Re:not that great
Why not get one of these and rewire the keys into the circuit in your typewriter keyboard to fill in the missing keys? It may not be going along with the retro look (and feel), but at least you can have close to full functionality when you need it.

Re:keyboard
Perhaps you could try the Matias Tactile Pro. Here's a review.
-
Re:KeyboardYou can also get a clone of the original, or near original, Apple keyboards, from Matias. Buying from some dealers, like Smalldog (www.smalldog.com), is cheaper though.
I use one of these new keyboards and love it.

Re:Best. (Apple) Keyboard. EVER!
This was linked up-thread, but I thought I'd repost the link here as I use one of these: Mattias TactilePro

But what's the technology inside the device?
There are several kinds of keyboards . Sadly, very few companies make mechanical switch keyboards now. Too expensive? Fuck, no, those things are great for fast typing and work flawlessly for decades!
Since the Optimus will be rather expensive no matter what... and no one wants to waste teh big bucks in something that will be ruined in two or three years of serious use... whoever makes that keyboard better make it real good - that is, to hell with those damned mushy buttons! Otherwise, serious typists should stick to Matias and Unicomp . -
Re:USB.
The Matias Tactile Pro uses Alps mechanical keyswitches, which are either the same or a variant of the mechanical switches used in the Apple Extended II keyboards.
The Extended Pro II was a beautiful keyboard - I still have two of them (I had more but gave a few away). The Tactile Pro is a little "clickier", USB (with USB hub ports and the "media keys"), and better still, it actually has all the little Mac meta-characters printed on the keys (the apple, the ©, the curly "f", etceteras).
I'm extremely pleased with this keyboard, though the | key was odd for about a week (which made it hard to :| on IRC). Now that it's broken in, it's all kind of love.
Apple *book keyboards are nice, and the keyboards they're shipping with current desktops are okay... they're still squishier than a six dollar PS/2 keyboard, though. :| -

'Clicky' keyswitches -- for Macs
I can't resist the opportunity to blatantly plug my favourite keyboard for the Mac: the Matias Tactile Pro, which has the excellent IBM-style keyswitches.

Re:Why is it not an option?
A modern "Extended". (I just use the original with an adapter.)
-
Re:Question about mac keyboards.Apple doesn't, but someone else does. Real switches.
Any USB keyboard will work. I use an ADB keyboard with a USB adapter.

Re:Originality; Apple keyboards; logitech miceIf he wants a really good keyboard, he can get the the one I use. Although I've had it for less than a year, its construction feels more rugged than the standard Apple keyboard I foolishly bought with my PowerBook or the standard Dell keyboard I used to use.
Of course, as long as we're on the subject of keyboard pr0n, I suspect no keyboard today matches the IBM Model Ms of old.
-
Re:higher quality keyboardThis keyboard offers real switches and USB in a 'modern' package.
(I've never used one -- I'm satisfied with IBM Ms, Fujitsu KB4700s, and/or Apple Extendeds when away from my Kinesis Contoured -- but they have ALPS switches so they're doubtless fine.)

Re:Apple Pro
I second this. I bought an Apple keyboard because I wanted a reasonable quality full size keyboard and was trying to save a couple of inches of desk space. I'm very happy with it.
My next keyboard is probably going to be a tactile pro or a Unicomp Type M, but that really doesn't answer your question.
