  1. Re:This is your DRIVE on BAD Firmware on Upgrade Your DVD Writer to Double Layer -- Maybe · · Score: 1
Having two possible outcomes (broken drive, double layer drive) does not necessarily imply a 50-50 chance in the slightest.

That's like saying gee I should play the powerball today, I have a 50-50 chance of winning since my choices are Play/Not Play. More likely you have what like a .00000000001% chance of winning, which is what I'd probably say your chances of some "magic" firmware actually working to provide extra functionality.

... encompassing infinity fixes that problem. As proof, consider: If God were defined as an omniscient, omnipotent object, then it's provable that it exists - it would be the Universe, which, by construction, is omnipotent and omniscient. Omniscient implies knowing all that is knowable, and omnipotent implies capable of all that is capable, which is strictly true for the Universe. ...
I disagree with you on a few points. Defining god as the universe sounds kind of neat, but it doesn't really work on a few levels. First, there are many in the scientific community who believe the the universe is very large, but still finite.

The universe is omnipotent/omnipresent? Ok I'll concede that, since the universe is basically everywhere.

Omniscient? Now that's a stretch. If you took a mathematical definition of universe, and say that it is the superset of everything, then yes it would contain things like 'knowledge'. However, there is more to omniscience than calling something a set of all knowledge. When we use that word, we typically thing of a living being (most cases god), not just naming a set and saying that set knows everything. The set doesn't 'know' anything at all, we just said we defined it as such.

Yes you're exactly right. Who cares if you have to reinstall a few apps or the whole OS, the important part is the DATA.

For a lot of people thats just a rm -fr ~ which is really easy to do. The only easy way to fix this, albeit a huge pain in the ass, would be to create another account with no priveledges when you run something dubious. But I think laziness would win out eventually :)

This might be kind of funny if its a friend of yours, but seriously folks, is this really front page material for slashdot? I love this site, I truly do, but please editors at least have some standards for what gets on the front page.

Okay, I'll bite. I'm non-American, I watch South Park, and I haven't picked up on any political bias or message or whatever.

There are many episodes to choose from. Consider the most recent one, Goobacks. Immigrants from the future flock into the town in huge numbers, and start taking all the jobs in the town, because they work for very cheap wages. The immigrants retain their own language, so the school is forced to teach their future-speak, as they won't learn the local language. Eventually most of the town is infuriated that these "Goobacks" (does that sound familiar to any racial slurs you know? thought so) have taken over their town, and that they dont deserve it. So yea, I think thats a good example of a political message in south park, regarding immigration.

Some people are beyond help it seems...and not for just and OS install either, hehe.
Actually, sometimes that can help, as weird as that may sound. I read this one time on /. and I absolutely agree. If you're nice and say hello I don't know how to use X in linux, please help me, then you might get an answer within the next hour after being told to look through all sorts of documentation. On the other hand, if you say "linux is a stupid piece of crap and can't do X, windows can do that EASILY", then you get about ten people yelling at you each telling you exactly what command to type and it works flawlessly :)
