Re:voiding my warranty
This is a good point... there is going to be a lot of free/very cheap TiVo Boxes coming onto the market in 4 months time there is inevitably a hacking community
... I'm not sure how useful a hacked TiVo is though http://www.keegan.org/jeff/tivo/hackingtivo.html http://tivo.stevejenkins.com/ -
Re:DVR
No warning is issued when disk space is about to run out, and there is no way to check how much is left.
I'm sure you've been informed endlessly that Suggestions are a half-decent way to track available space for those models that don't have the Recently Deleted folder, but perhaps you have a fear of them. -
Re:and orbActually people have been doing this sort of thing on their TiVos for about four or five years now:
http://www.keegan.org/jeff/tivo/tivokillerappstory .htmlHere is my killer-app tivo/tivoweb/palmpilot story. (I originally posted this story on the AVS TiVo Underground). I've since grown to depend on this feature, and people don't believe me when I tell the story until I hand them my Palm VIIx and they see what's currently on our TiVo. I can just imagine having kids someday and having them take features like this for granted.
My killer-app tivo/tivoweb/palmpilot story
September 6, 2001
I've got a new story I tell to people when I talk about hacking my TiVo.
A week ago, I, my wife, and my Dad were sitting at a Patriots game in Foxborough Stadium (we just got season tickets after years of waiting). Then when a few incredible plays happened in a row, and my dad missed a few of them because he was getting food, I told him he should call my Mom and have her TiVo the 11'oclock news for him so he could see them.
I then got a bit upset for a second or two, thinking "damn, Laurie and I can't call anyone because we're both here, so no one is going to TiVo it for us at *our* house...".. Then a huge lightbulb appeared over my head, my left hand reached down to my pocket, and pulled out my Palm VIIx. I went to my upstairs TiVo's tivoweb page, and scheduled the recording of the 11'oclock news on channel 7. When we got home, sure enough, it had recorded it for us (and we watched all the plays over again).
(Phillips' "Got to admit it's getting betterrr.... it's getting betttttter allll the tiiiiiiimme" song ran through my head for the rest of the night. TiVo itself needs a catchy song) ..Jeff (pretty damned happy)
Edit: I just read my post to my wife and she correctly pointed out that it had been she that remembered that I had been accessing the TiVo via the Palm Pilot, and that it was her suggestion to record it. All due credit for that revelation is hereby bestowed upon her, with all due apologies, benefits, and whatnot. -
Pinball helped me nab my wife!Man, I hope they keep making machines. Pinball was a large part of how I proposed to my wife (indirectly):
Of course, Theatre of Magic is a Bally machine, amd they're already gone.

It was in my kitchen.
Back a few jobs ago a friend of mine found out about some contest for the messiest apartment. She lent me her digital camera, told me to take pictures of each room, and that she should get half of the winnings.
I entered, and didn't win (I think it was fixed.. how could I not win? (pics))
Anyway, I couldn't show her one of the pics, this picture of my kitchen, because I realized at the last second that it showed her copy of the Star Wars Christmas Special (visible on the floor), and I wasn't ready to give it back. :) -

Re:MythTV is great
I forgot to include the Home Media Option which lets you have the webserver capability, that's an additional $99.
You can do this for free with series 1 TiVos using the bash shell and TiVoWeb. -
I programmed my TiVo from a football game!
My killer app story is about how I programmed my TiVo from a football game:

Re:Halo
I remember reading that opponents size you up when they see you - do sort of a threat assessment. If you walk in a room confidently, kill plenty of opponents easily without wasting ammo or stumbling around, etc, then they will actually become afraid of you and cower appropriately.. On the other hand, if you hide, act nervous, etc, they may see you as easy prey and be more confident.
I've theorized that that's got to have something to do with the difference between easy, normal, heroic, and legendary.. I imagine that among other things, they crank that threshold up on Legendary mode, so it's more likely they're not afraid of you.. (they even say something like "You face opponents who have never known defeat, who laugh in alien tongues at your efforts to survive.")
