Re:Claire Perry, way to admit to being a bad mothe
There is much evidence that contradicts such a belief.
If you actually care, you have more than the necessary resources to look it up yourself. Mine it is not to convince someone against their will that a cherished belief is wrong.
So which is it?
Read again. These statements do not contradict one another.
I happen upon you, who not only talks of evidence but suggests that there is an abundance of it, in favor of censorship
I'm sorry, where do you see support for censorship in my post? You clearly have mastered quotes, please do point it out.
I'd be lucky if I could perform a Google search on the topic without somehow lousing it up
It's called safe-search.
Your claim is fantastic. On par with claiming to have proof of evidence of God.
My claim:
it does appear that you (like many other slashdotters) regard pornography as being harmless. There is much evidence that contradicts such a belief.
A claim that evidence exists of sexually explicit material (mind you, not even having qualified what variety of pornography this would be, such as the forms directly depicting and portraying as pleasurable or erotic the violent beatings of other human beings) being something other than harmless is in your mind equivalently fantastic as the claim of having proof of God's existence? Perhaps you've simply never thought about pornography at all. I'm willing to give you the benefit of the doubt here.
Now for some links, which you also seem to enjoy very much.

Feel free to cry about the sources of some of these links. Again, I have already reasoned on the subject and seen enough evidence for me to be convinced in the direction that I am: the consumption of pornography is harmful. I do not need to prove this to myself again and I have no desire to do anything in your regard but to show that I believe what I say and am not making baseless claims, "bad bluffs." Again I will say, if you actually care about the subject there is more than enough material on the internet to show you what the esteemed medical/psychological community has found in their studies regarding pornography. I'm washing my hands of this thread. Good day sir.

Re:Claire Perry, way to admit to being a bad mothe
There is much evidence that contradicts such a belief.
If you actually care, you have more than the necessary resources to look it up yourself. Mine it is not to convince someone against their will that a cherished belief is wrong.
So which is it? Are you going to factually challenge someone's belief or backpedal from a badly played bluff because you simply don't have the cards?
I responded to you because I had just got done complaining about how much argument is taking place on this subject without a single mention of evidence. And then I happen upon you, who not only talks of evidence but suggests that there is an abundance of it, in favor of censorship — which is the windmill I happen to be tilting at today.
I mean I don't know anything about porn — I'd be lucky if I could perform a Google search on the topic without somehow lousing it up — but I strongly resist censorship. Especially when the folks doing the censoring cannot produce empirical data about what ill is being resolved by slicing up other people's access to empirical data and replacing it with falsehood.
I mean, no matter how many citations we might potentially find suggesting there is no causal link to harm, how can I find the studies you specifically claim to have that there is? Your claim is fantastic. On par with claiming to have proof of evidence of God. So imagine my disappointment when I learn you were just making it up as you went.
As to the Ad Hominem (please look that up too), If it's any help, I am sorry for suggesting you don't know the meaning of the word "poison". That was very passive-aggressive of me. I should have just flat out said it instead.
It's just that I have high expectations for people who spam promo codes, trying to make a buck convincing people that coconut oil can cure hypothyroidism. You've got to at least demonstrate knowledge of the basics, or you'll be taken about as seriously as Sarah Palin when somebody calls Bullshit on you.

So what is it? A connectivity alternative? Network replacement? 10 Gbps? Really? And I should be impressed why?
Yawn twice.
Don't worry. Like USB in the 90s, this technology will eventually become standard on PCs thanks to Apple forcing device manufacturers to support it for the Mac. And, like before, PC users won't acknowledge yet another one of Apple's contributions to computing standards. Instead, like always, there will be more outdated one-button mouse jokes.

Set up your own CA.
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=how+to+set+up+a+certificate+authority Then distribute the *organization's* cert to all the servers and clients. If you have a few clients or don't get many that fast, just do it by hand. If you have hundreds of computers or lots of turnover, you should be running central config management anyway. MIT for example distributes an MIT cert. Presto, everything on campus is protected. It's partially a question of tradeoffs: sign a cert by a CA already trusted for $$, or make your own CA and spend labor (your or users) dealing with adding the certs by hand. It's also a question of security of the CA. Perhaps some Slashdotters could share links to best practices for an internal CA.

Re:Go for it
Ever heard of a directional wave. It's not trivial but definitely possible to disable cell transmission to a single sector of a car.
Because the antenna of a cell used by a driver is always located in the vicinity of the driver's seat.
Oh, wait, that's pathetically wrong. Any car with a built-in communication system is already exempt from your brilliant suggestion. So is any hand-held cell phone with any kind of headset or hands-off capability, if it's clipped or placed anywhere in the car other than the driver's seat or console. Like the dash board in the front passenger's vicinity.
"Directional waves". Lol.
And btw, assuming you meant that first sentence as a rhetorical question, even rhetorical questions end with a question mark, don'tcha know?

Re:The scary thing
Webb has a large shield that blocks the light from the Sun, Earth, and Moon, which otherwise would heat up the telescope, and interfere with the observations. To have this work, Webb must be in an orbit where all three of these objects are in about the same direction. The answer is to put Webb in an orbit around the L2 point.

Re:Why not install Flashblock by default
Bzzzt - Wrong WRT Hulu (dunno about CNN). Flashblock does *not* break Hulu. I use it under both Win32 and Lin32 w/FFox, and watch Hulu all the time, no problems.
On my 64-bit system, when booted into Linux there is an issue - Hulu fscked something up the other day and it hasn't been working at all. This issue has _nothing_ to do with Flashblock, however; it has been widely reported by many Lin64 users. -

Re:Drupal Drupal ... Drupal. wft is Drupal?
Let me Google that for you.
Seriously, though, Drupal is one of the more popular web content management systems out there. You can think of it in the same space as Wordpress, Joomla, Plone, Alfresco (sort of), and so on. The idea behind these systems is to build web sites and manage web site content without having to hard-code everything. Each system does it differently with different focuses on specific parts of the web site content creation process. Wordpress, for example, is a moderately simple system that's popular for blog creation - though it has some extensibility, ease-of-use has always been its primary goal. Drupal, meanwhile, is sort of the "Linux" of the web site creation world, in that you can customize it via specialized modules to make it do whatever you want, but it doesn't do you a whole lot of favors right out of the gate. Joomla is probably closer to Drupal than Wordpress, Alfresco's primary goal is document management (automating workflows, permissions, etc.) so it treats web content accordingly, and I don't know enough about Plone to talk about it even remotely intelligently.
So there you go. -

Re:Slashdot Economics section
again, the Fed is expanding the money supply all the time, all the stimulus and 0% lending to banks and selling the bonds, all of this is inflation.
No, expanding the money supply is not the same as inflation. Inflation is a rise in price levels (but you don't have to take my word for it). When the money supply is expanding perfectly in sync with the level of economic activity, so that prices remain flat, that's zero inflation.
If you're going to make up your own definition of common economic terms, you're going to have a hard time discussing economics with anyone.
you SHOULD NOT be buying any widgets. You should be saving your money, the widget prices must fall.
Congratulations, you've found a delicious recipe for an even worse economy.
People don't buy widgets; widget manufacturers see reduced demand and lay off their employees; laid off employees have even less money to buy even fewer widgets; the cycle continues. That's why serious economists caution against deflation.
The household debt, well that's an excellent question - if you have a house that's falling in price to the point where it's under water (you owe more than the house is worth), leave the house. Get out of that house, leave it, don't pay.
What makes you think all debt is mortgages?
What's your prescription for all the American households who have thousands of dollars of unsecured debt? Deflation would mean they owe even more than they currently do. Should millions of families declare bankruptcy?
inflation means monetary expansion. You, not I believe that inflation is all about looking at prices.
Inflation is not at all the same as monetary expansion. I and everyone else except you believe that inflation is all about prices, because that's the standard definition of the term. That's the definition used in every textbook and by everyone who works in the field.
You seem to have made up your own definition, but that doesn't mean anyone else is required to use it.
it's not 'my own' theory, though it's completely logical, this is Austrian economics.
[...]
that's one of the ridiculous believes forced upon the people in most of the so called 'educational institutions' by the so called 'economists', which the Keynesians are most surely not.Ah yes, Austrian economics. Generally discredited, but popular among libertarians, which I guess is why you want an economics section on Slashdot -- you're far more likely to find support for those theories here than in any serious economics forum. And while you're posting about those theories, you can chuckle at the majority of economists who disagree with them, and tell yourself they're not really economists.
What's the purpose of giving money to people who are going to spend it on trinkets? Is it to pass that money to the companies?
The point is to facilitate economic exchanges. Every time you exchange money for goods, you're creating value: you and the seller are each better off. That's how an economy works.
The problem we're currently facing is that people are unwilling to make those exchanges because they're placing a high value on cash. The solution is to give them more cash so they'll be willing to trade some of it away.

Re:Poisoned DNS. . .
In practice, I suspect most people setting up a 'phishing hole' WiFi hotspot, probably don't even worry about trying to attack the SSL connections, because that requires too much foreknowledge of what sites your targets would be visiting
It all depends on how much they want to invest in their attacks. I can see easy ways of doing it that wouldn't require breaking SSL traffic at all. First, look up a wifi pineapple. If you notice, they are using a regular wifi router with a hacked firmware stuffed into a seemingly innocent object. Just take that firmware a bit further by installing a proxy server that captures the key exchange then decode the traffic. Or better yet, rig the proxy to relay everything until it hits a bank site, then cause the page to reload with a dynamic copy of it to mimic the banking site, and refuse the first and second attempts to connect. You know have basically tricked them into entering their username/account numbers and passwords into something you can easily read. They will concentrate more on trying to type the account information in correctly then noticing the page changed slightly. Allow them through the second or third time unobstructed and they will simply think they fat fingered some character as they typed.
There used to be a proof of concept code that would pretty much do just that floating on the web but a quick search turned up nothing I recognized. It basically intercepted all web requests and relayed the page/pages requested to the user as if it was hosted on the gateway device itself. I think it could even mimic some self signed security certificates but had trouble with most of them. Either way, setting it to hit originally with the right page, forcing a reload with the faked page, then allowing the real page to pass could all be controlled with software and scripts giving access to most of the important stuff.

Re:Is anyone surprised?
It is illegal for a person who is not a US citizen to own land in the United States.
You're an idiot.
Wait, let me see if I have this right... You're calling me an idiot for stating a fact? Seriously? And "supporting" your assertion with a search for foreign owned land?
Saying "foreign ownership of U.S. soil is illegal" doesn't mean people haven't sold it to foreigners, just like saying "ownership of this plant is illegal" doesn't magically remove it from the ground it is currently growing in, nor magically keep its seeds from sprouting in the next growing season.
How, exactly, does this make *me* the idiot in this discussion?
