Re:A false sense of securityisnt there a movie where the inmates where a RFID around their neck that explodes if they tamper with it / go to far away from the facility?
I think you're talking about Battle Royale. All of the "inmates" are kids who are taken against their will to an island. Brilliant film, go rent a copy.

Re:Even Ebert acknowledges we may see SW 7-9 ...
Oh come on! You guys aren't thinking right!
Let's see. Is there any director who is:
1. Still alive
2. A big name director (can push thru major league bucks, scriptors, and command the first stringers at Industrial Light and Magic)
3. Has a track record for awesome action movies.
4. Has a track record for awesome Science Fiction Action Movies.
5. Knows what engaging dialogue is.
6. Is not from that terrible Planet of the Speilberg.
7. Has a movie total gross national product roughly equal to Lucas'.
Mmmmmm...is there? Mmmmmm... -
Re:I would guess...
The chinese definitely want to be certain that their software is not compromised. I too have heard about a proprietary fork of Linux being developed for governmental use.
The US government has taken it upon itself to depose governments it deems opposed to its own "ideals". China realizes that it falls into that category. They're looking to protect their infrastructure in two ways; first by preventing media from re-educating its youth - aka censorship. They know that's a losing battle. You can't win when the other guy offers drugs and porn on demand (the other guys would be us). Second, they're trying to preserve the integrity of their grid by obscuring its protocols.
that's a double edged sword. In my estimation, the reason the money guys have always had a problem as far as coding goes is that, for the most part, THEY CAN'T READ CODE. So even with your most loyal engineers, you ASSUME loyalty, because the bureaucrats and venture capitalists can't assure it for themselves. This is a huge hole in the CODE FOR THYSELF strategy. The coders REALLY HAVE ALL THE POWER. This leaves room for backdoors-for-hire... lots of black market cash to be made, etc... Imagine Mao telling scribes what he wanted in The Little Red Book, himself being unable to read or write. *shrugs*
(I think it's an interesting time for coding in general, because I tend to think of coders as this new underclass (undervalued by virtue of the fact that there are so many of them across regions with differing monetary systems), but literate (and thus possessing an information processing and storing advantage) to a degree that by and large supercedes the general population. Imagine the world after someone writes the Little Binary Book? Imagine, virtual populace, virtual governments - people don't tend plots of land, they tend lines of code - But I digress... )
But other than that, it makes good sense from China's perspective to eliminate the effect the United States has on its own populace and infrastructure. Increased US influence can only erode the Chinese power system; as such it should be feared and otherwise rallied against. So if I were the Chinese, I'd want Microsoft off my servers and clients too. In fact I'd want them out of my country. Nor would I want Google. Really... especially Google. Every time I think of Google these days, I think of the movie PI (by Darren Aronofsky - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0138704/). The protagonist searched for a pattern in PI, and for a pattern in the stock market, which... all coincided with the pattern for God. Anyway, I can imagine that Google has its hands on a bundle of patterns these days. Again, I digress.
That said, you can find almost any movie on the street for like a buck. That alone would have Mao turning in his grave. -
Neverwhere *is* a series.
Neverwhere was made into a miniseries. Six episodes, with reportedly horrible acting. I have it, but never got around to watching it.
Bah, if they did anything really good SF or fantasy, they'd make another "I, Robot" or "LXG" out of it.

Re:Even Ebert acknowledges we may see SW 7-9 ...I'd go for that, but then all the Stormtroopers would be Red. The New Jedi Order would only carry blue lightsabers, and characters would die only to return and die again.
Takashi Miike gets my vote, but I'd pretty much take anyone over Mad King George. Including Albert Pyun
Wait scratch that. If they let Uwe Boll get anywhere near SW I'll have to go out and buy myself a highpowered rifle.

Upcoming projects.
They're making His Dark Materials into a movie. Haven't read the book, but I was told it's sorta like a secular humanist version of Narnia. And there's Narnia itself.
But, well, that's fantasy. There's A Scanner Darkly .
But none of that looks like it could spawn a real franchise. Damn You, Fox!!! Now Firefly will be, at best, a decent movie trilogy. Imagine what Babylon 5 would have been squeezed into seven and a half hours. Bah.

GNAA exposes the dangers of hiring Latvians
Impi - Associated Press, South AfricaGNAA's wish at expressing its displeasure at the re-election of the American lap dog Tony Blair embarked on a plan to demonstrate its frustration to the world.

Timecop, blessings be upon him, approached our Latvian charter and recruited Areems for this glorious endeavour. Areems has a history of failure and extreme uselessness; this was his chance to show the GNAA and the world that he was capable of great things.
Unfortunately he could only find a fake hand grenade which was discarded in his bedroom after a webcam orgy session with fellow nigger bedpan.
It is with immense humility that we apologies to all our brothers across the world for the destruction of a flower pot. Areems will be summarily executed and Latvia flushed.

Re:The Office?
I had a similar problem with Sweet Sixteen, I couldn't understand a word without the subtitles. I believe the accents are Glasgow-based.
I'm from more London diretion than Scotland :) -
Re:The Office?
The gold standard of impenetrable regional accents on UK television must be Rab C. Nesbitt - one of the funniest things ever on television courtesy of the BBC. [if you can understand it].
I'm a Glaswegian-born lad so no problems for me, but English and US friends of mine have watched it and not understood a word.

Why link desktop and web searches?I can't really see much point in integrating desktop searching with 'web' searching. For instance, if I'm looking for files on my local drive that contain the words 'weekend' and/or 'beach,' I don't really want results linking me to this or, worse yet, this.
What I would really like to see on my lone Windows machine is something like:
C:\> find
./ -type f -exec egrep "weekend|beach" {} \; -print -

Re:This is impressive
On the one hand, you have a point. People came down harder on Microsoft than was justified by the quite reasonable specs they announced, with the system setup that looked pretty darned good.
On the other hand, that special was in many ways just plain insulting. It really gave The Wizard a run for it's money. Lucas would be proud.
It looks like neither of the two (Sorry Nintendo) major players have slipped up. Both are using sleek 'n sexy wireless controllers that may actually justify the cost of 1st party controllers. They both have detachable HDD options (remember kiddies, so did the PS2 and look where that went). Microsoft sensibly put their memory card ports back onto their machines, and Sony now appears to be supporting actual real memory cards. The PS3 also happens to look lickably good, whereas the Microsoft console looks much better than the Xbox (though kind of resembles a blob of ice cream).
On the other hands, both systems have achilles heels. They both are going to be a pain to develop for, what with multiple memory speeds, multiple processors, etc etc. One word: ouch. The 360 has all sorts of "Live" functionality requirements that will drive development costs up a bit, but more than that will drive developers up walls. The PS3's 8 processors-on-a-die looks like it's going to continue the PS2's legendary ease-of-programming and development [/scarcasm]. Backwards compatibility of the PS3 is a good trend, though it probably won't make or break the system. And not that I'm partial or anything, but I really wish the cameras had come standard with the consoles. It has to come standard if it's going to get used.
It looks like both systems are pretty easily matched. I eagerly await Nintendo's announcement.
Full Disclosure - I'll probably buy a PS3. If it comes out in a year and a half, that will be about the time that my latest PS2 craps out.

With the Tapis Plan, we go to eleven. You see, these CMEs come along, and the scale these other blokes use only goes to 9. So, at 9, they're all the way up - all the way. Where can you go from there? Nowhere. So what we do, if we need that extra push into the lower ionosphere, Eleven.
With apologies to the gang.

Re:Pr0n example
Compare that to a multi-million dollar budget needed for a top (non-pr0n) movie and you've got a pretty different deal there.
Maybe that says more about the efficiency of the non-pr0n movie industry than anything else.
I find it strange that Hollywood needs big budgets to put colored dots on a screen. Some of my favourite movies cost next to nothing to make. e.g. Aardman animation's The Wrong Trousers was basically a one man operation, every bit as entertaining as the big budget movies and better than the later Chicken Run from the same company but with a much bigger budget.
Hollywood needs some price discipline, they have excess money basically because of broken IP law. They're using that big money as much for market manipulation as for producing quality product.

90% of modern marketing is nothing more than an arms race and so purely parasitic.

Re:Pr0n==cheap
Same reason you get fined $1000 for littering on the highway. It's not that your litter costs $1000 to clean up (more like $0.10), it's that you have to pay for the 10,000 other people who littered and didn't get caught.
With actors, sure, if you hit it big you make lots of money. But for every Brad Pitt there are 10,000 Nic Wegener's. It's not really fair, but for now it's the best we've got. At least we've got the freedom to choose whether to hack code for a decent living or to risk it all trying to be the next Will Smith.

Or maybe......
Or maybe it is stuck in fine, granular and very dry sand which would perhaps be even worse than wet sand.
Every time you try to move, the sand is quickly displaced so the vehicle stays put.
Its a shame they can't use the trick from Ice cold in Alex where they put it in reverse (lowest gear) and move it using the starting handle as not to displace the sand too quickly.
Of course, this would rely on:
A) Opportunity having a starting handle.
B) A friendly passing Martian offering to wind it. -

Re:HonestyI still think it's doubtful that MoG even found the correct PJ. A Google search a couple of minutes ago showed:
- a number of entries about Groklaw
- a link to a list of speeches by Pamela Jones Harbour (an FTC Commissioner)
- an ASCII Resume Sample that may not even relate to a real person, let alone PJ
- a link to an Australian craft site that shows Pamela Jones publishes cross stitch and needlepoint designs.
- Pamela Jones, nutrition consultant, in Tring, Hertfordshire, England
- Pamela Jones, photographer, in Florida
- Pamela Jones, cruise reviewer.
And then there's three PJ's listed on IMDB:
- Pamela Jones, actress
- Pamela Jones, post audio assistant
- Pamela Jones, craft service assistant
God, that girl's busy... No wonder she doesn't have time for interviews...
Kidding aside, I agree with you - it's a huge violation of ethics, and not just because she supposedly tracked down PJ's mom and brother. I don't think MoG did a credible job of tracking down the PJ of Groklaw fame, and if not, she's published damaging statements about people completely unrelated to the real PJ.

Re:George Lucas

Re:George Lucas's wealth
When Lucas could have made anything, he went on to make Revenge Of The Sith...
Spielberg's filmography http://imdb.com/name/nm0000229/ isn't exactly chock full of critical successes either. He's got a few holocaust projects to his credit but, outside of Jaws and, possibly ET, that's it. I like Sugarland Express. He's got a thing the 2ww, though, check out those credits on Medal Of Honour.
The only other people that I can immediately think of who do this sort of thing is Clint Eastwood and John Sayles. Once Eastwood had made his millions, he went on to make White Hunter, Black Heart, Bird and a few other non-commercial films. Although, looking again at his filmography, I don't think this is strictly true.
John Sayles is a better case - he writes films such as Jurassic IV - then uses it to finance films such as Lone Star and Passion Fish. But John Sayles, in his directorial persona, is strictly indy.
Come to think about it, you're barking up the wrong tree. Nobody in Hollywood does the sort of thing you say. Even Hitchcock in his day was always fighting to make his movies, and you'd a thought *there* was someone who made a banker. Carte blanche work is as rare as hen's teeth - purely because the more money you make, the more money you're expected to make, which automatically kicks in with a dampner on the risk factor. Peter Jackson has fashioned for himself a gilded cage. He's won the pinball game, is guaranteed a shot at a next movie however expectations are raised, and risk will be lessened. I guarantee that Jackson's next film will tank in some manner.
