Re:USA = China-Lite
So when an Al Qaeda "representative" believed to be in Baghdad before the war removes the head of a US citizen and releases the video on the internet in "protest" of the U.S. occupation.... that isn't proof?
Well, considering this "representative" was, according to the US government, either missing a leg and dead...probably not. How can you kneel down to cut off a guy's head if you have no left leg?
Read this and start doubting.
Besides, even if he was in Iraq after the war is no "proof" that he was in Iraq before the war, or that he was connected with Saddam in any way. -

Because that's not how slashdot works.
There ARE sites that allow you to moderate the top level stories. Kuro5hin comes to mind. I believe there's a public-voting version of Metafilter as well.
However those sites just somehow haven't wound up being as popular as Slashdot. Go figure. So did Slashdot just get lucky, or is Slashdot actually doing something right? -

Microsoft and Legal BSD code
From ESR's journal: The point is this: Microsoft (legally) took BSD code, and the only way we know about it is through behavioural analysis.
I call Bullshit:
http://www.kuro5hin.org/comments/2004/2/15/71552/
7 795/98#98To quote the poster for those of you too lazy to click:
So how can I be so sure about that Microsoft is using BSD licensed code? Well, the BSD license(s) require that the copyright holder is credited in documentation provided with binary distributions of the code. In their release notes for their Windows XP operating system, Microsoft credits a bunch of well-known copyright holders of open source products. It contains credits not only to the University of California at Berkeley, but also companies such as Hewlett-Packard and to individuals such as Luigi Rizzo and Phil Karn.
ESR, If you're going to be a proper advocate for free source, please be correct about the information you post. Otherwise, you're not much better than Tocqueville in that regard.

Re:GoodGNAA Press release:
GNAA claims responsibility for kidnap of Olsen Twins
By Gary Niger
Lindon, Utah - GNAA (Gay Nigger Association of America) this afternoon announced one of their loyal members was
responsible for kidnapping the twins inside a popular New York Club, Vudu Lounge (Websites).
In a shocking announcement this afternoon, GNAA representative rkz revealed that he was the mistery gunman who penetrated high-security defenses of the Vudu Lounge and injected viral gay nigger seed deep inside the Olsen Twins, was indeed a full-time GNAA member.
"This is serious," rkz began. This is a first event of such magnitude since GNAA opened its doors to new members in 1996.
Until now, we were gathering new members by announcing our group information on a popular troll website,
slashdot.org, but this is a whole new era. By injecting our holy gay nigger seed right
into human females, we will be able to immediately collect thousands of members. "Make the most of the next six weeks," he added. "We will grow in numbers more than you can possibly imagine".
Insertion of the GNAA collecting penis into their tight little vaginas came right between the consideration of Justin Timberlake to buy out
the entire early saturday morning disney entertainment show's cast, and will most likely positively affect the decision. By adding all the gay niggers
working for Timberlake with the gay niggers developing Mac OS X kernel source, GNAA will be all-powerful and will begin plotting
our next plans to penetrate "backdoors" into the next favorite teen pop star Kelly Osborne.

Re:Scoop? Slashcode?
They're not considered because for personal blogs they are probably more trouble than they're worth. I manage The Oceana Network, a group blog on global efforts to defend the oceans, for my employer, Oceana. (Disclaimer: the opinions expressed here are mine alone and not those of Oceana, yadda yadda.) The Network is based on Scoop.
For a blog like ours, that handles posts from a large group of authors and that needs to be able to support very long discussions, Scoop is fantastic. Give it an inexpensive Linux/BSD box all to itself and it is a very, very nice and flexible online community platform.
However, if you fit the profile of the typical single-author blog author, installing Scoop probably isn't for you. It's a tricky process, requiring "now edit your httpd.conf"-type steps that are just not realistic to expect from someone on a virtual hosting setup. (Not to say that it can't be done -- just that it's not realistic to expect many people to do it.)
And Scoop's primary benefit -- its very nice moderated comment system -- is wasted on a personal blog, where no post will ever get more than a few comments. (I know that ours doesn't have that many yet either, but we've only been up and running for a couple of weeks... give us time
:-) )For those users, MT, WordPress, etc. are much better solutions -- easier installs, and just enough features to be useful without overcomplicating things.
If your blogging ambitions are grander than a simple personal site, though, Scoop is great -- definitely check it out if you haven't already.

Scoop? Slashcode?
I'm a little surprised that Scoop and Slashcode aren't being considered for blogging software. They're a little complex maybe, but they've been used for blogging pretty successfully. For example: DailyKos is a pretty successful 'blog, and it does very well on Scoop (which runs Kuro5hin). Beastbay used to run Slashcode.

relative prices
This article about economics touches an interesting point of view of exactly this situation, prices of services and products can be expressed no only in monetary prices (absolute price) but also in relative price, wich is exactly this case.
The price of fixing a computer and freeing it of spyware can be expressed in chiropractice sessions, turning this into a normal business transaction where both of them benefit.
After all, barter is the oldest way of trading goods. -
Re:Documentary? You are giving K5 way more credit than it deserves. Lately it is just as bad as slashdot. Look at the comments in the recent Asperger Syndrome article. A large percentage of the regulars making complete asses of themselves.
Admittedly this is worse than normal since the person who wrote the article lacks the skills (naturally) to adequately describe the condition, but the people commenting on it still have no clue what they are ranting about in a very knee-jerk black and white way.

Actual method of Milgram Obedience Study...
Following is a summary of the Milgram study to clarify misinformation in the parent post; a full explanation can be found in The Perils of Obedience, penned by Stanley Milgram. Additionally, a participant in the original experiment writes his personal account here; other discussion abounds.
The goal of Milgram's research was to see how people reacted to an authority figure telling them to administer electric shocks to a victim in the next room which would then protest in varying degrees depending on the amount of shock (actually a tape recording). These shocks were to be given when the 'subject' misperformed a simple memory task. With each wrong answer, the voltage of the shock was increased, starting at 14 volts ranging to 450 at the high end. The switches were labeled in groups of four, starting with 'slight shock' and the final two switches marked merely with 'XXX'.
The responses given by the 'subject' (who mentions his heart condition at some point) are: a grunt at 45 volts, loud complaining at 120v, an agonized scream at 285v, then eventually silence in response to the highest levels.
If the participant giving the shocks complained, the experimenter (Played by a tall, deep-voiced man dressed very scientist-y) as the authority figure told them to continue. Depending on the number of times a participant complained, they were told something else by the experimenter. These were:
'the experiment requires that you continue'
'it is essential that we continue'
'you have no other choice'
If the participant refused to continue after the final imperative, the experiment was halted. Milgram had predicted that only 4% of the participants would reach the 300 volt mark, and only 1 in 1000 would deliver the highest shock possible.
A full 25 of the 40 participants delivered the full range of shock. The experimenter halted the session the third time a 450 volt shock was delivered. This result generalizes across race, sex, country of origin and social status. Many of the participants did show signs of extreme stress towards the end of the experiment (clenching fists, laughter, squinting, sweating). Many people allege that there were long term effects (a la Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), though no one seems able to cite these cases. Many of the people in their short-term responses reported that they felt that overall it was a positive experience in which they could learn about themselves. Of course, that could just be a coping strategy to help deal with the trauma. People are built mentally tough, it is a rare person that would have severe long-term effects from this one isolated experiment. -

Preaching to the choir.
For the K5 members out there, there are more details here--apparently the licensing structure is considered a bit outlandish (for what used to be a free product), perhaps to push their (cheaper) blog webhosting services. But for those outside the "Blogosphere", this will only lead to momentary head-scratching, as to what these crazy kids are talking about now.
Personally, I've been spoiled by /. and K5--I can't stand discussion forums that don't at least have nested comments and a few other basic refinements, and it's even better if they have sane implementations (that don't involve doing O(n) SQL queries recursively to build the list of comments, for example) -

Western Civilization Is the Walking DeadOutsourcing is, indeed, a "Bogeyman" but not because, as the article claims, the problems are fabrications of disgruntled spoiled brats and pandering politicians and press.
The problems are real -- and are far far worse than anyone is willing to admit. "Outsourcing" is merely a symptom. Like the first purple patch appearing on the skin of an airline attendant who frequents gay bath-houses in the early 1980s, the worst is yet to come.
Western civilization is destined to become a museum piece. The fundamental problem is with the way Western Civilization has decided to monetize clan structures, raising the floor on the cost of living, while it takes the deracinated clans and moves them into a pseudo-clan identity via national defense and police protection of monetized assets. Western civilization is now addicted to this con-game and can't allow people to reconstitute their clan structures lest they realize how horrendous the crime has been committed against them, and through them in their dracinated state, others around the world. So the only hope Western civilization has is to go all the way to a single tax on net assets or something similar. Of course, the con of the present situation is that wealthy people claim that they're creating the wealth when in fact they're sucking the lives out of young families from which they draw their soldiers and policemen to protect their assets. Charming charming folks... so charming many if not most have charmed themselves into a state where they actually believe their own material. If so, there is no hope for Western civilization. However, if they merely would stop sapping the life from the planet and live among others -- keeping the wealth they've ill-gotten but paying the costs of its maintanence -- they might be able to stave off hell-on-earth for themselves and their posterity (not to mention the rest of us life forms around them since our "bodies are in vain" according to their beliefs -- we don't count).
