Re:Uh, the name...
Yes, the eth has degenerated (for the most part) in the mainland Nordic languages but is retained in Icelandic and Faroese. Denmark contributed a lot to this - what is spoken today in Norway is more similar to Old Danish than it is to Old Norwegian. Now, I say "for the most part" concerning the mainland languages because, for example, Elfdalian still has the eth.
Overall the mainland languages have taken on a much greater degree of continental influence than Icelandic and Faroese. Take a look at, for example, a Danish paper and click on the sections dropdown. You can probably read the majority of the section categories there, right? Now compare to an Icelandic paper.

Re:needs rebranding
I just typed it. But Slashdot simply "disappears" thorn characters, which is annoying.
Bárðarbunga is full of eye candy. I can point to abundant examples including no shortage of videos on Youtube / Vimeo.
As for pronunciation: Á is said "ow". BOWR-dthar-BOON-ka. The R is an alveolar tap or trill. If that's too hard for you, you can also call it Holuhraun (HOLE-ih-HROYN), Nornahraun (NORDN-uh-HROYN), THorbjargarhraun (THOR-Byardg-ar-HROYN), or a bunch of other names (the TH should really be a thorn, but again, Slashdot silently eats thorns). Among the many proposals for names was Holuhraunshraunshraunshraun, which was suggested because it would be fun watching foreigners try to pronounce it
;) It was never actually a serious contender, but I wrote an article poking fun at the concept on Uncyclopedia at one point ;) -
Re:Iceland, for the win
-1, Not At All Related To The Truth
People like that need to stop reading leftist blogs (full disclosure: I waver between calling myself "liberal" and "socialist") and even foreign reporting (which is sometimes almost as bad) and read the Icelandic press directly. Don't worry, there's English language sources.

Re:First Newspaper on the Web
The Icelandic morning newspaper, Morgunblaðið started their online edition in 1995 i think.
Does anyone want to top that? -
The Opera Swim...
The day after Jon S. von Tetzchner made the anouncement, one of the icelandic papers (http://www.mbl.is/) had a short interview with his mother. She was apparently stunned about his thoughtfulness, coming to visit her, but said that he could just drive as she has lived in Norway for over 17 years...

Hverastrta (Hydrothermal Vent)
Just outside the harbour og Akureyri (That is a town in the north of Iceland) divers discovered a hydrothermal vent in June of 1997. In April 1998 they found a second vent which is connected to the other with 50 meter long ridge. The second vent was much larger, ca. 60 meters high (that is approx. 200 feet). And the water coming from it is about 70 degrees centigrade.
I'm sorry to say that I've found no web page about this for you ppl to read. I found this info in an archive on a local newspaper web Morgunblaðið and an account is needed to view this, and it can only be found through the search page so I have no link to it.
