Wait a secpnd here
I see no reference whatsoever to Linuxone! I always thought LinuxOne(TM) was working to become the highest rated supplier of Linux solutions based on packaging, support, and product capabilities in the global market
Ok, I'm being silly. I need more coffee
-
i really love this company
I mean, you just can't get better comedy than this.
from their site:
list of device drivers supported by LinuxOne OS
[snip]
Enhanced IDE/MFM/RLL disk/cdrom/tape/floppy support
Old hard disk (MFM/RLL/IDE) driver
Include IDE/ATA-2 disk support
Include IDE/ATAPI cdrom support
Include IDE/ATAPI tape support
Include IDE/ATAPI floppy support
bwahhahahah.
i can just see it now.
root:/usr/src/linux# echo `yes|make config` > /home/httpd/htdocs/supported_devices.html
and (one of) the really funny thing(s) is that they must've used something like kernel version 2.2.5 b/c it's missing some stuff that's been in 2.2 for a *long* time...
I think what this company is actually trying to merge with is annonymity..
-
Re:International
Interesting; china.linuxone.net has a LinuxOne-modifed Apache install message similiar to the one found on RedHat. The HTTP headers, however (see here or here) report RH, presumably because LinuxOne forgot to change them...
;o) -
Oooh, they're looking for peopleHere's an idea: A job!. So instead of whining about how terrible they are, I could get in there and show them how to improve things.
Yah, that'll work.

Phantom companies, etc.
My sentiments are with the rest of you in saying that these people are probably either out to make a quick buck or a front for a more nefarious orgainization. However, they allegedly have a d/l able version of their distro. But I even doubt this is real, because I've tried connecting to the servers listed, and I get no response, and this is before I'd imagine the rampaging hoards got around to it.
-
Re:New project
LinuxONE lite, at least in theory, does this. I haven't been able to connect to their webserver lately, though, so I couldn't tell you what the status of that is, nor can I download and test it.
You mean these guys ? Bwahahahaha! They've been exposed as a stock-IPO scam with only the barest attempt at a product. How could anyone read Slashdot and miss all the articles about LinuxOne?

News Release from Microsoft.Due to the recent news leak, our stock has dropped over 5% in one day. Recent studies have determined that properly repairing the core structure of our software will be close to impossible. However, this does not mean that we will be giving up.
Windows 2004, to be released in Q3 2005, will have a new and improved core. This core has been heavily tested. Our acquisitions department has been looking at the proper target and we feel the time is right to change our market focus.
In related news, Microsoft is looking for a new graphic artist who can properly draw a pentagram.

You need to
send your rant to LinuxOne's Flame Contest: Here you can tell them directly. http://www.linuxone.net/flames.html

Purpose of LinuxOne flame contest
Ugh. I just realized the purpose of the flame contest. Now when anyone who's somewhat detached from the community says "hey, I think I read someone saying something pretty bad about you guys" (like an investor), all they have to do is say:
"Oh yeah, that's a little contest we are running on our web site. Go check it out. Those crazy techies love to do this kind of stuff."
If you don't know what I'm talking about check here.
--jb -
Have you seen this?
LinuxOne is having a Flame Of the Week Contest! Here
Also check out their Keywords: Linux, LinuxOne, kernel, S.O., Distribution, Labs, Red Hat, Redhat, Caldera, OpenLinux, SuSE, S.u.s.e., applixware, news, resources, Operating, System, OS, KDE, GNOME, GNU, Server, Network, application, Penguin, Onestop, Free, Download, commerical, support
I thought they could not use copyrighted words in their key words.
LinuxOne will go down!
-Jimmy -
So you don't want flames?
http://www.linuxone.net/flames.html. Your company asks for flames? If people constantly flame you, then perhaps you need better PR, not a form for them to try and win a T-shirt.
-
Flame of the week at LinuxOneHey: checkout the LinuxOne Flame of the Week Contest!
Apparently they're trying to downplay all the crap they've been getting by publically posting it to prove they aren't afraid of it (I guess, what other reason would there be?).
-
LinuxOne changing their ways?
I just surfed over to LinuxOne's website, and it seems that they are chaning their ways. They're holding a flaming contest. Yes, every week the winning flame recives an "I flamed LinuxOne! T-shirt.
<br>
Maybe it's their way of saying "Laugh now, but we'll have the last laugh."

Re:My theory on LinuxOneDon't worry; Google won't be sending anyone there as long as nobody links to them.
Oops.
:-) But this is buried in a dynamically generated page. If they keep getting mentioned on the front page of Slashdot, we might have something to be worried about.... -
Hey, they bundle APACHE!!!From the LinuxOne website:
"LinuxOne plans to distribute the Apache server software to its customers"
Get the hell outta here! Nobody bundles Apache. How in the world do they do it? Go go LinuxOne!!
-
Re:LinuxCare != LinuxOne
That's a bad link. Also, LinuxOne's news page does not have a single title making a reference to Linuxcare. Neither is there any reference in their IPO announcement, their Power Source announcement, or their Super Com announcement.

Scary stuff.I read on the linuxone website about the agreements they are entering into.
Receives Initial Software Order For $500,000.00
It strikes me as very bad for linux. If companies are going to be spending a half a million dollars on linux, and end up getting a product like "LinuxOne OS" which, according to this review doesn't work at all, they will be very unhappy with "linux" not with linux one. And it could harm linux in extreme ways.
LinuxOne, and the others which are sure to follow, will do what noone has been able to do before, give linux a bad reputation as a buggy, useless, inferior software.
I for one am very worried.
-
Or how about...
Haddock, Salmon, Pike, Bass, Cod, Tuna
I knew this kid named Jimmy when I was growing up. Jimmy was, how shold I put it... "Special". Jimmy loved to eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. That's why I think pb & j is the appropriate smell for these guys
Nervous sweat is the smell for these guys and these guys too
For these guys it's obvious, rocket fuel.
And in the same spirit, that vomitey, greasy, sugarey, metallic smell you find near big rollercoasters for them
And the muddy, porcine smell you'd find around that prize-winning heiffer that just keeps eating and getting bigger for these freaks. Of course you know that animal is the main ingredient for the spiced ham smell that you'd find here

Explanations for the weird "O"
What is that strange symbol used as the "O" in the LinuxOne logo? According to our panel of experts, it's:
- A mangled anarchy "A" -- LinuxOne is trying to tap into the 3l337 5krIp7 k1ddi3 market.
- A highly-stylized push-up bra -- going to subliminal imagery, LinuxOne is implying their disto is "sexier" than the others.
- A red bandit mask, adopted in defiance of the people accusing LinuxOne of blatantly ripping off Red Hat's disto.
- A Chinese pictogram that captures the essence of P.T. Barnum's immortal quote, "a fool and his money are soon parted".

-
Their logo? A Modified Anarchy SymbolHave you noticed that LinuxOne's logo is a modified anarchy symbol (circle A)?
Yep, he said confidently, I'd invest everything in that IPO....
-
LinuxOne DOES have a product
See their website http://www.linuxone.net/. They do have a product. Apparently they have some sort of Linux-in-Windows shell. So much for shoddy business practices, their technology is idiotic. As far as I can see, that's not an OS, that's an emulator. It would seem that they're deceiving the public left and right. I don't like the looks of this.
-
Re:LinuxOne's second product--no shit
Well it pains me to say this but yes, in fact, before the expo (by a few weeks) I stopped by LinuxOne's website and they had announced a Mac port of their software. (Their being the key word). This was in mid-December. Now, checking their site, I see that it is still advertised though now they may actually have a product thanks to your generosity

www.mlerp.com == www.linuxone.com
nslookup www.linuxone.com
Non-authoritative answer: Name: www.mlerp.com

Oh! Have a look at it. The www.mlerp.com is even weirder than the linuxone.com, have a look. But actually, the right and correct LinuxOne site is www.linuxone.net. There's a link at the linuxone.com site, but it can't be seen if ones eyeballs are in ones anus. -

They also have a link there now that points to http://www.LinuxOne.net/.

and another DEAL announced ....
LinuxOne, Inc. Receives Initial Software Order From Supercom

Latest LinuxOne Press Release ;)
Mountain View, CA., January 5, 2000 - LinuxOne, Inc., the One Stop for LinuxTM, announced today that its CEO, Wun C. Chiou, sold the first copy of LinuxOne OS today, and signed its latest in a series of distribution contracts. The purchaser, 10-year-old William "Billy" Foster, made the purchase at 7:02 PM last night, using his parents' credit card.
"Billy," a student at Rolling Hills Elementary School, plans to burn at least 100 copies and trade them for Twinkies at lunch time. "This young entrepreneur reminds me of myself at his age, though I preferred Ho-Hos myself," states Wun C. Chiou. "Billy" added: "I was really mad at my mommy and daddy last night, so I swiped their credit card and bought something. I didn't want to get in trouble when it arrived, so I chose to order LinuxOne OS, knowing it would probably never be shipped to me. IMagine my surprise when I became part of the LinuxOne family of distributors!"
The LinuxOne Rolling Hills Elementary office is staffed by 1 employee, consisting of a General Manager. More salespersons will be hired in the next 10 days. The purpose of the office is to:
Attempt to earn additonal respect for a virtually non-existent entity in the Linux market
translate/localize LinuxOne products into elementary school lingo
circulate a newsletter for the under-12-yr-old members of the Open Source Community
Dupe would-be Linux investors into investing in a company that will take the money and run at the first chance it gets (Oops, did we say that?)
Dr. Wun C. Chiou, Sr., President of LinuxOne, Inc., stated, "We are very excited about our expansion into Rolling Hills Elementary. This represents a very significant step for our Company and, once again, demonstrates our commitment to the open-source community in schools the world over. The children are our future, and with Billy's help, they'll be taking LinuxOne OS as their OS of choice. This ensures LinuxOne OS's future dominance in the Linux market, which it has yet to penetrate."

Good, they're Y2K compliant ;)
According to their Y2K statement
...
In July 1999, we formed a committee consisting of our President, Chief Financial Officer, and a systems administrator, as part of our effort to perform a coordinated audit of:
...
Geez - those poor corporations that hired programmers to check their work - what a waste of money. All you need to verify Y2K compliance is a President, CFO, and a sys admin and observe what happens when you turn the date ahead.... Its not like components interact over time or anything -
from the OMG-we-must-stop-the-BS-now dept.Directly from their About LinuxOne page:
LinuxOne is positioned to quickly become a leading provider of Linux software.
Yeah right. Their going to out do RedHat or SuSE or Caldera? I think not.
The Company's extensions to the Linux software kernel will rapidly distinguish its products from all other available Linux software. LinuxOne intends to develop operating system and application software tailored to support a wide variety of platforms, business environments, and markets. LinuxOne has an exceptional management team that possesses the experience and proven skills necessary to quickly establish the company as one of the world's preferred providers of Linux software.
What are they going to make that Linux dosen't already do? What platform are they going to add? At the rate other companies are going, my left pinky toe will be able to run Linux
:) Great management team? Try great BS team.Robert E. Philips, B.S. Physics, BS Philosophy, MBA Marketing, and MBA Extended Edition in High Technology Management, has been a founding executive for numerous Silicon Valley startup firms. He has been responsible for business plans, proposals, collateral materials, advertising, and public relations. His technical background in hardware, software, and network technologies provides him with considerable insight into high-technology products.
And having a Bachelors in Physics and Philosophy is going to make him a good marketer? How? And whats this Extended Edition crap? Makes it sound like a car not a degree. He has been the founding executive for numerous Silicon Valley startup firms? What are they? Are they all bankrupt? Probably, thats why he went on to Linux, its a new field to try.
OK, enough of my rant, this company is a disgusting pile of bullshit and I am not going to waste any more of my time complaining about it!

Linux One ServersThey appear to have moved their web server off Red Hat. It was probably bad publicity. But two other servers in their domain (qusitis.linuxone.net and webbe.linuxone.net) appear to still be running redhat 6.0. Quistis will even bring up a telnet session. It is also very very slow, which is strange since it's their primary mail server.
I was able to telnet in to the SMTP port on Quistis and verify the users listed on their web site.
And yes, they are still being hosted on a DSL connection, as you can tell by doing a reverse lookup of their DNS. Not too impressive.
You'd think that, as "a leading-edge developer of Linux software, products and services" they'd at least be able to hire a decent server admin.

Just out of curiousity...
Does anyone know who owns www.linuxone.com? If you surt there you get the message:
This page is not here yet.
(with due credit to Transmeta in the source :) )
Linuxone has www.linuxone.net, so who's got linux.com?
Another mysterious start-up? Another soon-to-be IPO?

LinuxOne: Still getting away with GPL violation
Remember those LinuxOne jokers? Remember the charges of GPL violation, and their refusal to offer source CD's or put SRPMs on their ftp site?
They're still doing it. But they've gotten a bit more subtle. If you try to login to their "ftp site" linked from their web pages, at any hour of the day or night, you get "Sorry, too many users are using our ftp site now. Please try again later."
Now, why do I get the funny feeling that their ftpd has maximum-logins set to zero? Hmm?

A Worthwhile IPO amongst some questionable ones.VA Linux isn't the only Linux company about to IPO. The thing is, there are good Linux companies and shall we say "not so good" Linux companies. I think VA Linux will be an excellent buy, and I've laid out a few reasons for VA Linux and against another Linux company below
Good reasons to buy VA Linux:
- VA Linux are an established brand name in selling Linux-ready machines, in their own words "The Leader in Linux Servers and Workstations".
- They are effectively number one in selling a niche product.
- They have excellent products (They won Best New Hardware in the Linux Journal Editor's Choice Awards).
- Vapourware product. Only a beta available.
- Not original - based on RedHat 6.0 for Intel
- The functionality of their product LinuxLite which runs Linux off a Windows hard drive, is already within most Linux distributions just by using UMSDOS.

Re:License violations
Bruce, check this out (from http://www.linuxone.net/news/press/p ress5.html):
"LinuxOne, Inc. announced today that it has entered into a Software License Agreement with SRINET, Inc., a leading software distributor in Japan. The Agreement grants SRINET a non-exclusive right to use, sell, reproduce and distribute the Japanese and Chinese versions of "LinuxOne OS", LinuxOne's premier software product, in Japan and China."
Gee, they gave them a license to distribute a *GPLed* product. Heck, that was nice of them...
..although Dr Chiou, the CEO stated,
"LinuxOne prefers to offer an open source, secure option for workstations and servers known for its performance, stability, and security characteristics to the user community."
(same URL as above, but press2.html).
Have Mandrake said anything about this yet, given that they are supposed to have a "strategic partnership" with these people?? -

Beware!Supposedly the guys at LinuxOne are just scamming folks. There is a good article that talks LinuxOne and why you should avoid these guys. According to the article, the only Exec to own stock is the CEO, and the company expects to generate $73 million with the IPO- this from a company whose income is $0 and whose expenses are $17,000. Also (according to the above-mentioned article), the CEO is in the business of spamming (read more).
Finally, this company plans on changing the source to Linux. I quote from their web page:
The Company's extensions to the Linux software kernel will rapidly distinguish its products from all other available Linux software.
Taken from http://www.linuxone.net/companyinfo/ about.html
So what is LinuxOne out to do? Raise money and flee the country, would be my bet. Their CEO, Dr. Wun C. Chiou, Sr., has connections in China. Don't expect him to stay around in the states after he "goes public," because his "investors" are going to be fuming.

Re:Stock Symbol
Note that LINX has already been requested by LinuxOne, who seemingly will be the first IPO based soley on vapourware. I wonder if there are any rules about symbols being too similar?

Sunnyvale City Councilman involved in this sham?
Go click on the About LinuxOne on the cheesy website.
Stan Kawczynski is the Company's Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer. He also serves as Vice President of Investments for Birchtree Financial Services, Inc., a member NASD/SIPC and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Block Financial Corporation, with offices in Sunnyvale and San Rafael, California and Kansas City, Missouri. From 1993 to 1995, he was Vice President of Government Affairs, as well as the Director and Chairman of the Board of Trilogy Systems, Inc., a new business opportunities incubator company.
Now go visit the Sunnyvale City Council webpage and a certain one Mr. Stan Kawczynski's bio
PROFESSION
BK & Company, Insurance Marketing - Partner
Birchtree Financial Services, Vice President - Investments
Curious that an elected government official would be engaging in this kind of activity. True, there's nothing illegal here. But it sure smells funny...
For those of you who don't know, Sunnyvale is the "heart of Silicon Valley"[tm] (their words, not mine)

Strategic Relationship with MandrakeSoft ???????
They have an agreement with Mandrake to develop a chinese distribution in Beijing. Or so they say here.

Founder seems kind of shady
The sad opening to the LinuxOne page (once you can finally connect) was written by Dr. Wun C. Chiou, the founder. He also founded a company now known as NetUSA, whose stock is currently hovering around zero.
This sounds like a baaaaaad investment to me...
