I couldn't get more than halfway through Half-Life because it was INCREDIBLY dull and had piss poor level design. I did love Half-Life 2 and the Episodes though.

You might want to try some stealth games. The Thief, Chronicles of Riddick and Hitman series were all quite good and require a different type of skill. It's fun being able to sneak around to go unnoticed or to get the drop on your enemies.

Also, Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries was released for free not too long ago. I thought it was more fun than Vengeance, but not quite as good as Mechwarrior 2 which, IMO, was the best of the MW series.

Actually this is free, as in beer. We're targeting this weekend for the free release patch. In meantime go to http://www.mektek.net/ download MTX and get the .0017 and .0018 patch. When betas are done going over .0019 update (which removes the CD requirement), you'll already be 90% of the way there. And, yes, we will continue to move this old game back into the 31st century where it belongs. Did someone say MMO? :O

Bioshock, FEAR, L4D I was too busy playing the game to actually spend much time looking at the pretty.

The fact that you don't remember the graphics being ugly means that they were, in fact, pretty. Or at least, the artists and developers successfully collaborated to provide a game world [predominantly] without offensive glitches. When it comes right down to it, that is a massively difficult task, and consists of a truly massive and complex work of absolute art. Not that I've actually played any of those games. I'm getting ready to try out Lost Planet on the 360.

And doesn't the X360 use DX9? Considering how many PC games are nothing but shitty X360 ports anymore DX11 will probably be waiting until the x720 before getting adopted.

DirectX would be dead now if not for Xbox. Bastards :( Of course, I have one, and have even bought games (well, addons for GTA IV) online. Shame on me. DX11 will come on slow just as you suggest, mostly for the reason you suggest.

Oh well, that is what MSFT gets for killing MechWarrior and turning every game company they touch into an X360 company.

Well, we all know that games often fail before hitting the shelf, but there is some hope there. I enjoyed MechAssault, but not so much that I'm not far more excited about the impending Mechwarrior IV rerelease. I have a Logitech Extreme 3D pro for my right hand, and a Cyborg 3D USB Gold for my left, and joystick mixing solutions for both Windows and Linux... And a history of riding the number one spot in the Attrition and Team Attrition rankings. Oh yeah, my spanking new GT 240 has HDMI out :D

There hasn't been a PC Mechwarrior game released in almost 8 years yet people keep playing Mechwarrior4 because of our community support at MekTek.net and other community leagues and forums dedicated to the game and series. We have become so overwhelmed with supporting the Mechwarrior community that we started building our own versions of the classic PC series (AT1:BT using the Blitz3d engine, NP using OGRE, and our MekPaks for MW4). We did produce 3 fan built expansions for MW4 through some rather creative reverse engineering.

On average our webserver costs $2000 USD depending where the economy is at, and we also have a development server which costs $1500 USD. We only ask our community to support our webserver and they always do through donations.

Do I think the community would support a Mechwarrior MMO based on a model that we proved works? SURE! With a little bit of marketing and getting the word out there we could certainly build a self-sustainable Mechwarrior MMO.

Do I think the future of gaming is dependent on this model? No. I think the future of gaming needs bigwigs to realize that the old school hackers will persist in their communities and locking out PC Game modders is a bad thing in a MMO because it is a subscription based service. Rather, I almost prefer that an MMO subscription is only required to access official game servers and download new content from the primary developer (yes the primary developer needs to provide new content).

All the primary developers for CBT and SR for the past 7-ish years are now at Catalyst Game Labs And, already, they've released around half a dozen new products in the last 4 months.

As Robotech Master pointed out, there's still MegaMek.

Heck, if you want a taste of old-school FASA Interactive, there's even an approved copy of the sub-rosa PC BattleTech that JUST became available (thanks to Virtual World and Microsoft).

If you're looking for fiction you have BattleCorps and, eventually, Holostreets.

That and the Classic BattleTech and Shadowrun communities have been alive and bustling for the better part of a decade now.
