Forget Google use Ixquick!
http://www.ixquick.com/
Seach logs are blown away after 48 hours. I've tried this seach engine and it produces results as good if not better than the Big Evil.
Ah, privacy restored! -
Re:Counter example...
Me, and just about everyone else I know. While we may or may not have done something wrong, this most likely will not be revealed by our search histories. I like privacy because I enjoy my privacy. That's all there is too it. Why do I need to want to hide something so Google doesn't know about it? I'm sick of Google. Is there an alternative search engine that might have some concept of privacy rights?
At least one: ixquick

Re:Context?
You are a moron. Google Search logging the queries is not the problem. Google Analytics is. If I query Google it really isn't that surprising that they know what I am searching for. But they really shouldn't know every single time I visit Slashdot, without even using Google to get there.
And here again the problem is not that I can't protect me against that. I can. The problem is that the vast majority of web users doesn't even know about it.
Yes, exactly. I use noscript firefox extension and it's astounding how many sites have installed a google-analytics script in return for higher page rankings, even ones who are supposedly concerned about privacy.
Considering that many people use other browsers and that most firefox users probably don't even know about noscript or why they need it, the compromising of privacy by google-analytics is on a huge scale.
BTW, on the other end, try to use a private search engine such as the ixquick meta search engine, which doesn't store your IP.

Re:Simple solution
My humble suggestion of Fx privacy-enforcement add-ons:
TACO, Optimize Google, Better Privacy + delete cookies when closing Firefox + use scroogle or similar.

Re:Lol...
I actually avoid Google search. Don't get me wrong, it is still the best and not always and not easy to avoid, but I love GMail and I really don't like all my searches and emails in hand of a single company.
My search engine of choice is ixquick. It has a very good privacy policy, e.g. you can use https and it's not storing IP addresses - I'm looking at you Google Inc. - that makes it the first place for me to go. Ixquick uses - among other engines - Bing , but I couldn't care less.
Most people here at slashdot are not MS-phobic, but hell, there are good reasons to distrust MSFT. This however is true for any company, so I for my part maintain a relaxed, unagitated distrust against every company (or governmental agency) and try not to depend on any single company too much.

Use another search engine.
Some may wish to use http://us.ixquick.com/eng/privacy-policy.html when searching for things those in power may well not like.

Re:I thought they'd been doing this for years
Two ways to DENY Google:
http://www.ixquick.com/ (Meta-search engine that doesn't store IP)
http://scroogle.org/ (Google search without tracking!)
-
Not broken just bent by google.
I used http://us.ixquick.com/eng/privacy-policy.html with no problems at all and no retention of data problems.

ixquick
ixquick recives privacy award from eu
http://us2.ixquick.com/uk/protect_privacy.html
Ixquick's position:
You have a right to privacy.
Your search data should never fall into the wrong hands.
The only real solution is deleting your data.
We delete our users' privacy data within 48 hrs.
We are the first and only search engine to do so.
Our initiative is receiving an overwhelmingly positive response! -

"Google has pledged to begin erasing the information about users' search requests within 18 to 24 months."
18 to 24 MONTHS?!?!?!?
Ixquick already erases their users' search requests after 48 hours past the time the search request was made. -

Re:ixquick
I switched to http://ixquick.com/ which does not keep records.
No, they don't have to when they redirect through someone who does keep records. I just went there and did a search and when I clicked on a link it redirected me through http://www23.overture.com/d/sr/?xargs= with a bunch of arguments and tried to set a cookie and then transparently redirected me to the original link as if nothing happened. It looks like there is a lot of information passed in the URL to overture.com. Just what is overture.com? Hmmm, take a look:
http://www.overture.com/
I think I'll stick with Google thank you. -

Re:Come on!!!
Think about it...how many of us use google to find everything. And if you can't find it with google how are you suppose to find it.
Use IXQuick or Metor MetaSearch. Xenu.net is the first link from just searching for "xenu" in IXQuick and is clearly mentioned in the first two links on Metor (which cites Google as a source?)...
One fun part of IE is the Quick Search app. Use [me|ix|g] searchterm+ to get the millions of results. Nothing on Google? So what, I'll look elsewhere. It's not the be all and end all of search engines.
