Series guide
My guide to the six Star Trek series is below. If you've ever wanted to watch a few episodes of a series and stop there, pick some from the relevant "best of show" list. They're all independent episodes that require essentially no back story (though caring about the characters always helps), unless otherwise noted. The NxM numbers indicate season and episode.
The Original Series (TOS): quality varied wildly. Season 2 was the best; season 3 was largely weird.
* Best of show: 1x28 The City on the Edge of Forever; 2x05 Amok Time; 2x10 Mirror Mirror; 1x08 Balance of Terror.
* Worst of show: 3x06 Spock's Brain. The Animated Series (TAS): terrible for adults; decent for kids (or maybe nostalgia if you saw it as a kid). One real season.
* Best of show: 1x02 Yesteryear.
* Worst of show: 1x05 More Tribbles, More Troubles.
* Most surreal moment in all of Star Trek: Midway through 1x04 The Lorelei Signal, Scotty sings Welsh ballads while the Enterprise slowly orbits. The scene drags on for 37 seconds. The Next Generation (TNG): season 1 is terrible. 2 and 3 are hit-and-miss. 4-7 are quite good, with 6 and 7 being almost universally good.
* Best of show: 5x25 The Inner Light; 2x16 Q Who?; 3x26 The Best of Both Worlds; 6x15 Tapestry; 3x15 Yesterday's Enterprise. The series finale, 7x25 All Good Things..., is also quite good and has no "spoilers".
* Worst of show: 2x22 Shades of Grey (clip show); 2x12 The Royale; Wesley's part in 1x03 The Naked Now (also Wesley's most annoying part period).Deep Space 9 (DS9): season 1 is terrible with the notable exception of Duet. 2 is a marked improvement (for instance, Siddig learns to act). 3 and 4 are sometimes hit-and-miss. Seasons 5-7 are excellent if you like space opera.
* Best of show: 1x19 Duet; 5x06 Trials and Tribble-ations (excellent if you've seen the TOS episode!); 4x03 The Visitor; 4x08 Little Green Men--these are each essentially independent episodes. 6x19 In The Pale Moonlight, 6x06 Sacrifice of Angels, and the series finale 7x25 What You Leave Behind are all excellent as well, but they're part of the Dominion War story arc and should really be watched starting from, say, 4x26 Broken Link.
* Worst of show: 5x07 Let He Who Is Without Sin....Voyager (VOY): seasons 1 and 2 are terrible. Again it slowly amps up until 6 and 7 are pretty universally good. Lots of good 2-parters. Fun fact: Captain

Re:My advice
If you insist upon Star Trek, I'd start with TNG because Gene Roddenberry purposely made each episode a stand-alone story. According to his wife Majel he thought continuing stories alienated the viewers (because they would be lost).
A lot of people watch shows with continuing story lines now: Lost, True Blood, Breaking Bad, The Wire I think have proven this point. I recently started going through Deep Space 9 for again on Netflix, and it's incredible! I think it's now my favorite of the modern TV Treks. A broad story arc with several different conflicts, very interesting characters and extremely interesting villains -- someone could probably write a doctoral dissertation on Gul Dukat or Garak. It also features complicated political problems and intrigues, and occasionally Starfleet officers do evil things, without being possessed by a lizard alien. It's exactly the kind of show Roddenberry would never have allowed to be made.
There are also amazing gems like Little Green Men and Trials and Tribblations.
My issue with starting someone on TNG is that season three is great, but it gets soap-opera'y by season 7, with evil twin brothers, love triangles, and all the actors are so chummy it feels like a community theater show. Also several of the later episodes fall into particle-of-the-week-ism and repeat premises from earlier in the series.

Re:Progress.
What people are worried about is the unspoken "E" word in there. Evolution, that is. When an AI starts to learn for itself and starts making decisions. Specifically, decisions we don't like.
When an AI becomes Aldo, does a Nancy Reagan and just says "no".
The natural reaction of many humans would be to consider it defective and pull the plug. Software that doesn't do the task it was designed for has bugs. Stop the task, tweak the code.
But what if the software has developed a self-preservation instinct and doesn't want the plug pulled? See M-5 in Star Trek episode The Ultimate Computer.
From cogito ergo sum straight to iuguolo totus humanus is the fear.

Ah, that only works with a "red matter" black hole. You know, the kind of black hole that you can go through and come out a hundred years in the past!
You are mistaken; ejecting the WARP core is an all encompassing solution to escape any number of unfortunate circumstances one may find one's ship in while exploring the Galaxy.

Re:Designer Humans?
It's a non-standard use of the word, but actually I really have to disagree with you. Genes evolve to meet new demands in response to stimuli. The rate of directed evolution (and conservation) can be measured (and it has been) by comparing large data sets, yielding (for proteins) a ratio between synonymous and non-synonymous mutations. If anything can be considered biological devolution—besides certain Star Trek plots that actually require knowledge of information not stored in the genome (in fact, it would require time travel)—then surely it must be the random mutations inflicted upon genes that are no longer under any selection pressure; i.e. those that do not convey any evolutionary benefit.
Our genome is riddled with such material; only about 9% of the total mass of unique DNA carries information of any importance. Amongst that huge amount of nothingness are many pseudogenes (a broad term describing all sequences with proper starts and stops but aren't expressed) that correspond to functional genes in other, related species. Many animals, for example, have completely lost the ability to process certain foods simply because they didn't need them.
In the future we may very well lose a lot of capabilities to respond to pressure as a result of the absence of selection. I could see the human immune system and genes that support the musculature degrading substantially, for example, to the point that our distant descendants would be severely disadvantaged over athletes of today. This loss of capacity, when considered from the long perspective of the genome, is also a form of devolution, as the species no longer has the ability to respond to dangers as it once did; on a similarly larger scale we'd be less well-suited to handle our ever-changing world. Tens if not hundreds of millions of years of work could very go well the drain in a couple of thousand years of such stagnation.
Technically it's progress, but a cathedral is being demolished.

Re:Sci Fi Luminaries?
One episode for TNG, and one (bad) one for DS9. He didn't write the script for either.
You're talking about TNG: First Contact and DS9: Far Beyond the Stars. The DS9 one was certainly different, but I'd hardly call it bad. For instance, Memory Alpha quotes the actors who played Sisko, Quark, and Odo as calling it their favorite or one of their favorite DS9 episodes. The TNG one was certainly interesting. Maybe the writing could have been better (somehow I was never sold on the injured Riker idea; too convenient?), but the basic plot was a very good idea, and the episode is at least memorable.
But certainly "Star Trek Luminary" is pretty silly. I had never heard of him.

Re:...Or you could just not go to porn sites
Absolute bullshit. When my arthritis acts up I'd be an idiot not to take some naproxin or aspirin. Someone who is suicidal would be an idiot not to take the SSRI their doctor had prescribed.
Strawman. It's obvious the GP was talking about drugs which only fool your mind and do little/nothing to fix the cause of your suffering, not the naproxin or aspirin or SSRI that actually does.
You're the idiot for equating those things with say, a sock full of coins (if I knock you out with said sock, you no longer feel any pain and suffering, right?)
Poor blind man that you are, you refuse to believe that colors exist. What Jesus taught works. The "turn the other cheek"? I've done that several times, been punched out of my barstool, got up and continued with my beer like nothing happened, and in each incident the person who punched me felt a LOT worse the next day than they would have if I'd beaten the shit out of them, and they told me as much when profusely apologising.
That's unfalsifiable. You will never know if there could have been a better way than turning the other cheek (even if those people telling you as such, I mean, are those people god and can predict the future?), unless you could travel back in time or to a parallel dimension and relive your life differently.
You never know man. You just never know. I mean, if Picard turned the other cheek like you did on those Nausicaans, he wouldn't become the captain of the Enterprise!
Wrong. When a Christian harms another, he's required to do everything he can to right that wrong.
Again, utter bullshit. If you live like Christ taught, everyone will love you (although many with think you batshit insane).
Actually, it's the fact that religious people like to practice the first quote that they don't realize the second quote.
Most religious people think they're "righting wrongs", when it's only in their own point of view that something is wrong that needs to be corrected. This in turn pisses off people who see things differently. This is the basis for every conflict in the name of religion, when my "right" is your "wrong" and my "wrong" is your "right".
This isn't just about religions vs one another of course, but also when religion sees what science teaches being "wrong", and thus you get all the theatrics in the US about teaching creationism vs evolution.
But it doesn't have to be big major conflicts. It's also the small things. I mean, look at you: you're arguing on the Internet to defend religion... but whatever happened to your "turn the other cheek" thing?
I've been to the zoo and seen the elephant. Arguing with your assertion that elephants don't exist is an excersize in futility. The only way to resolve the dispute is for you to go to the zoo.
I don't think GP's is arguing about the existence of the elephant. GP is pointing out this elephant isn't some all wonderful all good thing, and unlike elephants in real life, this particular elephant sometimes contradict itself and don't make much sense (again, looking at you: you wouldn't do anything when a guy in real life sent you out of your stool, but you'll jump up and defend religion on the Internet from some random stranger?)

This is nothing like the Enterprise except ...
This is nothing like the Enterprise except in shape -- and it would be pointless to duplicate the shape.
And besides, in the Enterprise world, dilithium crystals (with antimatter in there somewhere) were the power source of "reality", and "ion power" was what made Scottie get all wide-eyed.
With current technology, we'd end up with a generational sublight ship. Keeping in with the Star Trek theme, this would be closer to the SS Botany Bay which according to Star Trek canon was launched only 18 years ago. Of course, that turned out horribly wrong, so maybe it's not the mission to emulate.
Joking aside, making such a ship would be very neat. But the guy needs to stop pretending that it has anything to do with Star Trek or it's Enterprise. We could call it Enterprise if we wanted, but picking that shape would be silly -- there are much more practical shapes to be had. And considering just how expensive this would be, we should be trying to make it practical rather than novel.

You know, I've always wondered why (in the original series at least) there seemed to be few, if any Indians or Chinese for that matter.

Re:Why no Indians (or Chinese?) in Star Trek?
I never read any of the "official" (or unofficial) histories but I was wondering; was a nuclear war supposed to have taken place, not between the U.S. and USSR but in Asia? Between India and China perhaps?
Memory Alpha is the closest thing to an official wiki of the star trek universe history.
http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/WWIII
Basically WW3 was between the USA and the "Eastern Coalition".
A small foot note on the Eastern Coalition page states it was:
A coalition of nations in the Far East and/or Middle East would seem to be suggested by the name of this combatant. It was later explained by Brannon Braga, in the film's audio commentary, that the ECON was at one time simply "China," but that it was changed in favor of political correctness. So basically you are correct, it was mainly the USA and China.

Hah! I was wondering if someone was going to bring up Spock's irrational behavior. To be fair, strangling Kirk in Amok Time was about as rational as irrationality can get. He fought it the entire episode, warned Kirk what might happen, etc. A few other emotional/irrational/odd Spock scenes:
* Crying in The Naked Time
* Hippy Spock in This Side of Paradise
* Spock Sings in Plato's Stepchildren -
Re:I vote for 1701-A
Apparently saucer separation has a long history of not quite making it into canon due to budget or story writing constraints.
http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Saucer_separation -
Actually... no. NCC-1701-A
From TFA:
There was to be the dining area for the shipâ(TM)s crew (where you could dine in Star Fleet comfort), and other special features.
And the one in the mockups is NCC-1701-A. Blue navigation deflector. Nacelles no longer round.
http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/USS_Enterprise_(NCC-1701-A)Also, back in 1992, latest Star Trek movie was The Undiscovered Country - featuring NCC-1701-A, which get decommissioned at the end.
Which again, would have fit in nicely with it being "exhibited" in Las Vegas. -

And there are many really bad ST episodes.
Indeed there are! I happen to have a list of my personal series-worsts right here:
* The Original Series (TOS): 3x06 Spock's Brain.
* The Animated Series (TAS): 1x05 More Tribbles, More Troubles.
* The Next Generation (TNG): 2x22 Shades of Grey (clip show); 2x12 The Royale; Wesley's part in 1x03 The Naked Now (also Wesley's most annoying part period).
* Deep Space 9 (DS9): 5x07 Let He Who Is Without Sin....
* Voyager (VOY): 2x15 Threshold. Threshold is probably the worst episode of Star Trek period. The writer later said, "Out of a hundred and some episodes, you're gonna have some stinkers! Unfortunately, that was a royal, steaming stinker."
* Enterprise (ENT): 2x11 Precious Cargo. The series finale, 4x22 These Are the Voyages..., is often deeply hated and is sometimes loved. As for Troi's sexiness, as I mentioned in another post, I'm gay and have trouble accurately judging female sexiness as it appears to straight men. It seems Troi was intended to be sexy but didn't really achieve that goal very well, at least with many (probably most) of the relevant fans.

Re:I've never had a desire to go to Vegas
Damn, you just made me realize how little men have been objectified in Star Trek compared to women. I demand equality! Chris Pine needs to go shirtless the entire next movie to help make up for it.
Women:
* At least one major character per series whose job included being sexy: Counselor Troi (TNG), Yeoman Rand and Uhura (TOS), Seven of Nine (VOY), T'Pol (ENT), and Dax (DS9)
* Orion slave girls as in TOS: The Cage and ENT: Bound (three at once there)
* Kirk's various women
* Dabo girls throughout DS9
* Numerous other women in skimpy outfits, eg. Vanessa William's character in the horrible episode DS9: Let He Who Is Without Sin..., Tasha's seduction scene in TNG: The Naked Now, Uhura's sexy dance in the movie that does not exist, ....Men:
* Trip saving the ship in his underwear in ENT: Aquisition and a few other shirtless scenes, usually with T'Pol
* Several scenes with Kirk at least partly shirtless for very little reason in TOS
* Scattered shirtlessness as in the Edo episode (also had women in skimpy outfits), the horrible DS9 episode above (brief), Sulu in The Naked Time
* (Counts negative) Leonard Nimoy shirtless on Nazi-episode-planetActually, The Naked Time reminded me of something. There's a hilarious moment at the end of the episode after McCoy develops a serum to cure everyone. He goes around the bridge injecting people, and when he gets to Kirk, for no apparent reason he grabs Kirk's shoulder and rips his shirt open before injecting him like everyone else. It's so gratuitous--I would absolutely love a brief parody of that scene in the next movie.
