It went down Monday night
...it seems like that one went down Monday night already ( Graph).

Re:First sign?
Looks like N and S America have worse stats than Europe
-
First sign?
According to Internet Traffic Report the router defra229-tc.ebone.ne is not responding. Several other KPNQwest/Ebone routers are still up though.

Internet Bandwidth Usage
Funny how Internet Traffic Report is showing a massive decrease in bandwidth usage. Wonder what caused that dip?
Bah.. it must be coincidence -

Look at this..
My friend just informed me of this...
http://www.internettrafficreport.com/#graphs
Look at the first graph. Internet traffic has dropped over 50% since the raids. -
router blowoutMaybe all them warez fuckers are sending out their last dying gasp of illegal traffic. All the North America routers are getting blown out of the water. This link.

How sensible is this?
This seems pretty damn cool from a desktop-wallpaper point of view, but how practical is this?
The 'net is pretty fluid and dynamic, as companies are going bankrupt and starting up all the time. Soon we'll be able to build the map from just a couple of major carriers' networks ;).
Seriously, these things are probably outdated as soon as they're finished. What are the chances of a real-time distributed mapping effort, where networks are dynamically scanned and the data is collated every few days on a few central nodes? It would be very interesting to see not just how the 'net is wired, but to view the shifting dynamics of traffic and connections in a handy animated format.
Sites like Internet Traffic Report get a little bit of the way there, but are too numeric. Ideas? -
Re:New clas A hit ... 64.x.x.x
A well, there seems to be a similiar incident on September 4th, as one can see on the internet traffic report (thanks to another
./ reader for the link!).
In the second graph, an impressive spike in response time can be seen on September 4th that matches the one today... -
WOW - check the backbone ping speeds . . .
They arent as bad as they were this afternoon (theres at least one green time now), but check out the damage.

internet traffic report
If you want to see how bad this has become, look at the current internet traffic report. Internet traffic appears to have come to a halt. It can't really be as bad as it looks there (since I can still get through
:), but this corresponds to the time I started seeing the attack in my server logs. -
Re:I don't know about you
- It looks (from the Incidents graph, at about 2035 UTC Wednesday) like it'll top out at about 60,000 known infected hosts;
- If nothing happens, it could just mean (as with Y2K) that the hype was justified, because everything got fixed, which is why nothing happened;
- To the people saying "yeah, MAE-east is screwed" etc - look at the average response time charts Nothing very dramatic there...
- Er, we were all right about this. Even the trolls
;)

Watch it GrowHere's a link to http://www.internettrafficreport.com/index.html.
North America has the poorest performance, but the major routers all over the world are slowing down.If you click on any region, you will see detailed stats for the major backbone machines, plus performance graphs for the region.
Sorry, but it's not looking good.
ps. I just clicked the link in preview and, while the performance indicies have not changed much in the past few minutes, the trends have all flipped from down to up. So who knows...
-
You could look at this...Internettrafficreport.com for North America. Look at the response time and traffic indexes, right around 21:00 MST.
Oh, and currently, MAE-East is in the shitter, same as last time. No wonder connections may be crappy.

Re:http://www.internettrafficreport.com/NB/ Take a look a the 7 day graph here.
"The "traffic index" is a score from 0 to 100 where 0 is "slow" and 100 is "fast""

Re:your cisco?
I beg to differ. You may wish to have a look at the online traffic analysis reports at various places that map network traffic. The one I go to is the Internet Traffic Report It quite clearly shows that Mae West has been generating 100% packet loss for well over 24hrs now. Here's the North American page. According to the 7 day report, it dropped off air on the 21st and hasn't been back since. Means that I still can't get to most USA based sites that I like to frequent. Sure the 'net routes around the problem, but when something like 70% of the asia-pacific traffic goes through it, that puts a hell of a lot of strain on all the other points.

Router Status Report Site
another useful site that I use all the time is internet traffic report (http://www.internettrafficreport.com/)
this is especially useful in Australia as seen recently, most of the country is knocked out by one cable going down. *sigh*

Re:Internet Weather/Traffic ReportUmmmm... the Internet Traffic Report isn't Google's; it is one of the original Andover.net sites. People forget that Andover was a fine, generally profitable little company before Slashdot and freshmeat and the IPO and the VA buy and all that.
Another Andover site that's still around is one of the earliest online free code archives -- freecode.com.
Nobody ever "heard of" Andover back in those days because each of the company's original sites was treated as a separate entity and we never pushed the "network" thing. But we were there, doing our little thing and having a nice, low-key time.

internettrafficreport.com
OK, I went over to trafficreport.com and really didn't see a majore interruption for Australia. There was a drop down to 12 for about 2 hours, but I doubt that was a major interruption. Maybe they have it figured out by now.

Re:Big pipe?Southern Cross is up, and working, but doesn't have many active customers on it yet. Customer connections were only lit up last week, and now should be in their testing phase.
One interesting point is that the problems caused by the cut cable were nothing compared to the problems Telstra had on the night due to other factors. As this outage notice states, they had routing loops form within their network when the cable went down.
Also, an electricity substation supplying power to the main Telstra internet POP in Sydney exploded around the same time, cutting power to all of their routers. Power wasn't restored until the following morning.

Good luck Ozzies!
Monopolies have a nice way of dragging things out forever. Like new lawsuits, and preliminary injunctions. Right bastards, they are!
So, if Australia's internet traffic index is at 54/100 now, what are they going to be at in three months, providing that Telstra doesn't delay the inevitable? -
Re:Oh dear
I've had the same problem with smaller sites, but I believe it's being caused by the slowdown in Alter.net in Chicago.. it seems like half the sites on the net go through Chicago from Canada, where I am.
There was an earlier post than mentioned this, and also had a good link; Internet Traffic Report.
-
Re:Altavista?
Check out the internet traffic report stats:
There's a major problem with alter.net (uunet) in Chicago. Their router apparently is fed up with all this packet garbage and has gone on strike demanding better working conditions.
istar.net in Canada and michnet are also having big troubles.
And, just as I'm typing this the problems seem to have gone away, and suddenly I can load pages a lot faster! -
Anything to do with lagged 'net in general?
Does this does attack have anything to do with the fact that the N et has sucked for the last four-five days here in North America?

Re:I don't think so
but for many USWest !nterprise customers yesterday half or so of the internet was "down".
I've noticed this too, being a USWest Megabit subscriber. Any links to sites that give a bit more detail than the ITR (hmm, the current index for N. America is pretty (s)low, looks like it took a hit about 7a.m.) -
Re:Good Point, but ... Re:Sampling Bias
There's www.internettrafficreport.com, which tracks top level routers around the world.
North America is cruising right along this morning, though core-fa5-0-0.ontario.canet.ca is dropping 20% of its packets for some reason, and out in Asia, a Phillippine machine seems to be having a heart attack. -
Check out the Internet traffic report
I checked out the Internet traffic report to see what kind of effect this harmless mistake had. North American traffic statistics
Keen! Can you spot the time the big bad backhoe operator cut the cord? -
Andover.net doesn't instill me with confidenceI guess I have to post as an AC, since I tried to create an account, and I get told it's a duplicate nickname or a duplicate or invalid email address no matter what I enter... Take a look at http://www.internettrafficreport.com/, it's linked to from the http://www.andover.net page. They claim to be measuring the traffic on the net by measuring latency between various points. A link on the bottom for their FAQ describes their questionable techniques (but I will leave it to someone with more knowledge of such matters to critique), and this disturbing question and answer:
Q: What is "packet loss (%)"?
A: Packet Loss measures the reliability of a connection. A known chunk of data is sent to the router and then the router is supposed to send the same data back unaltered (echo). If the packet returns intact then there was 0% packet loss and that is good. If the packet returns with half of its data garbled or missing then that is 50% packet loss, which is poor. 100% packet loss means the packet never returned.
That's what % packet loss means now? Would you trust someone who made such a statement?
