Re:Bah let me know when the XBox 360 breaks $200-
Gee it seems as if they didn't do DRM, lower the price of the game, they would sell more copies of it and earn more money.
But no, make it for game consoles, due to piracy, because it isn't like a mod-chip exists for game consoles and already file sharing networks are sharing over a million copies of the XBox 360 ISO files already, right? Game developers won't lose a lot of money on the game console version, will they?
:)Yeah PC gamers just became Mac gamers, and the Mac is now an Intel PC.
:)Ah well, I can still play the Civ 4 series for now. Wait until they fix all of the bugs and memory leaks in the game console version, and then the PC and Mac versions will be better debugged.

Re:Coming Soon...We'll probably just see the same thing that we did with the first XBox: a modchip with an external switch connected that can tell it to disable itself and let the original drive firmware load. There is already a modchip that will do that on its own. you can find it here http://www.modchip.com/xbox360/nme360v13order.php It's called the NME 360 v1.3
This is the description they give for it "The NME 360 v1.3 is a universal chip for all Xbox360 DVD drives. It will patch the firmware of the drive on-the-fly. The original firmware on the flash of the drive remains untouched.
The chip will recognize independently which media was inserted and switches itself to the corresponding mode. That also means you will not have to install an external switch on your Xbox 360 to put the chip off."
It will also turn the network card off when it detects a copied media so you cannot connect to xbox live. -
Re:Don't believe...You can play backups or imports on an old model PS2 via a fliptop or slide card and a set of swap discs. There's also a fliptop for the slimline PS2s.

PS2 Linux Project?
I'd like to know if the PS2 modchip alleviates the cd-r/dvd-r problem. If so, is there enough to this $350 system to make a decent little home system to play with? Is anyone working on something for the ps2 similar to the XBox Linux Project?
Geez... 15 posts and they all have to do with 'gnoogle.' *sigh* -
Drive will only read "official" PlayStation discsOne paragraph that jumped out at me:
Those interested in buying and playing around with the PS2 Linux kit should be aware of some things before getting it: Access to the PS2's DVD drive is restricted so that only official PlayStation discs can be read; and CD-Rs and DVD-R discs won't work in the drive. However, the USB ports on the PS2 are standard, so some USB external CD and DVD drive models that are supported under Linux could be used with this kit.
Too bad it can't even read CD-Rs, though I suppose there's probably a mod that would let you do that. -
Buy a Playstation 2

Remember the Mod chip?
The PS1 did NOT play standard CD-ROMs - you had to hack the unit to make your burned units work.
I'd have wagered that the PS2 would make this a little harder to do, but follow that link -- it looks EASIER.

Re:Is there a catch?
How is their Minidisc crippled? I hadn't heard of that.
Of course, that this is the same company that brought us the Music Clip MP3 player... one of those nifty devices that asks you to convert all of your MP3s to some "secure" format. Their PlayStation uses specially-formatted CDs that can't be copied. Aren't they a member of SDMI too?
For what it's worth, my ears aren't that sensitive. How many people out there are saying, "the audio quality of these CDs is really driving me to insanity, when oh when will someone come up with a better format?" -
modchip compatible?Anyone want to bet on whether this model too is modchip compatible or not?
In case anyone didn't know, Sony has released something like 10 or 15 versions of the Playstation, all of which have been able to be modified. (Modding enables playing out of region games and CDR discs).
