Re:And the US state after the same amount of time?
The former USSR nations are not doing great, but most have NOT yet slipped as low as the past of the US of A
Oh, really? They followed right along with the defacto USSR enslavement practices. Selective memory perhaps?

Helpful hint
For those who have two attached mice (or a mouse and trackball) you can use this utility to quickly swap the mouse buttons without hitting the control panel:

Re:Not Just Laptops
I had great success with athcool (http://members.jcom.home.ne.jp/jacobi/linux/soft
w ares.html, but it is also included in many distributions) on my Athlon 1800 XP+ desktop system. The temperature of my processor did go down from 65C to 45C which also indicates a great amount of saved power.
So if you use an Athlon or Duron system I suggest to give this tool a try.

Re:hats off to Bram, Bill Joy, and ATT
You should try the GUI version of vim (gvim), if only because it's much easier to set the looks of the editor (colors/font combination); when i'm in a GUI session i always use gvim with the darkblue colorscheme, which i find very easy on my eyes.
Anyway, gvim, besides some icons and gui filedialogs, works exactly the same as the regular vim. It's all about comfort :) -
Not that uselss - why not try it yourself?heya,
Hmm, in reply to all those who claim that you don't learn anything, and that you're just following instructions, and who recommend Gentoo, how about putting your money where your mouth is and building it yourself? (and pasting the proof here, which will usually take the form of "oh fsck this......how do i fix this?")
Take it from me, when you've stayed up to 2am trying to figure out why this fsck-ing package won't install, and why you keep getting "Error 1:...blah blah", then when you finally figure out why, it tends to stick in your head.
Sure, if you copy and paste everything from the single-html file, you won't learn much - the learning comes from actually *reading* the document instead of mindlessly pasting/copying, and skimming through the mailing lists, to see why they chose to do things a certain way, and hanging on the IRC channel.
The BLFS which follows afterwards is also definitely recommended - in fact, I often use it as a hints guide to installing stuff on top of my normal distro (Slack)...(not for my WinXP box..lol)
Also, using something like checkinstall or paco is recommended - and there's also cpucaps is also useful (link at end).
cya,
Victor

Re:Genese, SNES games $70Thanks for the constructive feedback.
I've noticed that certain browsers do wonky things when you hover over the various DIVs on the page. I've reviewed my code on numerous occasions, and I'm reasonably certain that this isn't a code problem--it's a browser problem. There's nothing in the code to tell the browser to do wonky things to the div background on a mouseover.
As you're clearly upset by websites that open new browser windows, I recommend trying a browser called Mozilla Firefox, an excellent, open-source web browser that makes it trivially easy to stop links from opening automatically in new windows once and for all. Of course, Firefox is one of the browsers that has the "blue background" bug I mentioned earlier, but I'm hopeful that they'll hash that out before too long.
As for the need to scroll down to see the navigation buttons on magicchopstick.com, that's a fair enough complaint--but I'm not gonna fix it. Neener neener.

Re: Faster processors...I think you should revise your thoughts about mighty Intel. They just suck when it comes to power consumption and they always did. P4 always been power hungry CPU, approximativly 10 to 20% more than AMD for similar performance.
You can refer to recent story on Slashdot Particuly Anandtech comparison. If you want to compare performance : AnandTech (same article) or ExtremeTech.
So don't think Intel had any interest in low power consuption, they were for the gagihertz race. Now tings are changing, they canceled everything (think of 4Ghz) to work "around" the CPU. They surrender to AMD. Race for Gigahertz is over. Dual core is the way to go, particularly specialysed ones.
If you want to reduce your CPU temperature about 20deg C try Athcool on GNU/Linux. It shuts down northbridge went idle. Obviously, you lose 5% performance, but it's your choice. It can be activated at will!
By the way, I'm talking about desktop.

IBM Model M Space Saver is what you want. But they're worth their weight in gold, and they weigh a ton.

Re:TAA (This Ain't Astroturf)
Up until last week, my Athlon XP machine sounded like a vacuum cleaner.
Me too.
I got I2C sensor support compiled into my kernel and watched as my CPU temp varied from 65 to 80 degrees Celsius (as I taxed my processor).
Yup, me too.
Modern CPUs have a HLT instruction, which basically tells the CPU to have a rest and cool down when it doesn't need to do anything (idling, waiting for data from a hard drive, whatever).
The trouble is, Athlon XPs take no notice of this instruction as long as the CPU is paying attention to the PCI bus (or something, can't quite remember the details). So you need to set Athlons up specially if you want them to run as cool as they should.
There's a tool called Athcool which does this for you. For more information, read the Athlon Powersaving HOWTO.
Since fixing this issue, I went from 72 degrees idling / 85 degrees max, down to 48 degrees idling / 80 degrees max.

Re:Transformers and OGG
i have an ancient transformers song up at mutagene.net. it's quite dated, the melody has nothing to do with the transformers, but you might enjoy it for the cheesy Omnicron/Megatron/Starscream interplay anyway. sorry it's an mp3, but it was made in 1996/7...
