Re:Just FYIJust for fun I thought I'd take a look. I tried to watch the 80s/90s one ( rtsp://live.mobitv.com:554/96-CDMA.sdp ) but it wouldn't load--just went to 'paused' mode. For fun I went to http://live.mobitv.com/ and was greeted by a plain-vanilla RHEL/Apache2 page. Yeah, these guys run a real tight ship.
If you are a member of the general public:
I'm pretty sure it's stock because the line that says "You may now add content to the directory
The fact that you are seeing this page indicates that the website you just visited is either experiencing problems, or is undergoing routine maintenance.
If you would like to let the administrators of this website know that you've seen this page instead of the page you expected, you should send them e-mail. /var/www/html/" is dynamically generated. For fuck's sake, it even says right on the freaking page, "To prevent this page from ever being used, follow the instructions in the file /etc/httpd/conf.d/welcome.conf." Hell, you don't even have to do that much--just say rm /var/www/html/index* and then touch /var/www/html/index.html.
The good news is, even if the C&D works, the videos will still be finable via a search engine--there's no robots.txt file, either.
Anyone want a job as a web admin at mobitv.com? They'll probably have an opening soon, and evidently no experience is necessary. :-) -
Re:Lawyer fees
Methinks it would be a shame if someone were go start posting that link as comments in their blogs seeing as though you don't even need to sign up to post.

MobiTV URL
Lets see if they send slashdot a cease and desist letter, here is the MobiTV URL:
http://qtv.mobitv.com/sprintTVlive.mcd -
Slashdotted

OK maybe they're not, but they should be... -
Works on my Treo, and Quicktime
If you download the mcmd file and look at it in a text editor it's just an XML playlist file. The rtsp:// streams play fine with Quicktime on Windows/Mac, having a few problems with mplayer on linux.
The more interesting thing is if you go to the URL in a Treo browser, it launches the SprintTV application and lets you stream all of them to your phone. Hell of a lot better than $5/month/channel.

AT&T U-verse OnTheGo
AT&T has some weird thing I haven't tried out yet called U-verse OnTheGo. The idea is that their Uverse TV subscribers can access TV content over the Web.
Vaguely interesting,
-l/still waiting on their VOIP service to start up.

Live television on cell phones and wifi devices
FYI, there is a great service which can be used to view live television, called MobiTV.

There is TV for Cell-Phones Already.
Company called MobiTV http://www.mobitv.com/.
I haven't tried it yet; but they seem to support a decent number of cell-phones, nearly every carrier (in the United States), nearly 40 channels, and it's only $10 bucks a month.
Of course in order to use it you will want a high speed data connection for your cell-phone and a unlimited data plan. -
Re:Let me know when its free to use
You are assuming your phone usage is the same as everyone elses. I use my web browser all the time, I watch television on my phone, I use it for messaging, I use it to send and receive pictures, and I use the email address I setup on my carriers website as well (which I can check ans send using the web broser on the phone or any IMAP client from a PC). Unlimited internet access was included with my phone plan and on the three additional phones that share my plan. The newer plans do not include it for free but it is only an additional $15 for the first phone and $5 for each additional phone. This includes $5-$10 a month allowance for download content per month per phone (My phone television service referenced above costs me nothing extra per month).
My suggestion? When comparing cellular plans, make sure to compare EVERYTHING you plan on using. Anytime minutes are a small portion of what is available by the carriers and only used to get you in the door. -
Re:Why a new standard?
I've had Mobi-TV television channels on my Sprint cell phone for over a year now. They have about 20 channels. My phone is a little old and slow so I only get about 1-2 video frames second but the audio is not choppy. I watch it all the time to and from work when I do not have driving duty.
With my unlimited Sprint vision service (their name for mobile internet access), I get the Mobi-TV monthly service bascially for free as Sprint provides a $10 credit for download content which is what Mobi-TV costs per month. -
Get Live Television Election Covereage on MobiTV
If you have one of several Sprint or AT&T wireless phones, you can watch live MSNBC or ABC News on your mobile phone. Check out http://www.mobitv.com/. They support a range of handsets that have color screens and support J2ME applet downloads. If you have one of the supported phones you can just open the wap browser and download the latest version and start watching TV right away. Pretty damn cool.
The latest Samsung A700 handset on Sprint is particularly spiffy, running at a decent frame rate. ~6 fps for live TV and upwards of 15 fps for the clip downloads on the SprintTV clip service (A VOD service distinct from MobiTV which is the live TV product. Mobi has a better channel lineup, and its live instead of clips.) -
Re:WHY VIDEO?
Why not?
I had a subscription to MobiTV with my Sprint cell phone and used it quite often. I only cancelled because my phone was a little older and I only got roughly 1-2FPS. Even at that rate it was watchable but not worth $10/month. I currently use 1KTV with Sprint (slideshow based) but it is much cheaper, free actually as Sprint credits me up to $5/month for download content. Watching my own content on a portable device seems like the next logical step. The iPod is a personal audio player and nothing more, if you only want audio for the things you do, that is great. It should not be too hard to understand that someone way actually want to watch video also. -
Re:Been there, Done that, NTT DoCoMo FOMA
you could have looked at the links. MobiTV bills itself as the first *global* cellphone based television network.
-
Phones, maybe. Watches, no way.
Phones with TV reception are far more likely to receive mass acceptance than these wrist monstrosities. Toshiba and NEC have working models in Japan, check this WSJ review, and SprintPCS is brining MobiTV to some of its models in the U.S.

Re:Storage
In the US, we don't have to download the highlights, we can watch the while game - live.
