Fry my brains thank you
BPL has already been rejected in Japan and Austria, yet the PRO BPL lobby seem never to stop and in fact don't seem to care if it causes massive interference to HF as they view it as "OLD" technology. Well all you Pro BPL lobbyists out there, what will happen when the Satellite Network is knocked out by a meteor storm or severe solar storm, what will happen when the Internet is so full of Spam, Pirated Software (Warez), Pirated DVD's and CD's, Pornography, and streaming Audio and Video that the Net slows down to a crawl and an email takes longer than a conventional written letter to get to its destination. I''ll tell you what will happen, HF will be needed to get world-wide communications back on track quickly. The people who propose BPL have no idea about HF, don't care about HF and think Drake is a duck, Kenwood make toasters and Sony only makes MP3 players with Heavy Double Bass Boost... Stop BPL over Power Lines Information Page
Shit if I wasn't running off to work I would ramble on as I always do... -
Re:Haven't had it long, have you?By then your laptop will be gone.
I don't think this is necessarily true. My day to day laptop is over five years old, and it's still performing as snappily ( Disclaimer: 166Mhz processors weren't really that snappy back in 1998 either ) as it ever was.
Here in the office, we also have all kinds of ancient laptops which are kept around for one legacy reason or another, and they're usually retired because we don't have a need for them anymore, not because of unit failure. Perhaps laptops are made more shoddily today. I sure hope not, because I'm hoping to buy a Powerbook in the next month or so.
I don't really know if anyone buys laptops expecting the same things you do from a PC ( the incremental upgrade path, etc ). Laptops are expensive, but for that price, you get mobility, which is very valuble to some. If you travel a lot for work, have a long public transport commute ( like me ), need computers in awkward situations ( e.g. for attaching to a router console in the top point in a rack ) or don't have much living space, the lack of upgrade potential is a non issue. If you're not a gamer, all you'll want to upgrade anyway once you reach optimal performance point is memory and hard drive space - both of which are usually accessible on a Laptop.
I would never buy desktop computers preferentially to laptops if cost wasn't such a hamstringing issue, particularly as newer laptops with DVI-outs or equivalent and USB/PS2 keyboards and mice make a functionally drop-in desktop replacement.

There is plenty of good competition for telstra
But maybe the competition don't spend as much on marketing. I find that bigpond is taken up by people who don't do any research of their own about the best ISP for them.
On the other hand Telstra is still choking the broadband adsl market all by itself. It is getting more difficult for it to get away with that. Everyone has to go thru Telstra one way or another for ADSL, but nearly every other ISP still manages to offer a better deal and better service even though they have to purchase thru Telstra. Except the ISPs with worse management than Telstra.
When my friends ask me who to sign up with I won't let them sign up with Telstra. Or Optus.
Look for the geeks running ISPs, who have just enough sense to hire a business manager to make sure they cover their costs. These guys aren't solely profit motivated, they have a great understanding of the technology and always keep up. Stay clear of the corporate monsters, or entrepreneur types, who don't care about anything except separating customers from their money. Service? what is that?.
My current favourite is internode.com.au. I also like adam.com.au although they're adelaide based. I like Goldweb in Canberra. iinet.com.au and ihug.com.au seem to be ok but I'd need to check a bit more. ihug seems a little secretive but iinet have the right kind of history. And yes I've been burned by isp mergers like dynamite.com.au -> eisa -> austar, thats why you have to steer clear of the entrepreneurs. -
Utter bollox
My electricity supply is "always on", that doesn't mean I should be charged the same if I leave all my appliances on all day as someone who doesn't.
If people using more than a gig a day are in a minority then it is they who should have to request special pricing from an ISP. There's no reason a majority of people who fit in some 'normal usage' bracket should subsidise extreme users by default.
To me it makes sense for an ISP to offer a broad range of pricing options to consumers but if an ISP wants to go down the "one size fits all" route then it makes sense for the size and cost to fit the majority of users. -
Re:No news for me...
The overall monthly cost of broadband here doesn't seem to be prohibitively more expensive here than non-broadband internet. I pay $79.95 a month for a 4 gig plan. Previously I was paying $35 a month plus phone costs for unlimited dial up.
Overall I think I get quite a good deal. I have a static IP so I can run my own little web server without hassle. My ISP runs some gaming servers that don't count towards the bandwidth limit and also host copies of Linux ISOs. Only incoming data counts towards the limit (the ISP says they may have a word in extreme cases).
The 4 gig limit is certainly reachable if you consume a lot of "heavy" media. But even then there's enough to download several hours of video a month and have plenty left for general use. If I hit the limit then I get charged 11c a meg which isn't bad if you just use it for mail and web browsing for the rest of the month.
You are right that high bandwidth applications will become more prevelant over time. Hopefully this will be tempered with new technology (eg improved codecs shrinking video further) as well as bandwidth costs being driven down.
Over all the broadband market in Australia seems quite healthy to me. There seems to be enough players to avert a monopoly situation and with ISPs like the one I use offering contract free broadband hopefully there will be enough fluidity to keep competition strong. -
Cyberpunk and Free software
Possibly more noise, however I was curious that the interview involves discussions on cyberpunk and free software, it is a topic which I attempted to research and write about for an undergrad postmodernism class. Taking artificial intelligence networks as a metaphor for ownership of information I tried to argue that history should be openly intact in "code" and that literature is interpreted through collaboration, a groove between writers and readers like a customisable interface. I've uploaded my article , if it is interesting at all please e-mail me, I haven't found much on this topic so far.

affordable satellite links
Actually, satellite links are just about the most affordable form of broardband available outside Sydney, Melbourne & Brisbane. Telstra cable is way too much, and Optus hasn't cabled anywhere else, but you can get sattelite access for around $40-$50 a month.
Of course, sattelite internet is actually a pretty crap form of 'net access - it is high lag, ties up a phone line, and is only fast one way.

Re:Wow.
Check it out here.
I haven't tried it yet, but it looks pretty cool.

Re:Sierra: Port the old games!!
Port what? The old games were interpreted. There's a linux interpreter called Sarien here
-
Let us get the old AGI games!
I don't care about all this new stuff. I want
the old AGI games. I would like to play all
these on my linuxbox if I had all my old disks.
And there is an interprenter for linux:
Sarien
(It just chokes on the cracked Goldrush i tried
instead of my broken 5 1/4 inch disk)
