Re:Not quite as exciting as the headline sounded
Examples for ioquake3
Examples for XreaL
Examples for Cube 2
Examples for Irrlicht
Examples for Object-Oriented Graphics Rendering Engine
Examples for Crystal Space
Examples for Blender Game Engine
Examples for Panda3DIt's quite obvious that all of these engines are much more advanced than Darkplaces. Darkplaces doesn't even do basic stuff like HDR lighting, DOF or parallax mapping. You could reproduce most effects in Darkplaces with shaders in ioquake3, which is basically just a cleaned up id Tech 3 engine. Then there is the issue of poor performance in Darkplaces...

Re:alas poor xcom
I was waiting for someone to mention X-Com...
:)There have been a few recent commercial attempts at recreating the old X-Com feel, like Altair's UFO series (UFO: Afterlight is the most recent one), but I haven't found any that has matched that feel.
The closest to the original that I've found is the Open Source project UFO: Alien Invasion. It's still a work in progress, so bugs are going to have to be worked out, and they need to setup destructible terrain to really complete the feel. Something about the Quake 2 engine doesn't allow them to easily do this. I mean, some of my favorite moments involved sending in a blaster bomb into a house to wipe out a nest of aliens, blowing out 2-3 walls in the process...

Re:X-COM
There are other companies trying to reclaim X-Com.
Aside from the two you mentioned, take a look at -

As well as -

Re:X-Com!
Have you checked out UFO: Alien Invasion? It's "heavily inspired by the X-COM series" (and if they say "heavily" they mean it!), supports network gameplay, and is licensed under GPL. And it has no underwater missions

Re:Anything of interest developed with Q 2 source?
There is UFO: Alien Invasion which is based on Q2:

Re:It's not the specs that are important!!!
What I wish for more than anything is more XCOM games, but in the same visual style as the original
There already is.
UFO: Alien Invasion
It's open-source, based on the Quake 2 engine (3D, but not overly flashy). It also maintains the look and feel of older X-COM, but you can also view the entire battle map in 6 degrees of freedom if you so desire.
Currently, it is only a tech demo (no base building, no long-term storyline, no world map combat with ships), but things can only get better. -

Check out UFO: Alien Invasion. A new and open-source version of the original game, except with slightly better graphics. And it runs on Linux. -
