Slashdot, news for people who didn't watch CNN

Re:Twitter showing some value
The traditional media have struggled to cover this, and there has been a lot of criticism of outlets such as CNN for not being on the ball.
CNN itself has said a lot of their reporting comes from Twitter and CNN's own iReport service. International journalists are warned away from going to demonstrations by the government, I don't know how many tymes I heard it said that the government could not guaranty reporters safety, but it's been a lot. I know it may sound spineless of reporters to not report but if you're dead you can't. I would hope that those who can blend into the crowds.

Re:Airbus Litany
CFM International is working on a software modification for its CFM56-5B engines after a series of engine stalls on Airbus aircraft in 2008.
Evendale-based CFM is a joint venture of GE Aviation and France's Snecma. The high-pressure compressors and combustors for CFM56 engines are produced by GE, and the engines are assembled in Evendale and France. The Airbus A320 can be powered by either two CFM56-5 engines or two IAE V2500 engines. Regardless of the engines, the plane has the same operating specifications, and the casual passenger notices no difference.
Fiat ???
In 1982, attention was focused on developing an engine in the 25,000 lbf (111 kN) thrust class for the 150 seater market. The engine was initially called the RJ500-35, but when Pratt & Whitney, MTU and FIAT joined the consortium some time afterwards the engine was renamed the V2500. V denotes the five original partners, whilst 2500 symbolizes the original thrust level of 25,000 lbf (111 kN). FIAT later withdrew from the consortium.
Troll.

Re:Do they have ratings?
These days are over.
Go program beats professional 9 Dan at 7 stones handicap
On a side note, Zhou Junxun won the LG Cup 2007, so this is definitely a top player.
A 7 stone handicap is still HUGE. I've beaten a professional (Kano 7d) with that handicap.

alternative energy
Oh please. I bet you're the sort of person who believes that we can replace all our coal plants with Wind and Hydro by 2015 if we spent enough money.
In "A Solar Grand Plan" Sciam lays out how Solar power could provide 69% of the USA's electricity by 2050, about 35 years after your 2015. The Wind Energy Resource Atlas of the United States by the Renewable Resource Data Center (RReDC) of the government's National Renewable Energy Lab details the potential wind power of various areas of the US. As T Boone Picken's Picken's Plan lays out the Rocky Mountains alone contain enough potential wind energy to also provide electricity to the 48 continuous states.
First you have to get the liscensing for all these power plants. For Hydro, this is mostly impossible since someone will stand up and say that the turbines chew up fish at a ridiculous rate and destroy the river. For wind, people will complain about the birds. These drawbacks were true in 1960 but they aren't anymore. You'll be tied down for at least 3 years trying to get the permits and approval to build. And that's being optomistic.
Dams do mess up rivers. However some years ago there was a story on
/. about how hydro can be used to generate electricity without dams. Instead water mills like egg beaters are lowered from a boom into the river then the moving water spins the mills. I wonder what's happened with that, I haven't heard anything about it since. What's stopping wind, especially offshore wind farms in places like Cape Cod in so called "liberals", who are not liberal, backyard are NIMBYs. And I bet many of them say they're environmentalists.Coal is mostly clean now
Coal is no where near being clean, and never will be. Sure emissions from coal-fired power plants may be cleaner than before but coal mining is not clean what so ever.
As for natural Gas, its completely clean.
Gas is not clean either. Sure, like coal, CO2 may be captured and stored. Nitrogen oxides also have to be captured. Gas, at least Liquefied Natural Gas or LNG, also needs the same sort of infrastructure as oil.
I *want* one of these plants in my backyard.
I'd rather have PVs on my roof and a wind genie in my backyard.
If you want to turn this country into Vermont, maybe you should just move to Vermont.
No, the state for the Free State Project is New Hampshire, next door.

Ok, he's a hero (sometimes)CNN did a piece on him, suing mortgage companies who were evicting homeowners: http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-109261
Sheriff Dart has taken a stance against mortgage companies that are evicting renter's from homes that property owners are allowing to go into eviction. Sheriff Dart says, "Too many renters are being evicted for landlords' problems".

Re:George Riddick - the one man RIIA of clipart
Well, you seem to dispute the information from http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-221999. Since I have no other background on either you or ireport.com, I think I cannot have a strong opinion on this matter.
Then I just hope you are honest. Please think carefully before sending these letters to people. And maybe some of the little guys who "made up a few things to get out of trouble" did this because they were desperate, due to excessive pressure (an aggressive and threatening letter, demanding confidentiality and urgency)? I'm not saying that pressure justifies an illegal action, but maybe if you apply less pressure, it could be better for both parties (assuming you are honest and want a fair outcome). I don't know, I am not familiar with the situation.
I mean, I just hope that you are honest. And please think carefully before each cease and desist letter, and try not to make innocent people settle because it is cheaper than litigating - that is unfair, and that is why we don't like RIAA.
Also, don't do something immoral just because there is a legislation loophole that says it is legal. For example, some commenters have claimed that some of your images are too generic, so someone could very well have created their own image but, since it is similar to yours, technically infringes on your copyright. I don't have the expertise and time to investigate this allegation, so I can only ask you to be fair.Cheers and good luck

Re:Worth a try....
Agreed 100%. Make a video with your webcam and then submit your story to iReport.com. Click the UploadNow! Button. CNN loves to run stories submitted by the men and women in the service. If you're lucky, they'll send Robin Mead.

Ageism!?
I think not wanting to elect a guy who is wavering around the average life expectancy of an American man, with a family history of not even reaching that mark, is a valid concern.
This iReport post sums it up:
http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-85412
Yes I looked for a better source but couldn't find any. The facts in that story will check out, except the average life expectancy of an American man which seems to be all over the place, with 70~74 being the most common answers I can find (if anyone can get a solid number from a good source please post it).
It would be like saying that not wanting a 4' tall guy on your basketball team, or not wanting a narcoleptic on your gaming clan is being unfair.

iReport - News? Or citizen journalism?
How could you possibly allow just anybody to post just anything under your [CNN] label unless you have blazing billboards that say
Which part of "CNN's unverified citizen journalism site" was unclear?
Okay, so I have to see for myself...
The site currently is titled "Unedited. Unfiltered. News." but it really doesn't mention that it is "citizen journalism." It looks like a cross between Digg/Slashdot and CNN. SO I guess someone could be confused. But I bet a big "THIS IS NOT NEWS I JUST MADE IT UP OMG!!" would not have helped Apple's stock that day.

Re:So true.
Hmmmm.
Every illegal immigrant may not commit every singly offense against the US, but a large number are committing crimes and offenses and causing problems.
And that doesn't address the various scams they run, like insurance fraud. (also here or here or here).
