Re:This is YOUR fault
The strength of Linux is in it's stable and secure kernel and low-level "plumbing." The same as BSD. An OS that includes a "Windows" experience on top of this solid foundation would for teh first time attract real attention and a real user base.
Another strength of Linux is that it is open source. If someone wants to, they can take it and work as hard at usability and just-workishness as they can. Later on, their efforts get added to other efforts, and before long there is great progress. In fact, maybe you missed it (or underestimated it), but there has been a tremendous effort in making "comfortable" Linux for a long time:
http://www.ubuntulinux.com/
http://www.mandriva.com/
http://www.novell.com/products/suselinux/
I look at the usability and overall experience comparison between Ubuntu Dapper Drake and Warty Warthog, and I'm amazed.
Interestingly, even smaller, specialized distros have taken up the charge to be more friendly and accessible. For example, look up the DreamLinux distro sometime.
And if you don't think the masses will ever "smarten" up and use Linux, take a closer look at your Tivo.
http://www.tivo.com/linux/linux.asp (fair enough, it's not a desktop, but then Linux is only the kernel anyway...) -
Re:Uh huh
There's also Mandriva and Novell/Suse that offer enterprise support. A quick visit to their web page will show you that that is what they are focussing on, while the free community releases aren't really pushed at all, and are only available if you know what you are looking for. There's probably a couple other linux distros that do the same, but these are the ones i'm familiar with.

It's a pity you can't use...
...either URPMI or APT for updates, both of which are trivial and powerful to use compared with Microsoft's chaotic collactions, and have been for many years.
Such use would also make the dynamic customisation of updates much simpler and faster (and more possible at all). People who are much less control-dominated thab MS faced and solved these kinds of issues well and long ago. -

Re:Buy Old
..or you could buy new hardware that is certified for your distribution. For example, Mandriva 2006 is certified for several HP business laptops. In our company, we're using HP nc6220 and HP nx8220 models.
For example:

I guess that these laptops would work great with (K)Ubuntu also. -

What mandriva can mean for a new user
A user friendly and user oriented distro.
It is not perfect, it has flaw but they still try to improve it with end users in mind.
There is the club which can be seen as a way to support the distro and pay back for what you receive if you're not into development and contributions, but it is also a place to receive support ot to have your voice heard.
There has been time when the "voice heard" part was not obvious, but there are right now 2 paid moderators in the us forum and 1 in the french one. They are there to help users but also to make informations flow between developpers, head honchos and users.
recent example:
the one year release date comes from users, they are now arguing that 18 months support is too low for a one year release schedule, it is being debated.
kiosk, a new click to install web service was going to be only for silver users, both standard and silver complained, it will be available to standard users.
a spanish user who posted many insightfull comments in the forum and attracted attention toward its support site has seen his forums become the official spanish language forums.
I have many examples in mind, and it is true with cooker too, the development version, where some external users have a big influence on the distro itself.
The problem till now was more that this external user influence was not very obvious than that it didnt exist.
So, all in all, I would say, users would find in mandriva a distro for them and by them. You don't need to be technical to have influence over there like in most other distro.
Also, the discussion as to what will be in 2007 have started, so it's time to voice you preferences. (and contrary to what is often heard, you don't need to pay to log in in the forums or to acces the mandrivaclub.com site).

DISCLAIMER: I'm the french moderator (see above). It therefore explains both my bias and the mistakes and frenchisms in my post. -

Re:Mandriva 2006 at home
Yes it does.
It is called urpmi.
For Debian users:
urpmi is apt
rpm is dkpg
rpmdrake is synaptic
Urpmi comes both in command-line and GUI front-end. Urpmi also comes with a "WindowsUpdate-like" tool called MandrivaUpdate.
There is even an online urpmi configurator tool, where you can even select the program sources "forbidden" in the USA, as they contain pre-packaged programs and modules that will allow you to watch DVDs, have 3D acceleration with ATI and nVidia cards, and a whole bunch of programs that its legality is doubtful in USA, as well as non-free programs.
Peace! -
Yes, fix the bugs, BUT ...entire release cycle to fixing long standing bugs
Yes, it's a good idea.
But don't waste time on bugs that only affect legacy hardware.
It would also be a good idea for some effort to be spent on consolidating, corrrecting, and updating the various lists of "Hardware supported by Linux". There are lots of such lists on the web, for example:
- not to mention the distro-specific compatible hardware lists maintained for Redhat, Mandriva,Suse, and others.
We need one correct, maintained list, not dozens of nearly-correct, usually out-of-date lists. And it seems to me that the list should depend only on the kernel version, not on the distro.

Re:Which Free OS for novices?
Although if anyone does know of a Debian+KDE distro that's stable, well documented, and polished, I'm in the market.)
Ah you get the king of polished. Though you sound a little advanced for Xandros. Another alternative which may be a better fit Mandriva. -
Re:Love the PSQL interface - ##%&@ the GUIs I
Yes it was a pain that Mandriva removed postgresql from the cd-sets, but the cure is fairly simple (at least as a silver member). As root: urpmi.addmedia "club.club_x86-32_2006" https://dl.mandriva.com/rpm/club/2006.0/i586/ with hdlist.cz urpmi postgresql-server Should do the trick.

enterprise Mandriva
even Mandriva has more detail on enterprise support offerings, phone numbers for all their local offerings, and a sales phone number that you can call and ask about their offerings. I don't hear any of you guys pushing them into the enterprise.
Really? I wonder why. Mandriva has some interesting enterprise products.

See, this is where your wrong...
Mandriva/Mandrakes committed to following the GPL with all their additional software.
Of course not to be left out Novell released YaST under the GPL too.
I won't bother googling for it, but since its part of the FC development cycle I've got to imagine RHEL's system-config* set is another GPL release.
Thats 3 major configuration utilities.
Now for marketing I agree differentiation *is* important. But the under-the-hood configuration area is the wrong place to try to strut your stuff. You lose (what do I care which distro I use if I have to use vi > 50% to get stuff done anyway) your customers *still* lose and you're absolutely right 90% of the market is serving up products that are 99% the same.
What something to market? Stop fscking with distro specific configuration toolsets and work on a completely integrated DE. Give me a copy buffer that doesn't care if I'm in X, KDE or Gnome. Or better yet scrap KDE/Gnome/etc and build a good DE from scratch.
Linux and OSS in general have done so much of the footwork already. All thats missing is someone willing to make it more then the patchwork it is today.
Its time for someone to take a real risk and shift the paradigm. Is Linux a toolset or a desktop? If your a company you'd better start thinking about which you think it is. -

Re:What a moron.
But even with a name like PhotoShop you have Photo in it knowing that it has something to do with photos, it may not be clear that you can do thinge beyond modifity photos but it is better then GIMP
I don't see how PhotoShop is better than GNU Image Manipulation Program. You use GIMP because you're lazy or because you know pretty well what it is (so the "marketing" works and this silly point is irrelevant). When googling for GIMP, first thing you see is the link to the site in your language, or "GIMP - GNU Image Manipulation Program".
This topic is nothing other than a troll to try and disparage GIMP, just one more of them, there will be others, I know that.
Even with GNUs Catagories. You know it has to deal with Graphics. But on most distributions there are about 10 or so to choose from. Is it a graphic converter?, A PowerPoint like application?, A 3d Ray Tracing Program?, who knows
Let me see how stupid and uninformed you are :
- Yes it is a graphic converter
- No it is not a PowerPoint like application, and you know that these are cited in your OS documentation, and you know they are under "Office". I use Mandriva, some old docs are available there http://wwwnew.mandriva.com/en/community/users/docu mentation .
- If you know 3D Raytracing, you're pretty knowledgeable to know the GIMP and Cinepaint, despite what you try to make me believe, but you're no average Joe anymore
Most common people don't want or like trying different applications until they find the one that does the job
You're telling me people buy expensive apps like PhotoShop without even knowing what they do, without doing some research ? You believe people understand PhotoShop right away ?
I now you're comment is irrelevant, you're living in complete denial of reality.
Stop defending these bad names for these application, Change is good deal with it
We don't need to defend anything, not even stupid troll fest like this one.
For non-english people, most of these names don't mean a thing anyway. These apps don't need a change of name, as long as they do the job, that's what average joe asks of them. -
Re:adminmenu for debian/ubuntu?
Isn't YAST already open? I know Mandrake/Mandriva has a solid GPL commitment.
Honestly I find it sort of disappointing that more distro's haven't taken advantage of these open gifts we've been given. Fedora with its clunky up2date and yum solutions is a good example. Urpmi and Rpmdrake have solved the problems associated with rpm's ages ago. YAST is a strong second. -
Re:distro upgrade?Upgrading from 2005 to 2006 can be done by simply setting up the correct urpmi sources and doing a urpmi --auto-select.
No "base header rpm" (what's that?) or whatnots.
From the 2006 release notes upgrade info: the only note on upgrade is about gnome-panel, which gets uninstalled during auto upgrade. You have to urpmi gnome-panel after you've done urpmi --auto-select.
HTH.

Re:deb instead
you'll be up and running before you even get mandrake^H^H^H^Hriva iso's downloaded
Actualy, it will be faster to be up and running with Mandriva.
You can either download only one ISO image, or you can download the 12MB ISO for a network install, with fully GUI installer and all. I believe that debian netinstall ISO was around 85 MB.
This way, you can start installation after just downloading and burning an 12MB ISO.
And as for the software available for Mandriva, you have 12306 packages, plus the PLF packages.
So, right now, both Debian and Mandriva have more or less the same (very high) number of packages readily available with urpmi (CLI) / rpmdrake (GUI)

Mandriva 2006 ISO: now available + all reviews
For those who want to try this brand-new version, ISO images (CD,DVD, mini-CD and live-CD) of the 2006 have hit public FTP mirrors last week-end (note: the x86-64 version only comes as a 3-CD and mini-CD image). Tip: right after a fresh install, don't forget to apply all security and bugfixes updates if you want a secure and stable system.
Download mirrors are listed here.
All 2006 reviews have been summarized here. -
Re:why don't you..
Slightly off-topic, but..
Linux works very well as desktop OS. In our company, there is Max OS X laptops, Linux and Windows XP laptops - and all *just work*.
Secret here is choose your hardware well - I did check Mandriva hardware database before choosing my laptop. HP nc6220 is certified to work with Mandriva Linux 2006 - and suprise suprise, it works like a charm - WiFI for example.
It is not that different from Mac OS X situation: you just have to choose your hardware, dont expect every (windows) gadget out there to work with your OS of choise. -
Re:You must be kidding.
Please, compare apples to apples (no pun intended)
It would be relatively[*] the same as trying to update MS-Windows95 ... and get mad because http://update.windows.com/ is not working anymore for your MS-Windows 95.
See, both Mandrake Linux 9.0 and MS Windows 95 are "old" and unmaintained OS versions. Nevertheless, all the packaged for Mandrake 9.0 are STILL available in (at least in the principal) ftp servers, in the "old" section, for example here:
* ftp://ftp.proxad.net/pub/Distributions_Linux/Mandr ake/old/9.0
In your previous post, you said "I installed Mandrake 9 one year ago". One year ago, you had available the most current Mandrake Linux versions, that is, 10.0 and 10.1. Both versions still have their package sources found at the regular "official" section, in all of Mandrake ftp mirrors.
[*] I use Windows 95 as a comparison, as Linux develops and moves forward faster than MS-Windows. It is interesting to note that Mandrake 9.0 was released in 2002 (see http://qa.mandriva.com/twiki/bin/view/Main/Release sHistory ), and was followed by 9.1, 9.2, 10.0, 10.1, 2005LE and 2006.0 (the most current version).
Peace -
Mandrake 9 ??
Since Mandrake 9.0 there were 9.1, 9.2 (excellent), 10.0, 10.1, 10.2 AKA LE2005 (excellent) and now 2006 (looks good so far). Actually 9.0 was not good and quite broken, but since Mandriva has done a big quality effort and recent versions really rock. The installation procedure is extremely solid, features are comprehensive (more than 12,000 packages are currently provided on public FTP mirrors) and personally I love the look and feel of Mandriva.
Regarding the website, yes it changed, it's now http://www.mandriva.com/ -
Re:Network Deployment
Sure, there are several ways. Primarily as a result of large parallel computing clusters such as Beowulf type systems, there have been several ways developed to manage packages on large groups of systems.
For the longest time I Had a relatively simple shell script where I could specify the group of systems and what packages to install and it would rsh to each and install them over a network mountpoint. I could do that because this was several years ago, a parallel cluster with a very specific and known configuration, and we were talking over a 100% trusted and isolated network.
Of course nowadays on anything but a completely trusted network like I was running on, it would have to run over ssh for security. Even on a trusted network it's usually better to run ssh however there are some networks where there are actually policies that prohibit encryption within the network for various reasons I shall not go into.
Also now, you can also use some tool like Parallel URPMI which was designed for managing large groups of machines (theoretically parallel clusters but it's not limited to that) and does essentially the same thing.
