Re:HA HA HAI suspect it will be https://myspace.d0wnl0adz.com/protect.cgi, since to do anything the spammer would probably be interested in with https://d0wnl0ads.myspace.com/protect.cgi the spammer would have to control one of:
- your hosts file for
- your DNS server
- the myspace.com domain name
- or otherwise already control your computer
If any of those were true, the spammer probably wouldn't bother trying to get you to download a keylogger because he/she could already accomplish so much mischief that getting you to download something from that URL would be an utterly redundant waste of time and energy.
So your scenario seems relatively unlikely versus the spammer registering a domain name that isn't myspace.com, but that your average parent of a fifteen year old myspace user can't distinguish from an actual myspace domain name.
The same concept is why we have so many sites like http://verify.paypal.cheaprussianhosting4u.biz/acc ount-details.html, and why the people who run such sites probably succeed in stealing so much money, and it's why the site http://verify.paypal.com/account-details.html is pretty useless unless you're paypal and you've taken a much sharper turn toward the even more evil side. -

Re:HA HA HA
I almost forgot; queue the spammers with links to software download sites to allow you to monitor your children's activities. Nothing like a legit reason to download a keylogger... sheesh I can see it now. The next big virus will come disguised as a child protection monitoring software from https://d0wnl0ads.myspace.com/protect.cgi

Category #3
People who can't stand MySpace's (or for that matter Orkut's) errors and general suck, and thus scout around to find the social-networking/media sharing site that sucks least, but leave a little something behind on MySpace as a "pointer" for their herd-behaving acquaintances. (I'm in this category)

Re:Why is it so hard?
Maybe if people were given a way to make an attractive and functional MySpace page without resorting to pink twinkly "This Space Pimped With Rogers SpacePimper" graphics and thirty megs of site garbage, they'd stop pimping and start primping.
Like this?
moshi project
True, it requires more concentration than most myspace users can muster, but a slashdotter can primp to his heart's delight.

I ripped off the demoscene......and it sounds really good! See the song "Gangster SID." It's not even really a SIDTune, but an AY one. I got it from an archive of Russian AYs, I *think*. Problem is I can't remember what one, it was so long ago. I slowed it down drastically, about 50% and added a hip hop beat over it. If someone recognizes the tune, I'd love to give credit for it!
If I were Janne, I wouldn't bother trying to get $ for this, but milk it for all the publicity I could! In the music world, it's much better to be able to say, "my song was sampled by this guy" than to get a little dough. He will be able to use this as a chance to write backing music for some other hip-hop artists...for pay! Think of it as an apprenticeship.

Isn't it funny
How they sound just like every other pop punk boy band on the major labels for the last decade.
But they're not bad. That song "Hold" is pretty catchy.
http://www.myspace.com/koopa (easy place to hear their stuff)
Not a bad independent achievement though. Hopefully other genres will follow. -
Re:Why is this modded +5? Check the link.
I said the account's name - not the personalized URL. Someone else grabbed that URL.
The URL for the account in question is http://www.myspace.com/dantravels -
Why is this modded +5? Check the link. For a couple of those months the account's name has been the uncensored version of "F*** MySpace" and its profile has been a description of how broken MySpace is in this regard.
I call bullshit.

Re:Use a common portal then...
Personally, I use myspace and facebook. They're great tools to keep in touch with your friends who you might not hang out with every day, but still would like to communicate with on a regular basis. You can post photos of what you've been up to, how your life is going, etc. Imagine a "christmas card" that's ever changing and instantaneous (also year round and much more personal
:P). Also, many people are tired of the junk they get in their typical email boxes (alot of them use yahoo, hotmail, etc) so myspace is a good place to talk w/ friends w/o having to worry about spam. Also, you can meet people with the seemingly safe barrier of the internet protecting your self esteem and self security. You can see what people look like too before you meet them, so checking out that hot girl from someone's class, or getting to know people before/after a party you attend is insanely easy. "What's your myspace?" "oh mine's myspace.com/whatever" Also, bands give theirs out during shows, and you can hear all different kinds of music that you might not have experienced before, which usually gets pre-approval from friends (if they've got it on their page, they especially like it).
Basically, these networks are for you to keep a large circle of friends without much effort. Especially when people have internet access for a good part of their day, sites as this can become both fun and addicting. Imagine stamp collecting for the new century. One important thing to note is that it isn't for "technocrats", it's for relative newbies and provides an EXCELLENT place for people with little to no experience with web technologies and the inner workings of websites to gain not only first hand exposure, but, in several cases, first hand experience dealing with code.
Also, keep in mind, at many times during a young adult's life they seek to impress their peers as opposed to their parents or other authority figures. This is an instant gratification system where you can get immediate feedback for your comments and opinions. Looks like a different version of slashdot's own comment system to me. Instead of commenting inanely about world events and technology, they/we comment on subjects that are boring to begin with and don't need our help ^_~
To sum it up, I think these kinds of sites have, if not revolutionized, at least changed to a large degree the social structure within high schools and colleges where internet access is a common occurance. Some people may get "tired" of hopping sites, but I know that lots of people look forward to getting online every day to see what kinds of messages people have left them, pictures others have posted, and potential friends (and _friends_) may be waiting for them.

Re:Idiot
But I know a number of professional artists, from bands that are fairly well-known and have done national and international tours, and they make middle-class salaries.
True, I've talked to some of the guys from Sloan (a pretty decent sized, long running band here in Candada) a couple of times, and on thing I asked was "So, what's it like being a rocktar?". The reply: "It's a job. The best job in the world, but it's a job.". Just because you're famous, that doesn't make you rich, but some people manage to make a living at it. -
Re:Idiot
I'd rather pirate the track and give the artist the buck directly. If only there were a way to do that...
Some artists setup paypal donations on their homepages and put almost all of their music up for download, but like most musicians playing on the street, most just walk on by with bowed heads and a shrug...much less buy the albums.
I like the attitude, and I wish more would have it, but it seems like more of a utopian desire than than reality. For the number of people out there saying 'i wish i could support the artists directly', well, we're out there and there are ways to do it (and I'm sure it's not just me, I'm just the easiest example from my perspective).
Sorry for the Slashvertisement, but I had to get my point across. -

Re:Fixed?
Anyone brave enough to check this out? Hopefully they did fix this. If someone figured out how to post this code to a certain popular social networking site it could have disastrous fallout.

Re:Okay...
From a link in the article:
"The attacker had registered a MySpace account named login_home_index_html, meaning that the MySpace page hosting the fake login, looked like a legitimate place where users would sign on to the service."
So it was just a user page but it DID have myspace.com in the URL. The URL was:
http://www.myspace.com/login_home_index_html -
