can run in SMP mode. However the newer versions of the XP have their L5 bridges laser cut. So you have to use some materials to unlock the SMP mode. This site used to have an article on unlocking the XP with cut bridges. basically it required filling the bridges with a non-conductive material, then spreading some sort of material over each to achieve the proper effect.
This is not a very smart thing to do as its can make your system unstable. But it can be done. -
I don't know about that...
