Re:...liabilities
{citation needed]
Only by uninformed basement dwellers, anyone who's been even casually following "the news" for the past five years would know it's true.
That's the problem. "The news" broadcasts controversial events and propaganda and anecdotal evidence and videos of stupid hippies yelling at cops because they hate cops and unruly college students refusing to comply with peace officer demands at public speaking events and then whining when they get tazed. That's all I've ever seen on "the news". How about some actual data? How about some real statistics? Here's an irl scientific study which stated that out of the nearly 1000 cases of Taser use studied, 99.7% resulted in minor to no injury (as in, fall and scratch yourself on the concrete or similar), three hospitalizations, and two deaths which were found to not have been the result of Taser use: Taser Medical Safety: the state of the science - William P. Bozeman, MD, FACEP, FAAEM (PDF of a slideshow presentation made at University of Florida), Study: Tasers are safe to use - Physorg, Independent studies could answer questions about Tasers. I can't seem to locate a published record of that particular study, but here is another paper by Dr Bozeman that compares Tasers to other methods of incapacitation: Medical Aspects of Less Lethal Weapons.
Your turn.

Re:ECS at Frys
I bought an ECS board at Fry's while back. A combo with an AMD Athlon 3800+ X2. It was $20 cheaper with the board than the CPU alone on pricewatch.com. Went through 2 DOA boards, then on the third, just decided to not even bother and buy an Abit board.
Funny thing is that the Fry's people told me that they get HUGE returns on ECS boards because ECS doesn't really test their boards out of factory. I was explicitly recommended to buy a different board. To be fair, at $20 discount off of the current going rate, I can't really complain.
What is the main difference between Abit and ECS? Japanese versus Chinese. The Japanese are a thorough and technical lot who (even though they have been going through some economic hard times) have a culture that breeds engineers and processes that are equivalent to that of the Germans, but with even less regard for nature, ethics or Human life.
To recap: You want to buy a shiny, reliable, high-quality gadget? Buy Japanese. No contest.
You want a low-cost knockoff? Buy from the country that spawned Fake Eggs: http://www.ispub.com/ostia/index.php?xmlFilePath=j ournals/ijto/vol2n1/eggs.xml -

Re:not terribly surprising...
According to this graph, the TCO of open source software (including OpenOffice running on Linux desktop systems) over a period of years--for example, I assume, from youth until graduation--is lower than that of proprietary solutions. In addition, being trained exclusively on open solutions is statistically no handicap at all.

Re:Wow...
And just to add to what you said, there's evidence that children can recognize simple, universal pictograms such as these even from birth. Naturally, this depends on the symbols being recognizable and vivid.
