Agreed, If I buy parts for a client, I tack on $10 or 10%, whichever is greater. That's my fee for sourcing the part and driving to pick it up.

I make my money on time. My time is worth $125/hour. If you don't want to pay that, don't call me. My friends know that I deal with broken computers day in and day out, so I don't get the "my internets are broken" calls.

If you provide good service, people will pay. They will also call you again, refer new customers, and help you buy that new iPod touch.

That being said, I have had a number of people balk at my rate, take their systems to Geek Squad, and call me 2 weeks later to come fix it properly.

The reality is, techs are the new plumbers, there will always be guys screwing people over and providing bad service. The goal is to be one of the guys in your area with a good rep, and subsequently a good and growing customer base.

Yeah, good luck with that. Seems to be working real well with China. Draconian copyright laws are NOT the way to ensure artists rights and promote creative output.

Fair use and fair compensation are.

Perhaps the US should look into fixing its corrupt entertainment industry before worrying about what other contries allow or do not allow citizens to do with content. /soapbox.

It is not the cost of the instrument, nor the cost of a repair mission that will keep NASA from fixing Hubble, but rather a lack of available mission space to get a crew up there to do the work. The Shuttle fleet is under the gun big time to get the ISS finished before it is decommisioned. There is no other vehicle around that can dock with or, more accurately, "grab" the Hubble, so without a dedicated shuttle mission, a repair is impossible.

Looks like we will in fact be waiting till at least 2013 for any new deep field images. Atleast there is still a ton of science to be done on the existing data... So, in reality, this is much more of a loss for the armchair astronaut than it is to the real science teams.

I agree that users in Asia and europe are far ahead in terms of what they are able to use their phones for, however, most of these functions (exclusive of things like video conferencing )are at the service provider level, and can be done with an moderatly priced Motorola or Nokia. There are very few phones available that pack more features than the iPhone has and there are none that I have ever seen that even come close to the iphone in terms of design.

I am not saying that the iPhone will be the blackberry/windows PDA killer that some claim. Hell, I think that they will be lucky to capture .5% of the market, much less the 1% that Jobs was talking about. However, for the North American poweruser/gadget junkie the iPhone is very attractive indeed.

  10. Re:Nail on the Head. on No Third-party Apps on iPhone Says Jobs · · Score: 1

Perhaps I should have been more specific.

On a PDA/Phone/MP3 player, interface is an important part of function. The only two issues I have with the iPhone are that it is only available on Cingular (can't get that here in Canada) and the lack of third party app support. While these are two major issues as far as function is concerned, they do not outweigh the fact that this is the first "smart" phone that solves almost all of the ease of use issues that have plagued earlier devices.

I have been an early adopter of PDAs and smart phones for about 5 years now and have owned Palm, Blackberry, and I-Mate devices. While they were all "best of breed" when I purchased them, they all had some big-time issues. Most recently, my I-Mate PDA2K. Windows mobile was ok, bloated and a little awkward, but not terrible, the big problem was with the phone part of my smart phone. The iPhone seems to address all of the issues I have experienced in the past, AND it manages to look damn fine while doing it.

This is exactly what I have been telling friends the past few days. Sure the Greenphone and OpenMoko are great little devices, but neither of them has the design of the iPhone.

The iPhone is just down right nice, and the interface is fantastic.

However... I don't get why apple fanboys are so anti microsoft. In the past few years, Apple has proven to be just a evil as MS and in some ways worse. The whole "no third party apps" is a prime example, great... another Apple product with some amazing hardware that won't run the software I want.

I'll still buy an iPhone though... just as soon as unlocked ones start hitting ebay.

Ahh, but you forget! Comparing the P/E of GOOG (81) to the P/E of MSFT(23) is not a good example. Google has room for GROWTH, where as MSFT finds it harder to grow each year. So while GOOG is trading at a high P/E, investors are willing to look at FUTURE earnings. If GOOG can do the $9+ /share earnings in 2007 that most analysts are predicting, than it is trading at a much lower multiple than YHOO(59)(which is also not growing at nearly as fast a pace.). If you were buying GOOG based on 50 times 2007 earnings, it would be a ~$450 stock.
