How about "The Lion King"?
-
Re:Finally...
They also own their version of Nadia: Secret of the Blue Water and Kimba, the White Lion.
Just a reminder that Disney doesn't just shamelessly steal from American folklore and then try to lock it up forever; they are quite happy to steal from other cultures too.
Keep this in mind in a few years when Disney tries to find a way to loophole their way into retaining ownership of the original Steamboat Willie -- which, if I'm understanding this ruling, Disney can no longer keep perpetually copyrighted through bribing congress.

Re:Many versus Awesome
No, tanks were not an option as the ninja's easily disabled them by throwing shurikens in the drive sprockets.
After the ninja's saw the German culture pirated by Disney, they decided the pirates pose a danger so
the ninja's collectively imploded with a white flash to protect their culture and ancestry. No one has seen a real ninja since.
Ahh, the ninjas disappeared. That explains why Disney could go from pirating German culture to pirating Japanese culture.

Re:obligatoryFunny, I think if "little bad guy" took my homemade independent movie and spread it around, he'd be facing two charges. Jack and Shit. No prosecutors, no FBI, no nothing. Same if the big movie studio stole my film. The reason this went anywhere is because the movie studio can afford endless lawyers, and can pull the strings that us 'mortals' can't.
We shouldn't prosecute any bad guy if the law is not equally enforced across the board.

That's already happening: http://www.kimbawlion.com/rant2.htm

Re:Good
The Judge's name is Kimba.
A Japanese film called Kimba The White Lion was remixed by Disney into "The Lion King".
http://www.kimbawlion.com/rant2.htm
It's ironic that Disney now claims exclusive rights to the remix and claims it is 100% original and that they were not aware of Kimba.
Ok, perhaps somewhat of a tangent.
-
Re:Nothing to worry about
The Lion King wasn't necessarily that original either. I'm almost swayed by the arguments that it was originally a remake of Kimba, until the rights negotiations broke down.
It may be a bunch of coincidences, but it's pretty interesting:

Re:*smack*!
Yeah, you can even check the Lion King - Kimba ripoff...
-
Re:*smack*!
LMFAO Thats all i can say. Whats good for the goose
... ect Disney steals sh*t all the time "The Lion King" was a 100% rip off of "Kimba The White Lion" http://www.kimbawlion.com/rant2.htm Atlantis was a rip off of Nadia Epcot Center was stolen from Mark Waters' 1961 painting for Miniature World, based on a U.S. Air Force officer's concept, "Finding Nemo" was a straight up rip off of "Finding Nero" a french animated film Plus there are lawsuits (try google) against them for Monsters Inc. , The Pirates of the Caribbean , to name a few. Not to mention this crap they keep pulling "BUY CINDERELLA NOW ...LAST TIME ON DVD...IF YOU DONT GET IT NOW YOU NEVER WILL.....WHAT KIND OF PARENT ARE YOU TO NOT WANT YOUR LITTLE GIRL TO WATCH THIS CLASSIC....HURRY TIMES RUNNING OUT." Or the fact that Steamboat Willy and alot of the older Disney stuff SHOULD be in public domain by now. Personaly I could give a Rats a$$ about steambaot willy (bad pun sorry) but by paying off lawmakers so they can make a few extra bucks of off micky (instead of thinking of something new) we all suffer becasue the public domain suffers If Walt Disney were alive today do you know what he'd say???? LET ME THE HELL OUT !! ITS COLD IN HERE then hed see what they have done with his magical ideas and kill himself -
Re:Good to know it's not just the USA
Hmm...someone suing Random House to cash in on a successful author. And the wave of IP lawsuits just gets bigger and bigger.
I hope that sooner or later, if you can pull off these sorts of claims, someone's going to try for something a little bit more solid, Disney will get screwed, and we'll see a reverse Bono copyright extension.
Maybe. -
Re:Not hard to see why....
Can you guys spot the trend too?
You mean *other* than that the movies in this list made by Disney are almost all retellings of public-domain stories (yes, public domain -- that awful fate of stories that Disney tries to help Congress save their own content from)? Well, aside from the one that they just outright stole, of course. -
Disney's dirty laundry
That film is great, and completely blows away most of their other recent films for sheer style, verve and originality --- I reckon it's better than The Lion King, which suffered rather from the Disney over-earnestness.
It's not very hard to improve on The Lion King for originality.
The sad thing is that it's "okay" for Disney to swipe someone's work to make hundreds of millions of dollars.
But if you swipe a copy of a Disney movie...well, then Disney needs every ounce of legislative support it can *get* from Congress to squash you. After all, you're preventing *creative artists from getting their dues*. -
The Lion King and Kimba
It never occured to me that all those fairy tales they turned into movies were public domain. I always wondered who they paid to get the legal rights to all that material. Obviously, no one. Mouse ear wearing bastards.
Oh, it's much, much worse than that.
When Disney swipes content to make masses of money, it's just fine.
If you swipe Disney's content, it's a social-fabric-threatening disaster. -
Re:Isn't it the other way around?
Disney couldn't milk the Lion King forever
Not to mention it doesn't look like the Lion King was Disney's corps. idea to start with:

Re:Save Disney Error: The Lion KingAs for the plot similarities, Disney claims that they're all cliches anyway - the ex-Disney guy quoted in the Straight Dope article you linked to points out, quite correctly, that most of them appear in Hamlet.
It's not quite as cut and dry as Disney makes it sound.
Let's just say that it is not at all obvious that Disney plagiarised Kimba.
It's painfully obvious.

Re:Animators won't save Disney...What happened in the 40's aside, Lion King and Aladdin were both largely responsible for entering the field I'm in now
You mean Jungle Emperor, which was shown on NBC in the 60's? Yeah, good show!

Sorry...that didn't work.

"Lion King" (which was not originally planned to be such a big hit!)
The Lion King wasn't planned to be a big hit but it was, of course it wasn't really their movie at all, just a prettier version of someone elses, likely.

There's a simpler way of restoring old animations.

Re:In other news...
The problem is that The Lion King is, at most, 15% original, see here for screenshot & poster comparisons...
-
Re:In other news...
The Lion King was based off of some Japanese cartoon.
http://www.kimbawlion.com/rant2.htm -
Re:Disney has to be scared.
Some also think the Lion King is a uncredited remake of Kimba the White Lion.
-
Don't forget "Lion King" = "Kimba the White Lion"?
Yup, Lion King is actally a rip-off too.
They compied almost all from (in the asian are popular and well-known) Tezuka's "Kimba the White Lion"
That alone would not be that bad, but Disney simply refuses to acknowledge the deed. A simple "based upon the works of" or "inspired by" would have acknowledged the original creators work, and cost Disney only about... nothing.

Re:Bah!!!
More likely, he's referring to the fact that The Lion King is almost entirely ripped-off from a 60s Japanese TV cartoon called "Kimba the White Lion." (Even the name Simba sounds like the name of the hero from the Japanese series!)
See this page for more details about this.
To my knowledge, Mulan is 'in the clear' copyright wise, but The Lion King is obviously in violation. -
Re:Blame Eisner!
Further than that, even. Simba was originally white, and has been referred to at least once by Disney employees as Kimba. Furthermore, one of the Disney animators apparently wore a home-made Kimba/Leo costume to a Disney party and one of the voice actors originally thought that he was being cast in a remake of the Jungle Emperor/Kimba television series. There's quite a bit of evidence that they were fully familiar with Jungle Emperor. There's a good article about this on KimbaWLion.com.

Big Companies Suck on Copyrights
I hope that WW wins this case, as it is not the first time that a large company has ripped someone off.
What's ironic to me is that Sony, like Disney, really wants to prevent works from entering the public domain and will vigorously defend their copyrights but seem to have no problem with stealing copyright material or using material in the public domain. It is just sad. -

Plagiarism or infringement?
Here's another case of Disney plagiarism or infringement, but there are others too:

Any lawsuits against Disney can be expensive.
