Re:Who's the bigger fool?I guess I'm safe then. It's not a pyramid scheme, it's affiliate marketing.
I spent 15 minutes signing up for this, signing up for a trial offer, immediately canceling the trial offer, and putting the link in my sig. I think it was 15 minutes of my employer's time well spent. And what's my employer going to do about it, fire me? They're already going out of business (and this started before I was hired, I was hired as a "closer")

Dear Apple fans,
Some of us are not lucky enough to own a Mac. I would very much like to experience OS X so that I can form an opinion on the system. Please help by signing and completing an offer so that I can get a free Mac mini. Thank you. -

How'd they get their Macs?
Maybe the monkees paid for their Macs. That's silly since everyone knows that you can get a Mac mini for free.

Re:but how many...1 terabit = 0.125 terabytes
1 Library of Congress = 10 terabyes = 80 terabits
1 terabit per chip
=> 1/80 Library of Congress per Chip
16.5mm x 17.5mm x 1.2mm = 346.5mm^2
Volume of VW Beetle: 7,710,952.32 mm^2
=> 22,253.83 chips per VW Beetle
=> 278.27 Libraries of Congress per VW Beetle

Re:Fine, thenThe problem is that while I might be willing to use encryption, some of my friends are not so comfortable with computers and technology. Some of them don't take the time to remove that aim.com window that pops up with the startup of the default AIM client. I somehow doubt that I could convince them to do something as complicating-sounding as encryption. Just my opinion though.

What about GAIM and Trillian? The terms of service stated information about registering with AIM, but what is their stance on using the AIM service with 3rd party clients? On another note, it says that this will affect you if you registered after February 5th 2004.. How could they change the rules now and not make the date effective as of now? Are there any open source sort of IMing protocols?

Re:What does bittorrent have to do with this? While BitTorrent has great applications for legal file distribution, the vast majority of people do not use it for that. In reality the average person using it is not too interested in downloading the latest liveCD release of Gnome 2.10. My only wish is that somehow peer to peer technology could be adapted to please both parties (eg low price downloads/direct compensation to creators). Perhaps BitTorrent could play some good in this role..
And while the invasion of an ISP by a company may seem like bad tidings for the cause of free distribution of information... the ISP kind of brought it on themselves by owning a website promoting the distribution of currently illegal downloadable material.

Re:Someone Clairy this for meI don't mean to sound harsh by correcting you, but the Voyager Probes use radioisotope thermal generators, powered by plutonium. With a mission designed to travel so far away from our tiny home, solar energy would not be reasonable for such a long distance. The probes are running out of power, however, just at a very slow rate. The plutonium's halflife is about 85 years, so that is to blame for some of the power loss. The other component is the fact that the thermal couples used to harness the power from the plutonium are degrading. The systems originally supplied 470 watts of power, but over time (in 2001) Voyager 1 had fallen to 315 watts, and Voyager 2 was down to 319 watts. While this is requiring systems to be shut down, I'd imagine that they could still maintain some basic level of usability.

A related thought for Domain Names
Since there are a relatively small number of memorable domain names, most of which are only applicable to a small physical area, I'd like to see a local-forwarding service. This system would know your physical location, or have a decent guess from your IP, and forward domain name requests (or more likely just do a HTTP redirect) to the registered "local" version.
For example, Moe's tavern in Springfield could register moestavern.springfield.usa.global, which is annoying to remember or write down. It would advertise as being at "moestavern.local", or some such. Going to "moestavern.local" would cause a database lookup for the closest appropriate site, and redirection by CNAME or HTTP redirect.
So if I was in Boston, the local dive called "Moe's" could also advertise "moestavern.local", but when browsing there I would be redirected to moestavern.boston.ma.usa.global.
Some search facility would be required, for cases when one was searching for a site in a different city.
Thoughts?

Just Trust What Apple Gave You...First of all, the mac mini is cooled passively... It is designed to dispate the heat of what stuff Apple put in there. I know the attitude might be to do it for the sake of doing it, but why ruin a perfectly good mac-mini through overheating with it, with a relatively small gain in performance. I hope people don't do this in the long run as a permanent solution.
