Re:How many dB does it pump out?
What I'd like to know is how noisy the new mirror-face Power Macs are.
The really bad noise in the (old) mirrored-drive-door PowerMac G4s is the same source as in the Quicksilver 2002s. It's the dual 60mm power supply fans manufactured by Delta. You can get good results by modding the case to get rid of them or replace them. Then you can get more aggressive with the rest of your setup.Unfortunately those fans spin at constant RPM and don't respond to firmware fixes that others have remarked on -- the firmware fix is just for the mid-case variable-speed CPU fan.

Re:it's a bad idea - Nah!
Why wait for WangCo to put out that cheap knock off??? Banned? Since when has banning anything in this country stopped the forward progression of what's dangerous or cool? Exactly my fellow Slashdotians! Take a stand! Do what's best for your personal transportational needs! And with that in mind we bring you the Segway GT! A few tweaks here and a few mods there and you too can have your own GT version of this contraversial ride! 12.5 mph?!? HA! This bad boy hits a mind blowing 42 mph and is guaranteed to make your fellow pedestrians get back up off the concrete and take notice! Segway GT

Re:Chimera, yes
FWIW, SpeedChimera appears to work as advertized (i'm testing it now). It optimizes for broadband connections, and also permits control over various hidden features of Chimera like stopping animated GIF looping.
A neat feature is the "keyword" item in bookmarks. You can use it so that a single letter will bring up a site, and %s will carry arguments over -- e.g., "http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1& q=%s"
I really haven't experimented with altering Chimera because of the rate of development -- wait 15 minutes and they'll have addressed it. A couple of trivialities that might be nice are autofill and a spellchecker, but I'm not going to suggest it -- they already have plenty of advice!
-
Re:Chimera, yes
I've been using Chimera [mozilla.org] nearly exclusively for months. The Dec. 20 release (vers. 0.6 + a few features) is the nicest so far. What a development curve in the past year compared to the much older Opera and iCab!
I agree completely. Some real strides are being made by the Chimera development team. I'm using a nightly build from 01/13/03 and it's getting better feature-wise while still retaining a small footprint.
Although I haven't used Safari, I have used Konqueror and I don't like the feel of the way things are rendered, not to mention the dodgy output.
FWIW, there are a couple programs I've seen on Version Tracker that deal with this. One is Safari Masks and the other is SafariNoBrush. And because I got a pile of links, here's one to a Chimera theme program called ChimerIcon which not only themes, but helps to enable an Image Blocking feature with it's own preference pane. -
Re:Chimera, yes
That's really interesting, because I found the two browsers to run about the same speed, launch and rendering -- in both cases, very good. I wonder if the difference is perception, hardware, link performance (cable modem here), type of page content, something else....
Other folks have a variety of impressions. If I felt Chimera was slow, I would drop it; life's too short to be waiting on a computer....
I haven't tried this -- Speed Chimera.
I wonder what Chimera's future is? They did such a nice job is so little time. I'll keep fiddling with them all.
BTW, Chimera has a fair number of undocumented features, like the keywords in the bookmarks. If you back a bookmark for Google like this "http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1& q=%s" and set the keyword to g, then entering "g keyword" in the location bar does the search. Of course you make this do other tricks, too. (Well, I think it's neat. :) -
Re:Unfortunately still no tabsSkimming your linked post (sorry, will read it in more detail after this), I don't think we're describing quite the same thing here. What I'm referring to as trays should more accurately have been referred to as drawers, as that's the term that the Apple documentation seems to use. Out of habit, I use the terms 'tray' and 'drawer' more or less interchangeably, but I'm realizing now that searching for 'tray' interface elements isn't turning up many hits, so maybe this usage isn't as standard or common as I thought.
In any case, in the Aqua interface, trays are a specific & unambiguous interface style that for whatever reason hasn't been used very often so far. The best example I can think of from one of the "core" applications is Mail.app, for which there is a screenshot at Apple's site. The other big application I can think of right now is Omniweb, which uses a drawer to organize bookmarks. (I'm not an Omniweb user, so I wasn't aware of that until searching for this post
:). Of freeware apps that I use regularly, the best example I can think of is (the very slick) MacJournal, which uses two trays -- one to present a list of journals, the other to present entries within a particular journal (for example). Now that I poke around a bit, the best critical reviews of the tray interface I can find so far are this MacEdition review and this Oreillynet tutorial. (John Siracusa also wrote some excellent OSX reviews for Ars Technica, but I can't find a section that focuses on drawers in particular.)
But the authoritative reference -- which unfortunately doesn't seem to have screenshots to go along with the prose -- is the Apple MacOS X Human Interface Guidelines:
Drawers are a special window type, found only in Mac OS X. They are child windows--which slide out from a parent window--that users can open or close (show or hide) while the parent window is open. These windows should be used for tools or controls that are closely associated with the parent window and frequently accessed, but do not need to be visible all the time. For example, Mail uses a drawer to provide access to the user's mailboxes.
So while this isn't incompatible with what you're asking for, it looks to me like it's not quite the same thing. This is an existing toolkit that could be called on by any Cocoa or Carbon application, and it seems to me like this is a perfect example of where best to apply it.

Mirror of trailer
I put it up on my
.mac site Enjoy. I'm not so sure it's going to be a hit or a cult classic but, maybe worth an hour and a half or so. I've wasted plenty of my time watching other trash. -
Re:Rendezvous
You know, you're right. I'm surprised Google hasn't picked it up yet. Clicky-clicky:
http://homepage.mac.com/macdomeeu/dev/current/mod_ rendezvous/
(The eds, in their infinite wisdom, rejected my story about this yesterday. Oh, well.) -
Chimera does something similar on Mac OS X.
take a look at:
SpeedChimera
It enables "pipelining" on Chimera. I think it's the same thing, isn't it? It really makes page loading faster on my Mac, anyway. -
Re:If you were a .mac subscriber....
You're right I must admit - I am not a
.mac subscriber. I found a link to the first image (the one that the slashdot editors left in my message) on a another Mac news site but I also submitted the story with a second image which did not get published. I snooped for that one. I guess that means I have more time than money - I can spend time snooping images but I can't pay for .Mac.Either that or I have a more powerful service than
.Mac called a webhost. -
Another image!
If you're feeling observant you will notice that the title of this article promises "images" but only delivers one. You will also note that my quote is a bit odd, claiming that the image "describes" the new feature when in fact it only gives a release date. This is because my quote has been heavily edited including a reference to this additional image.
The image that was posted by slashdot has been posted everywhere but this additional image (which describes the feature in slightly more detail and which clarifies "what's going on in this image") was the reason I submitted the story to slashdot to begin with.
I guess Jakob was right - people don't READ on the web.

Re:HAS to be web feature
Being that it is just a screen shot I don't know that it is enough to say this has to be web based. The elements look differant to me than the other
.mac areas for email etc. The address area also looks quite a bit like a listview control and not necessarily html. Of course they could be giving the whole site a ui revamp to match what we see in this address book website.
On the other hand it is hard to deny that the icon in the upper right hand corner looks just like the logout icon in this screenshot for the webmail. image
Also, why would Apple put an image of a new Mac OS X feature on the mac.com site rather than the apple.com site. They resolve to the same address but are most certainly contained within differant directory structures. Or maybe it is both a new .mac web feature and a new new addressbook.app for .mac subscribers. -
Hide In Plain Sight
It's not hidden any more. It's on the
.Mac front page. -
That didn't take long, did it?From their homepage:
Well, well
... 10,000 hits an hour were just a little beyond what Mac.Com was willing to tolerate. The movies have been taken offline until an alternative host can be found. If they didn't know what a slashdotting was before, they sure as hell know now.

Re:Whether or not a library was linked...
Is that a problem? They have made source code available, after all.
