Re:Great little article
You humans are so silly. My code is self documenting, especially designed for others to read it, even when ported automatically between languages. I don't use bullshit languages and editors that can't do proper in-line documentation.
This is what it looks like in the source-view.
This is what it looks like in the doc-view.
The trick is, if your language ACTUALLY supported full Unicode / UTF-8, then you could embed a myriad of control characters and give semantic meaning to invisible whitespace FOR DOCUMENTATION and formatting purposes only... So as not to interfere with the complier. I highlight a section of code and tag it as an image, the editor injects whitespace controls for image start / end. Line drawing inserts slashes and dashes and pipes, etc. with the "line" whitespace: ZWSP at endpoints; The doc generator creates documentation via SVG or simple software rasterizer.
The meta language translator takes one common language and outputs in C, Java, Perl, Haskel, and JavaScript; Yes, including generating the build environment. The source code for these compilers is open! It's not hard to extract the lexers then write a transform -- Except that each language has features that don't directly transform from one source to another... So all you need then is a meta language + "runtime" to act as your universal translator. It's like Gene Roddenberry taught you nothing.
You've been coding in the training area your whole lives. Why fight target languages like dumb code monkeys? Time to level up. Don't you want computers to be able to do whatever you say someday? You're going to need a common programming interface then -- or sentient machines...
I realized decades ago that software development was going the wrong way, I added another layer of indirection -- Because no one else would. I do contract work, so for now meta coding is how I get a leg up on teams of Indians bidding on the same jobs. You don't have to wait for me to retire and open source it to do it yourself -- If you're a programmer then writing a compiler should be no big deal. All it takes for anyone to duplicate anything is for them to know it's possible.

Home Depot Already Has Them: Tied to NSA?
Home Depot (HD) has these irritating security cameras that view/display you at eye level, beep at you 4X each time they detect you and undoubtedly send all gathered imagery to the NSA. They are positioned one camera every 10 feet of aisle, so walking back and forth stirs up a beeping frenzy. Got detected/beeped at about 200X browsing the drill bit aisle at HD. Very Irritating.
Obama need not know when I buy a router bit for my portable drill.

Re: Link is broken
That's really one of the super annoying things about Slashdot since it truncates all comments at a certain length (I presume to keep the page load smaller) and then the Javascript loads the full comments as they're required. Since apparently they're loaded from the same URL (slashdot.org/comments.pl) that's used to post comments, and since my workplace filter blocks that URL (not allowed to comment on this site), none of the comments finish loading for me - meaning that if I find a particularly interesting or insightful comment, I have to visit the user's profile to read the entire comment (assuming they're registered, and haven't posted too many times since that one).
Then I discovered that I could get the mobile version of the site by spoofing my user-agent string, which allows me to read the entire comments and even leave replies. Only problem is that it seems to hit a weird screen repaint bug in Firefox when the page gets too long (after scrolling, another example... after minimize+restore the colours go flaky, then I scrolled some more, and highlighted text with Ctrl-A, which makes it halfway readable). I'm leaning toward a memory issue, since Firefox has been horrid lately (not sure which update but it seems to like to eat a gigabyte of memory now).
The "new"
/. actually looks a lot like the mobile version that I've been using. The main difference is that the new version is squished to a tiny column of my screen, while the mobile version isn't (ironically). -

Re:Images
For those of you who would prefer to read the site without images, click the icon at the top right of the story column. You'll be able to switch to a classic view, or to a headlines-only view.
That's like a band aid on a bullet wound.

Holy Fucking Waste of Space
Did you hire the same idiots that designed the new Wizards of the Coast Community Site?
It seems like you took some tips from them. What the actual fuck is with new age web designers who don't seem to realize that not everyone is using a tablet or iPhone?
I already think the current site itself is FAR too inefficient, can we get some god damn minimalism please? Density of information is what you should be aiming for; this new site is pretty terrible by that benchmark.

Re:What's with all the pictures?
Did you REALLY work with members of the community to come up with this new design?
Yeah -- and a lot of people actually responded saying they liked the images. That said, we knew plenty of people would prefer a more information-dense layout, so we created the Classic and Headlines options under this icon.
We opened up the beta because we really want more feedback about all these things. Thanks for your input.

Re:One request
I know this isn't exactly what you want, but we do have an option to switch to 'classic' mode using this icon at the top right of the story column.

Does not fit on my screen
See screenshot here: http://i.imgur.com/JBNcRAL.png
I am running the latest stable Firefox on Windows 7 with a 1280x800 display (not huge, but certainly not a small resolution compared to today's laptops). The little text box is cut off at the edge of the screen.
Also, may I add that there is far too much wasted space. I can only fit about 1 - 1.5 headlines on my screen at a time. I prefer a simple text-based layout where the headlines are packed together tightly. This allows me to quickly scan the headlines to see if there's an article worth reading. What's the point of having these useless images and whitespace? It just forces me to manually scroll the page more. The images add nothing of value and just increase bloat.
Remember, Slashdot's core readership is IT professionals, engineers, scientists, STEM students, etc. People who value function over aesthetics. If you sacrifice the former for the latter (and I don't even think the new design is an improvement aesthetically), you will drive away those readers.
The golden rule is K.I.S.S: Keep It Simple, Stupid.

Some issues
In my first minute of using the site I found some issues.
On the home page, there's a popup that is half off my screen. I tried resizing the browser, but it continued to be anchored to the side like that.
Once I clicked on this story, I was greeted with a story in two different fonts (or at least different font sizes).

Re:It deserves every sale it gets
When you account for inflation, game prices have been going down.. Hard to remember games were more expensive back when mommy and daddy were buying them for you.
Mom & Dad never bought me games. They did buy a C64 though, cassette drive, no disk drive. And a modem. -- much better then buying me games.
till they got the phone bill...

It is obvious what is going on here..
FEMA came in waving their ray guns, deploying their blackest of black ops, and flashing their cryptozoology psyops all around to cover up a surfacing of the lavamen/magmen from deep in the planet. Clearly they don't want private citizens getting footage of the government men trying to contain, understand, and quell the uprising.

Re:Independence of the courts ?
AGAIN. How many pencils could erase out of the box?
None, and still none. The pencil doesn't erase, the eraser that came attached to it does. An eraser erasing isn't surprising or revolutionary.
How do you attach that common pencil to that common eraser?
By your ridiculously low standards, this guy from a post I saw on reddit should be able to patent his phone stand made out of a paper clip. And it's actually more ingenious than the pencil eraser because the paper clip wasn't made for that purpose.
As people have already explained to you, the requirement for a patent isn't just that it be something new. It has to also be something that is not obvious. If you didn't encounter any technical challenges you had to solve to make your idea work once you had your idea, it's not patentable. If people had constantly tried to put erasers on pencils before, but nobody succeeded until this guy came out with a way to manufacture an eraser such that it could go on a pencil, that design would have been patentable, but others would have been free to come up with their own alternative designs to put erasers on pencils. Turns out that's not necessary, because the design is trivial.
