About 20 years ago I exchanged some newsgroup postings with someone who "spelunked" some mysterious site in Colorado which had 3 silos (filled with water) that sounded just like a Titan I site. I couldn't tell which site it was.

There's a Titan II site open to the public, the Titan Missile Museum in Arizona . But those sites only had one silo instead of 3, and there's only one (smaller) domed area without the separate power house.

How long before people start having a backlash against LOTRs?

It's already started. No Oscars for the cast, and pretty much everyone I've spoken to thinks the third was a huge anticlimax - by the time it finally ends, you're past caring. Same thing happened with the Matrix sequels. Movie trilogies work when they're spread over years, like the original Star Wars, but not when they're forced together.

The movies were OK... but in 20 years time they'll be remade and everyone will have forgotten Jackson's version... Don't believe me? It happened before.

But the fact that there's a Dr. Susan Calvin character implies that the movie follows Asimov's stories at least a little.

Yeah, and she's gonna be played by Bridget Moynahan That alone tells me they don't give a shit about the book.

You can often do better than Google's web search for specialized searches. Froogle or Yahoo! Shopping works better for finding products. Google News works better for finding news articles. IMDB is better for movie reviews and information. CiteSeer is better for finding CS research papers.

While someone may eventually beat Google for general web search, it's these niche searches that offer a lot of easy opportunity. Because Google is a general purpose search engine, it's not too hard to beat it in a specific topic areas.

I would say that NASA (and everybody else) has always had a single planet focus. Doing a quick scan of the Planetary Exploration Timeline at NASA shows two other probes with two planets visited: Pioneer 11 and Mariner 10; a planet and sun combo: Ulysses; and then a sprinkling seven or eight planet and comet or comet and comet probes. All the rest (around 200?) are single target missions. (It's early, my counts may be off.)

The thing about the Voyager missions is there was a window in 1977 where the gas giants would line up for the Grand Tour--where we could use the gravity assist from one planet to get to the next in a reasonable amount of time. Now, this only happens every 175 years, so I doubt I'll be around to see the next Grand Tour mission. So

However, like most grand tours, the Voyager missions did suffer from the "If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium" syndrome of taking some pictures and quickly moving on to the next destination. Most of the probes nowadays are more like picking a beach and spending your entire summer vacation there, so you have enough time to become familiar with the locale. (Or, to use the correct terminology, a flyby mission versus an orbiter mission.)

So do niggers when they're chained together and weighed down with cannonballs.

I laughed when I saw that scene in Amistad. It was the feel-good comedy of 1997!
