Match doesn't understand "smart"
Match.com's press release includes a hilarious "heat map listing where the smartest singles live," by mapping where Ivy League grads live. Apparently graduates of Stanford, U Chicago, CalTech, UC Berkeley, Northwestern, etc. aren't as smart. More likely, they're just not as rich and historically connected to Daddy's alma mater. http://blog.match.com/wp-conte...

Re:Is it news or isn't it?
Microsoft is a company that cannot "let go" of anything. Take
.NET for example -- it is a miserable failure that they won't let die.A few web sites that use
.NET technology:Costco - http://www.costco.com/
Crate & Barrel - http://www.crateandbarrel.com/
Home Shopping Network - http://www.hsn.com/
Buy.com - http://www.buy.com/
Dell - http://www.dell.com/
Nasdaq - http://www.nasdaq.com/
Virgin - http://www.virgin.com/
7-Eleven - http://www.7-eleven.com/
Carnival Cruise Lines - http://www.carnival.com/
L'Oreal - http://www.loreal.com/
Remax - http://www.remax.com/
Monster Jobs - http://www.monster.com/
USA Today - http://www.usatoday.com/
ComputerJobs.com - http://computerjobs.com/
Match.com - http://www.match.com/
National Health Services (UK) - http://www.nhs.uk/
CarrerBuilder.com - http://www.careerbuilder.com/
Newegg http://newegg.com/
Geico http://geico.com/
Capital One http://capitalone.com/
Zecco http://zecco.com/And that is just the tip of the iceberg.
Maybe you should tell all those sites that
.NET is a miserable failure? Or if you were just (successfully) karmawhoring, I am sorry to interrupt the circle jerk on here. -
Re:The Worlds Lost Decade
I personally run/have run many huge enterprise apps on
.NET. It's actually a pretty good platform if you know what you're doing.Don't take my word for it, though.
When I googled for what you asked to google, I found this list of sites running ASP.NET.
Costco - http://www.costco.com/
Crate & Barrel - http://www.crateandbarrel.com/
Home Shopping Network - http://www.hsn.com/
Buy.com - http://www.buy.com/
Dell - http://www.dell.com/
Nasdaq - http://www.nasdaq.com/
Virgin - http://www.virgin.com/
7-Eleven - http://www.7-eleven.com/
Carnival Cruise Lines - http://www.carnival.com/
L'Oreal - http://www.loreal.com/
The White House - http://www.whitehouse.gov/
Remax - http://www.remax.com/
Monster Jobs - http://www.monster.com/
USA Today - http://www.usatoday.com/
ComputerJobs.com - http://computerjobs.com/
Match.com - http://www.match.com/
National Health Services (UK) - http://www.nhs.uk/
CarrerBuilder.com - http://www.careerbuilder.com/
Newegg http://newegg.com/
Geico http://geico.com/
Capital One http://capitalone.com/
Zecco http://zecco.com/Maybe you should tell those sites that
.NET is a unproven technology? Or will you try to argue that these are not huge enterprise apps? Just because you want something to be true(or maybe you were just karma whoring) doesn't make it true. C# is a better language than Java, though each one has it's strengths. And even conceding your point(I don't) that Java is faster, speed is not everything. Or we would all be coding in assembly or machine code. -

Re:Why bother?
Ok, and you jump off the computer to answer the phone or take a call and she pops on for a minute to check the weather or see which store has the sale this weekend.
BTW, not all marriages are to the point of comfort that the spouse is willing to let the other spouse have secretes or accounts that they are locked out of. Besides, it doesn't even have to be like that. Suppose you were showing her something and accidentally click on the awesome bar and she see's you have been to ex-wives.com, or http://www.match.com/ or Eharmony, or some jewlry store's site or whatever. I mean it can happen right in front of you.

MatchThis might land me in jail, but I found this part of the amicus curiae brief darkly amusing:
In another example, the Electronic Frontier Foundation reports that terms of service for the popular dating site Match.com require users of either the website or the dating service to be single or separated from their spouses. See, e.g., Match.com Terms of Use Agreement, http://www.match.com/registration/membagr.aspx (âoeYou must be at least eighteen (18) years of age and single or separated from your spouse to register as a member of Match.com or use the Website.â) (last visited July 30, 2008). The brief's author has not been able to visit the site to confirm the report; because she remains happily married, doing so would be a violation of the siteâ(TM)s terms, potentially a criminal act under the interpretation of the CFAA advanced by the Government here.

Re:Saved By The Force
You can use the "I've lost my password" form on their website. The question: Does it give an "OK" response if it knows the email address - and an error if it doesn't?
Although:
(1) you need to know someone's date of birth (this is a really good idea actually).
(2) they'll receive an email saying that someone's trying to reset their password. -
Re:Thank you, Sheyenne.
Try this one.
If Google's image search is to be believed, here's her mother (Looks kinda young for her age...)
I don't think this is exactly proof of identity... -
Personal Feelings Affecting Business Decisions?
In November 2002, I posted an ad on Match. One of the pictures was of me shooting a 1911
.45 caliber pistol at the local shooting range. In my state, it's a perfectly legal activity.
Match kept removing that picture. When I inquired why, they stated that having a firearm in a photo violated their terms of service; specifically the clause about "5(d)... provides instructional information about illegal activities such as making or buying illegal weapons." And something about advocating violence, which I was not.
I pointed out that there was nothing illegal about what I was doing. I asked them to cancel my membership and for a pro-rated refund. They refused. After pressing the issue, they came up with stupid excuses like "Your photo is a profile shot. Our terms require that both eyes be visible in the photo," which is a blatant lie. I never got my money back.
Regardless of one's feelings about gun control and private gun ownership, there was nothing about my photo that violated their terms of service. They refused to admit it. I can only conclude that whoever makes such decisions are a bunch of fucking bigots who hate law abiding gun owners, and let their personal feelings get in the way of a business decision.
Of course, they had no problems being business partners with AOL (at the time), which as part of AOL-Time Warner, distributes such movies as Lethal Weapon and The Matrix. -
My Friends Limited SuccessMy friend (Match username 'lkeri') used Match.com for about a year with limited success. I think she ended up meeting about a dozen people but never really hooked up with her ideal match. The good news is she didn't get overwhelmed by psychos. I think the services do well filtering them out for your protection.
I think overall it was a good experience for casual dating, but unfortunately if you're looking for a long term relationship it's going to be a lot harder.
(note, she's got a masters degree in engineering, gainfully employed, and is an awesome athlete....Guys, what are you waiting for????)

Um...huh?
"But: do you want to meet people on the Web at all?"
Well, given that I met someone on match.com more than two years ago and that we're getting married in August, I'd say there's nothing wrong with meeting people on the web.
If it weren't for the web, I wouldn't have met my font-design mentor, Chank, despite the fact that we live in the same city. Some of my best friends on the planet, I've met through IRC and Livejournal
That said, I still don't want to have a sitatuation as describe in the article of being aware of people that are surfing the same sites I am. Especially when I'm surfing the pr0n. I mean, yeesh...talk about TMI. -
Re:Patch for freeBSD.After that, you can get your patch for a life here a date.

Re:facing social isolation and loneliness
If people weren't in front of their computers 24/7 maybe they wouldn't be isolated and lonely..
How do you expect to meet people if you don't use a computer to go to the places that have been set up for people to meet new people? -
What's worked for me...
Based on a friend's suggestion, I created an alternate e-mail address and used it to create user IDs on classmates.com and match.com and, sure enough, until I kill the ID months later, I was getting 30+ spams a day after my ISP was done with its own filtering. I wasn't being very scientific and I don't know if it was one or the other or both, but it's a place to start...

Real-Life GamingIf your wife is going to be away for a whole month and she really is coming back, you need something fairly challenging but rewarding, something that will give you a sense of accomplishment but that can be resolved within a one-month timescale.
Here's my suggestion: Try Extramarital Affair. It's great fun - no, really - the experience of a lifetime!
