Can you tell me why an Operating System that claims to be better than Unix still uses drive letters to indicate hard disk devices as well as partitions, making no distinction between the two?
Can you tell me why all the Windows NT and Windows 2000 system files conform to the MSDOS 8.3 naming convention, when "there is no DOS in NT" ?
I still can't get over how much useless baggage Microsoft has dragged forward with this latest Windows NT 2000 !
I recently had a customer talk to me as I fixed her database application on her Windows pc, and she asked me if I used Windows 98, ME, or 2000. I said I didn't use Windows at all. She asked if I had an Apple. I told her I had a normal pc that didn't run Windows. (I run Slackware Linux)
She was _flabbergasted_ ! What did I mean I didn't run Windows, everyone runs Windows! Computers ARE Windows !
This is what Microsoft has done, pull the blinds over the eyes of the consumers.
NT still has this problem with high load situations.
It just crashes under high system load.
Win2000 should fix this, but 2000 is still less stable than Linux or Solaris.
Why should I have to buy a new version of Windows NT just to fix bugs that shouldn't have been there in the first place? I just don't think Micro-Soft understands this.
You mention Red Hat. Why not do a distribution specific comparison? I love Slackware. How many more times secure is Slackware? What if you build your own distro?
Unix in general is much more secure than Windows and offers multiuser capabilities, something that Microsoft chose to forget when they innovated the GUI.
I enabled hdparm -S 240 to put it to sleep after 20 mins of no activity, and was running Samba exporting 2 shares on the reiserfs partition.
The next day I rebooted with shutdown -r now.
When it came up I noticed my ftpd was freaking out about respawning too fast. The ReiserFS partition was not mounted, and gave bad superblock errors when I went to manually mount it. So I decided to reiserfsck it, since it wasn't mounted anyway. No reiserfs found.
So I fired up fdisk to see whats up. No partition found on that hard disk.
ReiserFS ate my partition.
I cannot beleive that SuSe would include something so volatile in an official release.
Not a flame, just my experience. I'm sure ReiserFS will rock once it gets Alan and Linus' approval.
Apple has already said, there will NEVER be a linux port of the current sorensen quicktime. Ever. I don't see why people use this format anyway, its much more resource hungry and buggy than anything else out there. Why not plain old mpg, or even that new hacked divx
Afaik, recorded telephone conversations are not admissable as evidence unless both parties are aware that it is in fact being recorded. This means you have to tell them you are recording. Unless of course you are the federal government, or have a court order that allows you to tap without consent (good luck).
I have a 128mb celeron 433 with Windows ME on it (or rather my stepfather does).
I have a screen shot of when I launched IE5.5 and it said " There is not enough free memory to run this program. Quit one or more programs, and then try again. "
Culpable? Why don't you try to blame Microsoft for Windows 9x/NT/2000 or thier Office suite for destroying your data or sleeping with your daughter... WHOOPS
You didn't read the EULA, Microsoft is not culpable either, and they are the major business model that BIG COMPANIES rely on. Tech support? LOL have you seen what they charge?
What the fuck is a System Administrator for anyway? Let him/her catch the segfaults _before_ they happen, or browse web pages or use IRC to get things right.
There are similar things for Windows too, you know.
I had Windows 2000 Professional running on my computer, and I print alot of stuff on my printer.
I installed SP1NETWORK.EXE (service pack 1) like a good user, and now when I print, it takes over 2 minutes per black and white page of text, whereas before service pack 1 it was fast as usual. I was already running the latest printer drivers for my model of printer - I checked their website.
When I installed SP1 I chose to save automatically so I could uninstall it if I had to. When I went to uninstall it, I got the error message "Windows will uninstall the Service Pack 1 but will not uninstall the Service Pack 1." I wish I had a screenshot of it.
Now my only option is to save to disk and print somewhere else, or follow THE USUAL MICROSOFT SOLUTION - RRR = Reboot, Reformat, Reinstall.
And I can't beleive I paid fucking money for this peice of shit.
P.S. I am having a problem with X. It crashes when i look at it wrong. I happened when I changed my Video card from my GeForce to my VooDoo3. (and it works fine with my GeForce) E-Mail if you can help please.
Now I know what that one guy's.sig means "The wheel is turning but the hampster is dead."
If you go read the book entitled Using Samba which is distributed with the latest Samba tarballs, you find out on nearly every other page on what to do with Encrypted Passwords, and how to add users so that encrypted passwords work. Using plain passwords is ok on a private secure LAN, but its just so easy to add a user to the encrypted password database.
Can you point out in the Samba documentation where they recommend turning on plain text passwords?
What about slackware? You have to configure X and your sound card to get them to work, there is no "sound wizard".
The user has to learn something in order to use it, this definately is not the kind of user that comes from a Microsoft background.

Not fully, there is a plethora of information on this.
It just crashes under high system load.

Are either of those an SSH SERVER for Windows ?

Judging by the amount of "Linux Sux" and "Win2k is better than Unix" posts, alot of the postings here are done from *.microsoft.com.
/. would post AC fqdn's, or at least the Microsoft ones.
Oh how I wish

I'm not sure that I can hold my breath for that long.
Where can I download MacOS 10 for free (legally) ?
That's right next to "Where can I download Sorensen Quicktime for Linux?"
I installed the reiserfs stuff for 2.2.17
I enabled hdparm -S 240 to put it to sleep after 20 mins of no activity, and was running Samba exporting 2 shares on the reiserfs partition.

I prefer to use the slackware boot disk, bare.i or ata66.i .

Will you stop with the damn zealotry and fud already? Go back to crying about how there are no bugs in RedHat.
Linux is not RedHat.

How many programs were open? None.
IE5.5 LAUNCHES faster than Mozilla, this is no surprise. It is also not a benchmark.
Lets put Mozilla in the Windows kernel (whoops no source) and it will launch as fast as IE5.5
Mozilla renders pages faster than IE5.5, hands down.

I don't pay money to report bugs to the manufacturer, I report bugs for free software.

How much does Microsoft pay you to troll Linux-centric forums refuting every single piece of NT "FUD" ?
If it is high, and full-time, give me a call, I can easily whore my zealous ways to the side of NT for money.

O'Reilly has made Using Samba free to read in html format, and you can download the pdf and print the fucker out.
Warning: you may have to learn something in the process, if you are not comfortable with this, please run out and buy Windows 2000.
