Notable quote
"Anyone who would *not* lie to protect their business from an attacking competitor is suspect in my mind" ~ Jack Campbell (of DVForge)
(taken from http://www.jackwhispers.com/catchIV.html) -
Jack Campbell
His spotty history is well-document in a MacInTouch special report.
Actually there was an entire website started just to inform people of his machinations. -
Re:DVForge / MacMice? Great...
Read about that at Jackwhispers

Re:Info about cancellation
No the guy is just incredibly stupid
... Catch Me If You Can Pt II: The True Story Behind MacMice -
Jack has been active lately ...
Wow, gone for a few minutes and you miss a lot.
Jack has been active lately. He is notorious in the Mac Community.
Everyone should read my article on his company and past in the Mac Community. It's called: Catch Me If You Can Part II: The True Story Behind MacMice
Make sure to also see the about section to gain clarity on who writes Jackwhispers and why. -

Re:Stupid
DVforge is owned by one Jack Cambell, a known con artist and admirer of publicity stunts. This is exactly that and nothing more: a publicity stunt.d I'd be very surprised if 1) either of the two computers actually exist, 2) the prize money exists, 3) if the computers exist and the prize money exists, then Jack will ever pay up if someone wins.

fug-dup the link. Sorry.

Re:Apple Wants Sales, Not Popularity
Exactly
...
How many people base their decisions on how much they actually like the company?
Very few if any Coca Cola collectors refuse Pepsi if its the only soft drink choice.
Also, about a year back there was a guy in the Mac Community named Jack Campbell - he had the worst reputation in all that was Mac. Now, he runs a multi million dollar business. Nobody seems to care about his reputation when buying from him. -
Re:Affiliate programs
I use it on my site and my site happens to use a BLOG as its small news item/incremental update/forum section.
I have made about $7.35 from the affiliate program so far.
The cool thing is, it doesn't just apply to songs. One day I will luck up and someone will buy an iPod or iMac in the same order - you get 2% off that as well if they buy with 48 hours of clicking on your link.
Each editorial that I post on my website, I post a corresponding song.
For instance: My last story was on Bleu Rose Software exiting the Mac Market. I posted (with the story) - I'm Blue by Eiffel 65 -
About Think Secret
I have thought for a long time that Think Secret had the sole intention of harming Apple.
Their rumor accuaracy is amazing and it seems they like to steal any thunder they can from Apple.
They take any good news and put a negative spin on it such as; iPod sales. It is predicted that Apple will sell 4 million+ iPods this quarter ... Think Secret's spin is - small Apple Reseller's weren't getting enough and the two hard drive suppliers probably wouldn't be able to keep up.
I have also believed that Think Secret's knowledge of the reseller lawsuit brought on MacAdam & Elite Computers is a little too intimate. It's almost like THIS is who's running the show there.
I think Apple should go after them for more than just "trade secret revealing and developer coercing" but also libel and malicious intent.
By The Time It Got To The Other End Of The Room: Notes About Apple Rumor Sites
-
Apple rumor sites hurt Apple more than help
The dips in stock and sales around July of each year and December/early Jabnuary would tell a different tale.
People pay CLOSE attention to Apple rumors - rumors sites do more to hurt Apple than help it.
There is a difference between rumor/speculation and STEALING AND COERCING = Apple Rumor sites.

Re:http://www.paypalsucks.com/
And of course those that do reasearch on Paypal and find the paypalwarning.com and paypalsucks.com websites - also don't realize:
- Posts that praise paypal are deleted [often]
- Posts that try to assist users with problems are deleted
- Paypalsucks.com is sponsored by the competition - yowcow
- You are allowed to post anonymously and as registered
- There's a disporportionate # of comments to registered users

Great story, but not a "how to be a success" story
This story was one of the best I have read in recent memory.
That said, I hate it when great programmers just sit on a product and stop innovating or coming up with new directions to take their product.
In my opinion, Panic should try to become something like Pixo and create great Mac friendly interfaces for Mp3 portable players or work with Napster and Real, and Microsoft to produce a player that will play secure WMP files well on a Mac.
My preference was always towards SoundJam over Audion, but still after SoundJam became iTunes - I leaned towards Audion for the custom skins.
If interested, I wrote a bit about this on my website.

Some other anomolies ... ???
Just because someone is registered Democrat does not mean they have to vote Democrat.
I would consider myself a very conservative Republican - yet I voted for Clinton in 1992 and 1996. As he was the right man for the time.
Also, what about the several hundred dogs that voted Democrat in Ohio, yes, dogs, as in Chows and Great Danes - they all voted Democrat. There were also a lot of dead people that voted Democrat in this election.
Look, however you hash it and whichever candidate cheated, you aren't going to find 3 million+ votes!!!
SLASHDOT HAS YET TO MENTION that Kerry cheated during the first debate - and that researching and enhancing the video would have been a great geek topic.
Further, I would like to add that Democrat Poll watchers in my area are under investigation for calling Republican voters and harassing them - I'm one they have harassed.
Because I did not like the unopposed candidate that was running for register of deeds - I had all my friends (47 total) vote for me - two of them have been called and told they were undermining our democracy by voting for me. -
Re:PayPalSucks Dot Com is horrible
Paypalsucks dot com is funded by the competition.

Re:Alternative: Yow Cow
Yowcow is VERY shadey. They fund the paypalsucks.com website. That is a very low thing to do.
I did a story about the problems that paypalsucks and yowcow pose.

I looked up "virus for the Mac"
... and came up with Intego and FUD.
Make no doubt about it. There is a French company that writes Mac software called Intego.
THEY ARE the ones spreading this new rumor, just as they spread the "trojan horse" myth a few months back.
It's time to sell some more software - so it's time spread some more FUD.
A previous story I had done on this -
My site was one of the 1st to bring this to light
I did an article on my jackwhispers website about this.
I was one of the first to point this out and MANY of the PearPC forums respondents replied to me in email and told me about all the links within this article. (One of them is quite startling - about Arben having downloaded PearPC)
There are a few other insights at the link above.
Sorry to whore my own site, but I almost think it should be linked here too because I added a little political UNcorrectness to the mix.
Why the Cherry or The Pear May Be Apple's Next Lemon -
Already been linking to songs on my site ...
This is really great. I have been linking to songs as part of all my stories on my website - since I started it in January. My site stats show that 3 out of every 10 visitors are at least clicking on the iTunes Music Store Link. I'll now be able to see how many people are actually buying songs. I've had a few reader emails telling me that they have.
[Note that one thing the parent is not mentioning ... not everyone that "signs up" is going to be able to participate - there is a case by case approval process]
I realize that 5% isn't much, but it's actually a huge percentage considering what Apple makes. [I take it that their estimated 3 profit per song has gone up]
This could be a great way for websites such as mine - who are also Apple oriented to get a tiny bit of operation revenue.
I hate banner ads - so it 's neat that I can now have a story element as part of my revenue.
Some examples:
Is It A Sin To Buy A Mac Devil Inside ~ INXS
How To Avoid An Auction Scam Without Really Trying eBay ~ Weird Al Yankovic
What Kon Man!Confunkshunizeya ~ Con Funk Shun
I really appreciate that Apple has now made me a part of the not only the downloading process but the true sharing process. Because sharing does involve some form of compensation or benefit. :) -
