Re:Great, but who's going to use it?
It's interesting how rampant gun fan's paranoia is. This story isn't about forcing everyone to have the technology, it is about a company trying to get funding to develop the viable first version. It's like you won't even entertain the idea that the technology could exist or be trialled. Maybe some people might even want to buy it if it works. Is that so terrible, so frightening?
This is a long read, but the fact that you used the words "gun fan" and not "gun nut" or "gun crazy" makes me think you're not totally lost. It sums up why we gun owners and second amendment defenders don't trust even the pursuit of this technology. We know from history that it WILL be used as another attempt for gun control.

Re:Jokes are cool, But let's talk about farm robot
At Iowa State University, one of the professors in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department is working on robotic combines. The project is still in the early stages, and probably won't affect most of the jobs that migrant workers are used for, but is still an interesting development. Details can be found here.

Relax- Nothing new...
Whats with the evil-american-corporations-eating-the-souls-of-th
e -poor conspiracy theories? The grocery stores here in Ames, IOWA have already had fingerprint scanning ATM's for 6 months!

While there is a greater likelyhood of finger-trafficking in the slums of India than in Ames, the technology itself is good enough for american companies to use it here in the states.

Re:Kinda defeats a parking meter feature
I'm not way off-track one of the purposes of a parking meter is the annoyance feature. Keeps a set of rich guys from pumping quarters in it all day long without any negative consequences for them.
yes, that's exactly it. that's the same reason that in many places it's illegal to put money in someone else's meter even as a good samaritan gesture -

Re:Depends on the type of engineering
Interesting you should say that. I just read an article about engineering enrollment in the local University's daily rag. It had some Undergraduate Engineering enrollment figures for about the last 20 years for Michigan State University. They showed a drop in enrollment of about 25% over the last 5 or 6 years, from just over 4000 to just over 3000. That's quite a drop. Iowa State Daily

Here's Another One
This one doesn't have a light, but it's a lot cooler looking (and has a lot more solar cells.) Funny that the two appear to have been developed at about the same time.

Re:Bill buys Apple?
The university I am at just changed from Coke to Pepsi. An article in our school paper stated that the university gets US$0.84 per 20oz bottle for Dr. Pepper and Seven Up products and US$0.70 per 20oz bottle of Pepsi. The cost to the student is US$1.25 per bottle.
Not sure what the terms of the old Coke contract were.

Re:Progress
Yeah, while my school (Iowa State) isn't held in as high esteem as Harvard, we've been hearing the call for patent reform as well.

Re:Let me think....NO
Powell has pushed an agenda that is allowing a lot of concentration of media power.
As well as a blatent give-away of large amounts of already registered frequency to the power industry through BPL (broadband over power lines) authorization. As a telecom CEO, I can tell you Powell has his head stuck way up the power industry's interface on this one. He simply will not listen to any perspective. Someone's paid a handsome amount for this attention.
As a registered (and voting) republican, I'm shocked at how Powell has totally given away the shop on BPL. (I work with the power industry and owe my business's existance to them as well - but a terrible idea is still that). Of course, state congress critters are too overwhelmed by the technical natures of BPL and respond with a "well, I'm sure we'll all work our disagreements out after Mr. Powell pays back...er... gives the electrical utilities their gift..er...permission."
BPL will wreck frequencies. It's science, not lobbying. It's like putting a high density hog farm on every block and pretending any noticed smell can "be managed." Why engineer something all the engineers know will be a nightmare?
Why trash the frequencies and permit major disruption across the board for any reason other than quid pro quo for Powell to the power industry? -

That is the worst thing I've ever readYes, voting. That will work wonders. You realistically have the choice of poeple who voted and/or supported the Patriot Act (Kerry, Dean, Edwards, Leiberman, i.e. the entire Democratic field) *OR* the guy that actually signed the shit into law, Mr. G.W. Bush. Whutta choice.
:/Most of the Democratic candidates have spoken out vocally against extending the P.A.T.R.I.O.T. act. To contrast, George W. Bush recently advocated not only extending, but expanding the damn thing-- in his State of the Union speech, no less. (The applause you heard when he said "the PATRIOT act is due to expire soon" was not coming from the pro-Bush side of the room.)
If you believe there is no significant difference between the candidates on this issue, you're just plain nuts. I'm sorry your favorite candidate isn't in the race anymore, but if you keep equivocating and misrepresenting the situation, you're only going to be rewarded with PATRIOT Acts II, III, IV and V.

Re:Memes
Blaming software fashions on SFV is just like blaming flu outbreak on a SVV (stupid virus victim).
Not so. The "stupid" part of SFV means something like "susceptible to memetic infection". So in making an analogy with biological viruses, you'll need to change "stupid" to something which connotes susceptibility to viral invasion (such as sleep deprivation, old age or stress).
