Re:could have
I realize you are joking but people do "die while taking a shit" - and it have nothing to do with food intake. Here's a basic layman's description: http://www.menshealth.com/heal...

Re:Already propagating
Nope, its actually worse than that which is why Coke is trying to get ahead of the media by funding these "studies" that I put about as much faith in as RJ Reynolds studies of ecigs.
You see the diet colas kill the good bacteria while helping bad bacteria to flourish in your gut which means that if you put two otherwise healthy people side by side, have one only drink regular and the other diet? Then the one drinking diet will gain more weight and be more unhealthy overall. So you can understand why they want to get ahead of the media, I've seen more and more stories trickling out about this and I'm sure their PR dept has been keeping an eye on it and seeing its starting to catch the public eye.
So in this case the company really has no more cards to play, regular cokes are empty calories and diet cokes make you fatter, so what else can they do but spin like a top? After all the flavored water biz is already saturated and they will never make a tenth what they have selling cokes, and now that its coming out that diet is even worse? if I worked for their PR I'd do the same move, they really don't have any other moves to play.
What Coke is doing is called "Junk Science" and it is more propaganda than science. Anytime the research being funded is intended to "prove" an already predetermined conclusion rather than asking a question or testing the validity of a hypothesis with experimental evidence and peer review it should always be taken with the most intensive skepticism.

Placebo
What about the placebo effect? Eating dark chocolate makes me happy, and if I believe it's good for me, isn't it likely to have some health benefits due to this?
Plus, if I do all the things that they say will make me live longer - avoid sugar, avoid fat, get off the couch, drink my own piss - what's the point? Living longer won't be worth it if I can't do any of the things worth living for.
At least scientists have shown (possibly NSFW) that looking at breasts is good for your heart.

Re:All part of Israel's new humanitarian plan
Pseudoscience, you mean. Circumcision is not connected with cancer prevention at all. On the other hand, this is a procedure that destroys half the penile skin (it is double-layered, keep in mind), and more precisely its most erotically sensitive bits , so it's no surprise that it is clearly linked to erectile dysfunction . Oh, how about over a hundred baby deaths , every year, in the USA alone, or life-lasting psychological effects ?
As a mutilated man, I'd fully support a return to Hadrian's law: a total ban, under penalty of death. Stern, but fair!
I guess you would stop the Muslims, Jews and others who practice it. Close to a million people, n those groups.

just an fyi: The Jewish reasons for circumcision stems from a God given commandment and has to do with being closer to God and distance us humans from our animalistic tendencies. It is not about being healthy or any pseudoscience (other than the fact that its a religious commandment). And if there is medical evidence to prove that ones offspring would die from a circumcision the child is exempt from getting one.

Re:Eh, Type 2
It'd be nice if people knew what they were talking about before they started moving their fingers...
Excess calories and inactivity cause weight gain and eventually type 2 in many people. You may most certainly fully reverse this by losing the weight you gained, eating smarter and exercising more.
Carbs? Other than having a world population that is so big that its dependent on grains, roots and whatnot to feed all these people, I'm not sure why we consume carbs that require processing to be edible.
Who I find funny are people who look at a macdonalds value meal and want to crucify the meat and cheese. Its the drink, fries and bun.
For quite some time we've been told by doctors to eat margarine and transfats instead of butter and lard. We were told eggs would kill us. We've been told to eat mostly grains, root vegetables and sugar laden fruits along with considerable amounts of dairy. For quite some time we were told that cigarettes were good for you. We even had special cigarettes for asthma sufferers. I wonder how that worked out.
As a result of all of these ridiculously serious missteps, we're all fat, have coronary problems and diabetes. 75 years ago before all of this dietary "improvement" these illnesses werent anywhere near as common.
Hasnt anyone noticed how we feed cattle? We let them eat grass and whatever else they can find along with some cheap feed thats even included parts of other cows. But when they're ready to butcher, we send them to a feedlot to gain weight and fat marbling. Eating what? Grains.
Diet-wise, we're doing almost everything backwards. Not buying it? Last year I was 50lbs overweight, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, not in particularly good condition. I stopped eating most carbohydrates (but I'm not militant about it), eating mostly pasture raised eggs and meat from a local farm. I raised my exercise level slightly (like 30 minutes of walking or using a wii fit for an hour). I've now lost 43 pounds, my blood pressure is actually a little low, and my blood sugar is so low I have to sip a little orange juice once in a while to stop feeling faint.
Besides eating good foods, look for the biggest nutritional and flavor punches. Lets get off the feedlot.

Re:3 tonnes !
Don't look now, but Texas is well-represented. Corpus Christi tops the list, in fact... more like Corpus Corpulus. (I'm sure I got that wrong, latin grammar nerds may step in and school me now so long as they do it in the style of Sir John Cleese.) That's last year, ISTR reading about Houston being #1 this year. I got so fucking fat in Texas it was ridiculous. There's just bomb food everywhere and they give you more than you should eat every time, but it's so good... sigh. Anyway now I cook my own food and exercise more portion control and I'm 80 lb lighter than I was when I left Austin.
While Austin is thinner than most of Texas, there's plenty of fat people there. Don't kid yourself. (A related comment suggests Austin is different; truth is, the fat people are just ashamed to go downtown.)

Re:paper filters, excessive sitting?
I assume by your comment of "excessive sitting" you are referring to the recent study that says sitting behind a desk all day raises your chances of a fatal heart attack by 54%, independent of how much you exercise and whether you smoke.

Re:philosophical issue
No, I agree. I also think that we try too hard to push out all the natural parts of taking care of our body, and this affects the rest of our life negatively. I feel much better when I'm keeping active for example.
I read this article recently and it makes a couple of really good points about many guys thinking that being fit means having big muscles, or people thinking of exercise as a mind numbing and agonising punishment for overeating rather than something to enjoy.
I do Parkour, which is very similar to that MovNat stuff in its philosophy, seeing as they both were inspired by the teachings of George Herbert. There are a lot of great things about modern life, but most people would be happier if they got "back to the trees" a bit more often, figuratively speaking.

the Outback Steakhouse Aussie Cheese Fries with Ranch Dressing..
... fuck me, do you guys really think we Aussies eat something like that? Yikes...

Re:It's not that bad
It's not as big as it sounds. Milky Ways only have like 9 grams of fat. So this thing is like... 180 grams of fat. We'll live.
Sure, in a diabetic coma, that's about 10 ounces (280 grams) of sugar. I'd go with the Outback Steakhouse Aussie Cheese Fries with Ranch Dressing... but Chili's Awesome Blossom has more fat... the good stuff always does...
A little closer to topic, to be a cannibal doesn't this thing have to eat OTHER giant "galaxy eating" galaxies? Also, looking at the photo the galaxy in question may be large, but you have to admit it's positively glowing... -

Re:All Muscle Groups
Agreed. You need a trainer or a knowledgeable friend to teach you the basic lifts, especially the Olympic lifts (clean, snatch). It's very helpful to have a third person perspective for evaluating your form. But outside of learning the basics of form, each trainer is going to have their own routine which may or may not be well informed.
I've been lifting for many years and have tried dozens of programs. I only recently came across this book on "power training". It is the most sensible approach to lifting that I have ever seen. It focuses on functional, performance-based lifting and works all the muscles in your body as well as doing wonders for your metabolism. Having access to a gym is obviously ideal, but the author shows how many of the lifts can be done at home with a minimal amount of equipment. -
Re:Eating out
There's nothing wrong with "eating out." You just have to be smart about what you eat when you are out. I eat out almost every day of the week, sometimes twice a day, and have actually lost weight doing it. Here's a little tool to help show you ways to eat smarter when eating out. http://www.menshealth.com/eatthis/restaurants/

The Real Cause of type 2 diabetes
is overconsumption of refined carbohydrates. This causes an insulin overproduction and consequential insulin resistance and tiring of the pancreas. If type II diabetes were not caused by diet, then why does it respond so well to a low carbohydrate diet? All symptoms disappear. This indicates that it is not a permanent condition but one brought on by the sufferers own dietary habits. Home Town Pride
As a born and raised native of Fort Wayne, it's nice to see them slashdotted.
...kinda
Especially after they were ranked at the Very Bottom of Men's Health magazine's list of city intelligence in the US.
Even though I moved out as soon as I was able (to Columbus, OH [19], NYC [32], and currently Miami [94]), the place isn't so bad. There are even a few people there smart enough to read to everyone else. It's nice, storytime is. I especially liked the milk and cookies. -
