Re:Seems kinda like a backwards concept
Indeed; WINE seems to be a project that is very interesting, but kinda unneeded since Linux has much more acceptance now than when the project started.
More and more desktop applications appear native for the Linux platform, hence, many Windows products now have a Linux counterpart.
For what I have heard many people use/used WINE for Windows programs such as Agent and Eudora. Now with the arrival of Pan, and many GUI email clients/groupware applications in the works (for instance Evolution) many people will stop using the Windows programs, and switch to native Linux applications.
So, as time passes, WINE will probably be used less and less... -
Re:WHY does GNOME need VB compatiable scripting
Can anyone explain why GNOME would need VB compatiable scripting?
Try here for a pretty good description of their reasoning.

KDE question from ignorant, GNOME-only linux user
Uh, is there anything done for KDE which resembles Helixcode? Their autoupdater kicks ass. OTOH all those juicy KDE apps (Konqueror, KOffice, KDevelop) are starting to make me salivate.

Re:Cool...
April GNOME is not out, because we have decided to give more testing, polishing, and reviewing before the 1.2 release (April).
If you get Helix GNOME you will get a very good approximation of what GNOME 1.2 will look like.
Jacob (GNOME 1.2 release coordinator) today released GNOME 1.1.90 to the world. Go test it, and report any problems you find there.

Re:It looks alright...
I am glad you pointed this out.
Evolution is logically split into two parts (there is a process barrier between these parts).
The first are the User Interface Bonobo components. The other part is the non-graphical part that actually drives the data back end (The Wombat process, which is also in turn a Bonobo component).
The Wombat does not use or require a windowing system to be running, it just acts as a serializer and as the data provider for the actual user interface. The user interface can be a terminal application talking to the Wombat trough CORBA, a Web-based mailer/calendar/addressbook, a custom application you wrote that uses any of the above services in Perl (using the Perl/CORBA bindings from Owen Taylor for instance) or an Emacs based interface.
A lot of love has gone into making Evolution "right" in as many aspects as possible.
We welcome more comments on it, and constructive cricitism.

Re:Read the damn thing first. Two words: HELIX GNOME
Helix Gnome comes with a nifty little update tool that queries a server on the internet to give you a list of what GNOME packages are out there more recent that what exists on your RPM-based Linux box. You can then select which package(s) you'd like to download and install. Press a button and the rest is automatic. How does this affect Microsoft's newest innovation^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hpatent?

Re:What's Evolution?
Evolution is the new Outlook-killer, part of the groupware suite that Helix Code is developing.

Evolution -- next generation email client and PIM
Evolution is the GNOME email, calendar, and contact manager. Think of it as Outlook on Linux and on steroids, and you'll get the idea. Check out the Evolution page at Helix Code for details.

Clarification on Evolution Client/ServerThere seems to be a bit of confusion on exactly what Evolution is. Evolution is the mailer, contact manager, and calendar, and in general it will be able to be used to store and share many types of information; Evolution is much more than just an Outlook-like client. It's also a server, which can indeed replace Exchange. The mailing backend is Camel, and there is a Calendar backend as well.
In summary, Evolution will be a general solution for information-sharing, first with the mail, calendar, and contact sharing mechanism, but also providing a framework for developing and extending this to other applications. You'll be able to see the Evolution server at work when the Gnome hackers set up the gnome.org Evolution server which will contain all the gnome hackers' contact information.

Re:Can't keep a copy of QuickTime 4
Interesting take on the installation
:). More likely than Apple open-sourcing Quicktime would be Apple releasing a binary-only version for Unix/Linux. Because of all of the "intellectual property" involved in the codecs Quicktime uses, source to the codecs probably will never show up.
The installation program probably wouldn't be too hard to port, anyway. The HelixCode version of GNOME has an installation program that pulls down RPMs and installs them. I believe the source is available, too - Apple could probably just "borrow" it. Installing from machines on an outside internet connection is as easy as `lynx -source http://address-to-script/script.sh | sh`.
The installation program is probably the last of their worries in a binary only release - 2D X acceleration and direct hardware access is probably where they'd focus their efforts. Only then would they decide what information they wanted from your boxen ;-).

Re:I agree, it's the new standardTake a look at the commercial distributions and you'll find a nearly unanimous standardization on KDE - with RedHat being the obvious exception, of course, and Corel leading the charge.
I don't quite see this "unanimous standardization" that you are referring to. Redhat and TurboLinux both offer Gnome as the default desktop. Mandrake, OpenLinux, and Corel Linux offer KDE as the default. Most distributions offer both as desktop choices.
Like it or not, while the Linux community is doing the parallel development thing, in the Linux industry, the race is pretty much over.
Far from it. I can name 3 companies devoting many manhours and cash to Gnome development: RHAD Labs, Eazel, and Helix Code. Companies such as MandrakeSoft and Corel are funding KDE development. The race, if anything, is just beginning to get interesting...
Yeah, I know about Eazel. Judging by the amount of hype they've generated, all I can say about them is: show me the code.
okay:
here is some of it.

Re:KDE 2.0 looks gorgeousI predict KDE 2 will probably signal the beginning of the end of the GNOME/KDE struggle - its been fun, but KDE appears to be keeping one generation ahead, and is certainly better looking.
Your prediction will most certainly fail. Watch and see. Perhaps what you are overlooking is that different users prefer different things. I will grant you that KDE is more advanced than Gnome in some areas, primarly in the number of applications they have available. However, many developers prefer hacking in the Gnome environment much better than that KDE environment. And Gnome is doing things now that KDE can't do or hasn't yet. Both environments have their strengths. I can also think of at least 3 companies that are putting extensive amounts of money and manhours into improving Gnome (RHAD Labs, Eazel, and Helix Code). These companies aren't going to just drop their work on Gnome once KDE 2 comes out. You also say that KDE "looks" better. Let me remind you that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I personally find KDE to be hideous compared to Gnome. This is not a bash-KDE comment. Honestly, I love what KDE is doing. I keep up with the KDE development news, love looking at new screenshots, reading about KOffice and other such projects, and wish them all the luck. And I think the competition between Gnome and KDE is healthy. Neither community is going away anytime soon. I can assure you of that.

Re:KDE Office ?
The HelixCode chaps are writing something called Evolution which may go some way to solving your particular problems. From a look'n'feel point of view, it seems to be heavily inspired by Outlook 2000, and from reading the brief description at the above URL, it seems as though will have similar functionality. It's not clear it will support the (admittedly good) calendar/scheduling functionality as Outlook 2000, but I would guess that couldn't be too far away.
Ofcourse, this is for Gnome, rather than KDE, but i'm sure that chunks of it will be reusable by the KDE developers, or, at least, it should provide the push to get similar functionality under KDE (or is it already there?).

Re:Why not Debian packages?
Yes, I've been working on debs for a little while. You can see the status of my efforts at:
http://primates.helixcode.com/~peter/
My time has lately been taken up with other issues related to this release, but the Debian packages are a high priority for me now.
It's unfortunate that you guys can't read our FAQ due to the Slashdotting.. It's one of the questions answered there. :)

Slashdotted...Okay, the site was running reeeeally slow... here is a copy of the front page and also of http://www.helixcode.com/desktop/:
Front page:
Helix Code Rocks. Helix Code is an open source software company devoted to improving GNOME , the leading desktop environment for Linux. We want to make GNOME the best desktop on the planet, and make it available to everyone.
GNOME is a complete desktop environment, providing everything from the nuts and bolts to the large-scale productivity applications upon which businesses and individuals rely daily. GNOME is here to make the desktop free. Helix Code is here to make GNOME better.
We believe that software should be humanizing. Using a computer should be about what you want, not what your computer needs. Only four percent of the world's population has chosen a desktop environment. That leaves a lot of room for GNOME.
Seriously. Our first task is the Helix GNOME Desktop: all of the GNOME software, tested, packaged and ready to install into your existing Linux or Unix system. The Helix Code desktop team works hard to keep its GNOME packages up-to-date, stable and reliable. Helix Code is providing Helix GNOME as a service to the GNOME community, which can count on always having updated, stable packages for its users and developers.
In fact, we've just released our March preview of the Helix GNOME desktop. Why not have a look?
To go with that, Helix Code is building a full suite of productivity applications, starting with Evolution and Gnumeric.
Evolution is a groupware package that serves as your personal mailer, calendar and addressbook. From the ground up, Evolution is designed for today's Internet user, easily tracking contacts, scheduling appointments and managing mail on a global scale. And Evolution is built for modern communication needs, interoperating with existing groupware applications and effortlessly handling gargantuan mail loads.

Helix Code is the company name
From www.helixcode.com (when it is not
/.-ed):
Helix Code is an open source software company devoted to improving GNOME, the leading desktop environment for Linux.
Their product, as fas as I can tell, is called Helix GNOME installer. It's GPL-ed, and you can download the source from their ftp site (which is not yet /.-ed, as of this writing). -
Re:The future of *nix DesktopsGNOME seems like it is playing catchup because the teams did not work in the same track. KDE quickly finished their panel to look like CDE, finished. GNOME refined and tweaked it so (by now) it 1) looks beautiful 2) acts like a next-generation Dock.
With the extra time, KDE developers developed their KOffice suite. GNOME's core developers (actually, mostly Miguel) developed Gnumeric (very Excel-like) as a sample application for others to mimic and integrate other Office apps.
Gnumeric is very Excel-like for a good reason: like-it-or-not, businesses nowadays rely on Excel/Word/Powerpoint. If you provide a good and similar alternative on Linux/*BSD, it is more likely that they will switch.
This sample app -> mimic approach didn't work quite how it was expected. Gnumeric is hailed, but there are no other major apps (word processor, presentation creator, personal information manager) that mimic its level of functionality and integration with GNOME. (AbiWord for GNOME is pretty GNOME-like, but it doesn't integrate like Gnumeric does.) This is why Miguel and Nat created Helix Code. While they will still pretty much control the core libraries and such, they will focus on developing these other applications. They are currently working on Evolution (couldn't find an URL at the moment), an extensive personal information manager which will combine the functions of Balsa, GnomeCard, GnomePilot and others into one Outlook-like functional product. Their main goal is to develop desktop apps for GNOME.
To finally answer your question, I'm not even sure that GNOME is ready for the business environment yet, but don't dismiss it as a "wannabe" or "johnny-come-lately". GNOME's core architecture seems to have many advantages over KDE, so we'll see what comes down the pipe.

Nooo! Not VBA!
Scroll down to the bottom. Apparently under the guise of Excel compatibility this spawn of Microsoft (Bill Gates got started with BASIC, wants everyone to use it) will soon infest Linux!
Actually, shudder as I might over the thought, it rationally is a pretty good idea. If anyone is interested the authors are Jody Goldberg and Michael Meeks. The mailing list is gb@helixcode.com.
Cheers,
Ben -
Re:Gnome email client?
Miguel and Nat's Helix Code company is hiring about 16 people (in addition to Nat and Miguel) to write an Outlook clone called Evolution, and they've already been working on it for several months. Since there are so many hackers on it it should certainly end up being finished and be pretty cool.

Re:Worries about underpowered graphic tools
The vision of the Helix Setup Tools is tightly integrated with our vision of component-based programming and interface/contract-based programming.
The whole vision of GNOME is to enable a level of scripting that has never been available before. If you are interested in the technical details that address your concerns you can read the Helix Setup Tools white paper (http://primates.helixcode.com/~miguel/helix-setup -tools.html) and if you are interested in our approach to component programming and how we think these things should fit, look at http://primates.helixcode.com/~miguel/bongo-bong.h tml. And finally, if you are hooked into an object name space and service location you might be interested in the Moniker white paper (http://primates.helixcode.com/~miguel/monikers.ht ml).
Best wishes,
Miguel. -
