this looks a lot better then ascii
sketch render
blueprint render.
all MUCH BETTER then the ASCII renderer -
Textmode Quake!
Slightly OT, but while we're [sort of] on the topic, there is a Textmode Quake package available which provides an interesting idea for user interfaces.
I wonder whether this could be combined with the Doom Sysadmin Tool for a text->GUI->text->severe eyestrain session. -
Re:Finally!
Well, if you don't need a GUI, maybe somebody could hack up something like this for Real Video... Probably not all that great looking, but hey - you don't need X...

Text-mode atrocities unlimited
People are starving to death in the world, and you had time for this?!!
-
The ASCII Cam!
...the best, most ridiculous, and most redundant graphical implementation of ASCII since textmode Quake.
-
this ASCII hack does not deserve a story
they probably use aalib. big deal.
i built a scanning camera that did this using a TRS-80 (actually an Altair III converted to be compatible with the TRS-80) and some parts from radio shack in 1980 or thereabouts.
ASCII hacks are so 1990s... and besides, nothing will ever beat ASCII Quake...
yawn!!!

Re:Congrats to the developers.
Hardest to play? I'm sure this is a joke to play compared to text-mode Quake.

Re:Handspring already has much of this...
I mean, it's not like I can port Quake III for Linux to my PalmPalm cellphone.
And it's not like you would port Doom to a Digital Camera. Or who in their right mind would attempt to play Quake on a text terminal.Hey, you never know what people will try to do.

Gabe Newell using new channels for info.
Did anyone else notice Gabe Newells question regarding the targeting of the technology at broadband capable systems. Maybe TF2 is already finished and they are just waiting for everyone to get Cable/xDSL so we can play it
:)Maybe whilst they are waiting they could port it to linux ?
As a programmer who has hacked about with OpenGL and as a gamer I would like to pledge my undying allegiance to John Carmack as IMNSHO he is a genius.
Nearly as clever as these guys http://webpages.mr.net/bobz/ttyquake/ -
Re:why?You need to ask?
To quote from the Textmode Quake page, another seminal Quake achievement:
BUT WHY, DAMMIT? WHY?
If you have to ask why, you're not a member of the intended audience. Please go on about your business and accept my apologies for this distraction.

No challenge
PFfft. That's nothing. Once they port Doom to my 35mm camera--*then* I'll be impressed. (Hey, if they can do text-mode quake...)

OverkillIs Overkill by chance related to another project which produced a text-mode Quake?
You know, I've always wondered why do people want a text-mode action game, but then I recall my Cirrus Logic video card which is still humming on my 486/66 DX, and it all comes back.Ahh, the sweet memories...

Re:Thomas Jefferson on IP...but the reality in this situation is that if your Idea is of value, someone else will think of it, and eventually someone with the morals to share it, if it betters mankind.
doesn't that seem a little altruistic? let's think of some other reasons someone might share an idea:
- because they're greedy, and think they can make a profit (many things on infomercials could count under this heading; also, bank robberies)
- they'd like to prove it can be done, either for their own glory, or for the sake of the idea itself (proving fermat's last theorem?)
- they're bored, and have this idea, and just on a lark, they set it in motion (seems like most of my programming projects are examples here)
- they're insane, and fear for their bodily fluids (e.g., dr. strangelove)
of course, i've only scratched the surface, but my point is that whether or not an idea benefits humanity, and whether or not it's actually a good idea, someone somewhere will try it. and this gives us things like MAME for Digita-enable cameras and Textmode Quake...

Re:Sod text adventures :)
Actually, he means this.

Games over telnet
Can't help with descent, but here is an ASCII front end to quake. Now you can play over telnet. Enjoy.

Re:I Only Hope...
Maybe you can write some sort of a wrapper to display the movie in text. See http://webpages.mr.net/bobz/ttyquake on a similar project =)

Re: Overextended Hack Job Piece of Crap
How about giving me a browser that just does browsing? I know it's a novel concept, but why should my WEB BROWSER do Usenet and email? That's why I have slrn and mutt... I know, I know: "use lynx". But the formatting and graphics are tough to do in a tty...
Someone should write a patch for lynx to use the ascii graphics library - aalib to render web graphics as ascii text. Anyone who's missed this gem should check out ttyQuake.
:-) Or maybe not ...!Cheers

Quake in telnet?Slightly off-topic, but none the less also deeply disturbing (but for sanity rather than humanitarian reasons) is Quake in telnet!! Now I've seen everything and I'm scared...

Nuff said. -
