Also: Gmail gets POP access
Google also started implementing
POP access for Gmail today (my account has it enabled already). There's no IMAP yet, and we know there were ways of doing this before, but it's an interesting direction for Google to take. As stated in the article, they don't intend to start charging for POP access or mail forwarding in the future. So how can Gmail's ad-based business model continue to be viable when its users can read their mail from external clients and via external addresses? -
only person left?
Am I the only person left that still prefers to NOT leave email on someone elses server and POP it instead??????????
My GMail account is basically useless as is because I don't want to use the Pop Goes The Gmail Hack. -
This is awesome! This sucks!
Ok, so I started with this huge happy giggle when I saw this... exactly what I've been waiting for to fully switch to gmail. I love Gmail, but currently stick to Yahoo since Y!IM will let me know when I have new mail, and that's a feature I desperately need. I considered some of the third-party equivalants, like Pop Goes the Gmail, but they rely on hacking through the website and all it takes is a change from GMail to break them.
But then I noticed that it was for Win2k/XP/2k3 only. WTF? That's great for home, but at work (where I spend most of my time), I'm stuck on Windows ME!! So now this sucks as much as it rocks. I'm sad.
Personally, I wish Google had taken my suggestion to heart: password-protected RSS feeds of your email subjects. Then anybody could write a 3rd party notifier. -
Re:I would PAY to get IMAP access to Gmail
Not IMAP, but you can get POP access to Gmail through PgtGM. Not sure how much Google likes it though

What does this mean for .net appsDoes this mean I can run Pop Goes the Gmail on linux now?
I really was disappointed when I found out this uses
.NET, because the most recent .NET framework doesn't install properly on Crossover Office yet.Is there any way to get an app like this running on linux? I'd like to be able to archive my gmail account and have a local copy for those rare days when I don't have internet access.

Re:Yeah, but Gmail's better
Pop Goes the Gmail
That should do the trick for people wanting pop3 access :)
"Pop Goes the Gmail is a program that sits between the http://gmail.com web server and your email client, converting messages from web format into POP3 format that a program such as Outlook Express or Thunderbird can understand." -
Re:Me too!.. but not quite.
Will POP do?

Re:asdf
there is yahoopops for yahoo
and pop goes the gmail for gmail (which seems to have dead links on the site) -
Re:Yahoo e-mail
If you're running Windows, you can try POP goes the GMail. It's a POP3/SMTP server, like YahooPOPs for Yahoo.

Re:GMAIL FOR MOZILLA / THUNDERBIRD
If you're running Windows, you can use "POP goes the GMail" -- get it at http://jaybe.org/pgtgm/.
